-Optimized overheating issues for some selected models.
Afterimage Mobile is one of the most impressive ports I've seen on the platform. This is a massive, sprawling Metroidvania that has been successfully shrunk down without losing its soul. The hand-drawn art is jaw-droppingly beautiful, with every region—from the Sunken City to the Whispering Forest—feeling distinct and alive. On a high-resolution mobile screen, the colors absolutely pop.
The combat is precise, which is essential for a game that demands high-level platforming and boss pattern recognition. While touch controls are surprisingly responsive, playing with a controller really lets the game shine. The sheer amount of content here is staggering; with over 200 pieces of equipment and a massive world map to explore, it feels like a 'proper' console experience in the palm of your hand. If you have the storage space, this is an essential adventure for any action-platformer fan.
Massive non-linear world with 15+ areas
Stunning hand-drawn 2D visuals
Deep RPG progression with 200+ gear pieces
Supports external game controllers
Don't try to kill everything immediately. Some areas are gated by 'Afterimages' (movement abilities). If an enemy kills you in one hit, mark it on your map and come back once you've unlocked the double jump or dash.
You can equip two weapons at once. Pairing a fast-hitting 'Blade' with a long-range 'Scythe' allows you to handle both mob crowds and fast-moving bosses effectively.
The initial download is small, but the full game requires approximately 3GB of space for high-quality assets.
The Good: Beautiful graphics. Combat feels good. There’s variety in weapons and enemies. Cloud saves work across devices, and you can play the iPad version on Mac. It’s a premium game so no in app purchases or ads or any other nonsense, and you don’t need an internet connection. The Bad: It’s very unoptimized. It will heat up your phone and drain battery pretty quickly, no matter your settings even though it’s a 2D game. This isn’t a game you want to play when you’re not near a charger. As a console port, you really need a game controller to have the best experience. The onscreen controls are surprisingly usable, but only after customizing and testing a few different layouts to make the controls fit my hands better. There’s also some confusing item descriptions and odd menus. Also somehow my main save got out of sync and won’t upload so now I can only really play on one device without losing huge progress.
Completed the game. Touch controls work surprisingly well, especially when there’s so many. It helps that the game unlocks each button progressively. Only gripe is that attempts to scroll the text frequently interact with iOS app switching, and circumventing that results in accidental dialog skips.
Let me start by saying this is an amazing game. However, on my iPhone 14 Pro Max even after the update it gets real hot in like 30 mins or less even on the lowest setting. I find myself not wanting to play for long periods in fear of my battery deteriorating. I hope there can be even more optimization in the future. Until then I can’t give it higher then a 3 because I can’t comfortably play feeling the heat from my phone.
The game is pretty. That’s about all I can say that is good. I found it to be unplayable. Wish I could get a refund.
This is insane. I spend $6 on a game and $1,500 on a phone… the game CRUSHES the heat on my phone. You need to optimize this game, it’s trash.
