Our Expert Score

93/100

GWENT: Rogue Mage is a phenomenal expansion of the Witcher universe that successfully marries the deep strategy of GWENT with the addictive loop of a roguelike deckbuilder. Playing as the ambitious mage Alzur is a treat for lore fans, as it predates the witchers we know and love. The single-player focus is a breath of fresh air, allowing you to experiment with wildly powerful card synergies that wouldn't be possible in a balanced competitive meta.

The game is notoriously tough, but that makes every successful run feel like a genuine accomplishment. The map navigation adds a layer of risk management—do you visit a place of power to upgrade a card, or take a risky elite fight for a better treasure? The production value is top-tier, with incredible card art and voice acting that fans have come to expect from CD PROJEKT RED. It’s a deep, rewarding, and highly polished experience that is a must-play for card game enthusiasts.

Quality, Matches a Bit Long.

Like the game. Think it’s mostly great. Do feel like the matches take a while, especially when you’re meant to traverse a whole map. I think some setting to hasten the games for people who want a shorter casual experience would be nice. Cut the deck size maybe? I’d like more matches of shorter length if I turn the game on for a brief moment. I don’t like that there’s an energy bar with a timer in a $10 game. That exists in free games as a cash grab. I paid, so don’t make me wait an hour or more to continue if I run out of energy. I’ll have to discourage other people purchasing until it’s changed.

Just not worth 10 bucks

Not sure what CD Projekt Red was going for with this game. I’ve been pro rank in Gwent a couple times and have plenty of experience with the game. Rogue mage attempts to make Gwent a single player experience and it’s just not that fun. Many complaints and some good things too so I’ll start with the good and then the bad. Good 1. The game can be played offline making it a good time when internet can’t be reached 2. Gwent is a great game and you should try it if you haven’t 3. The game is challenging, so if you’re into that, you’ll enjoy the challenge. Bad 1. They’ve changed all the cards in this game. They’ve changed some of the mechanics too… why..? No great reason. But it makes the game confusing for Gwent players. 2. The graphics aren’t great, the writing is meh and there’s no great story to follow. 3. My biggest complaint is that this game costs 10 dollars… it’s a cash in. If it was free with some dlc… okay fine. But 10 bucks for this game is somehow a rip off. And 10 bucks isn’t much. If you want to play Gwent, go buy it for free and play Gwent and buy all the dlc you want. This game is boring and tedious and isn’t worth 10 bucks. Isn’t worth 5 honestly. 4. To me there’s nothing more frustrating than building up a cool deck, having everything right, beating a level and then having to start all over with a new deck. Why not let us keep our decks? Every “run” is the same, so many of the enemies are repeated. This game could have been great but it’s just not. For 10 bucks you’d have more fun with a wishing well.

Worth a try

First of all, any review complaining about recharging energy in a game you already paid for is wrong! The energy is used for each run and then completely refills when you start your next run even if you do them back to back. The game is a rogue-lite type deck builder game. The game itself is challenging but not impossible and really makes it fun as you have to seriously contemplate your next move. Any fan of Gwent will instantly fall in love and even if you just like the Witcher series I think you’ll enjoy it too. Story is cool as well as it’s about the creation of the Witchers. Fits screen well and no bugs I have run into. Money well spent for the fun I’ve had so far!

Great Single Player Gwent
Sat Jul 09 2022 AlexMisak

Happy to get a single player Gwent game vs. the original PVP version. Tons of fun and the different decks provide a ton of variety and complexity. No “freemium” energy or timers here. Play as much as you want. Only recommendation, and reason for 4 stars, is I wish there was a way to sync progress between multiple devices, specifically phone and iPad. Also based on limited testing on iPad Pro performance needs to be improved a bit.

Great except for last card
Sat Oct 29 2022 GTjamone

I love this game except for one glaring aspect. The enemy is always the last to play a card (that’s not the issue) and the game moves on and declares defeat or victory without giving you a chance to find out how you won or lost (more importantly lost). There’s no way to go back and see the last enemy turn. For instance, on my last round, I ended my turn 32 points up on the enemy. On enemy’s last turn, lots of stuff happened very quickly and suddenly it shows my defeat by one point. I think this is a major oversight and very frustrating. It’s very annoying to lose on the last turn, but infuriating to not even know how or why!

Gwent Singleplayer

I’ve been waiting for another single player experience after Gwent for so long after Thronebreaker. I love the rogue like aspects for this game but just wish they added the three rounds back in for boss fights or something as well as more deck building options. I really hope they continue on with the single player Gwent games. (Another review mentions energy or P2W aspects, there’s none of that here.)

Initial 8 Hour Review
Fri Jul 08 2022 WinJWat

Overall, if you enjoyed Gwent - it’s a fun game. There’s some randomness to it where you’ll have a deck that simply gets hard countered by opponents on a good run, which can be frustrating, but overall enjoying my time so far. 8 hours has gotten me to stage 2 of the story (seems like there may be 6 stages in total?) and level 37 or so out of 100. Most decks unlocked, still getting “key cards” and all that jazz.

Game highly unstable iphone8p
Wed Jul 13 2022 kenthutkool

Love the game despite the issues with the core gameplay loop. However the game crashes randomly on the iPhone 8p. It’s really annoying to lose progress with a random crash. This problem is also in regular Gwent. I would imagine if I had the newest iPhone this would not be a issue. So older iPhone users beware. Wish there was a graphics toggle or something. It’s not like the graphics are that intense so I don’t get why it would cause the app to crash.
