- Small maintenance changes.
I loved the entire Myst series when I was a kid and my dad encouraged me to play, too. I was really excited to see this was playable on my iPhone and I’ve been immersed in it for a few days now. I’m trying not to cheat so I can figure out the puzzles on my own. The most frustrating part isn’t in the game play, but in the design of it for mobile application. The menu bar on the bottom sits right on top of the bar on the iPhone that allows you to switch apps. It’s a pain in the rear to pull up the menu to save bookmarks. And then again to try closing the menu, it pulls down my iPhone menu. Last thing is I distinctly remember being able to carry multiple pages on the PC version so you didn’t have to go back to the Age to get the second page, but the mobile app only allows you to carry one at a time. Other than that, I’m really having fun with the game, but would heartily welcome an update to the UI.
First - I don't understand why any negative reviews exist. This is an amazing update to an amazing game. I bought Myst on the day it was first released in 1993, and immersed myself in the world for the next couple weeks. There were no hint guides, I had to figure everything out with a buddy who also got the game. The puzzles were fun and challenging - all that is here! But now it's not point and click, it's pure FLUID movement through these beautifully-crafted ages. Ever wonder what's at the back end of the "potato ship" (as my young son called the rail vehicle in Selenitic)? You can go have a look. It's nice to be able to do that in a world many of us were immersed in so long ago. There are a couple things I hope get updated... first, there are a couple places in the game that are extremely dark. It could bring your game to a complete standstill with the touch screen; the Mac version let you click your way out, but the touch screen gives no indication where you can go. Potentially a big problem. Second: it is awkward and difficult to have your finger blocking the screen while you play. This is not the best way to play IMO, a virtual joypad (user-defined) would be much better. I never use controls like this when I have another option, I hope Cyan fixes this in an update in case I want to play it again in the future. But overall I still give it five stars. One of my fave games of all time...
I played Myst when it released in 1993 and it was a game my parents and I loved and hated cause it was so frustrating on the puzzles but very well done of a challenge! When they made the guide later on after countless times trying the puzzles together, It was easier for us all to enjoy it even more, immersed in to the world of Myst and finish it. Years later after grown up and understand the puzzles more thoroughly, I played Myst again, Riven when released and the other Mysts later on that came after and enjoyed them all. Now present day, 31 years old and seen that Myst and Riven has came to the Apple community, I immediately purchased realMyst and Riven and dwelled right back in the nostalgia world! This version is a updated graphics and real swipe and turn based that was not in the original and I loved it! Thanks Cyan for continuing on your amazing Myst series to present day mobile and tablet devices!
This is still the same old great Myst, it’s always intriguing. I think it could use a graphical update though m, it’s rough. The areas feel too condensed sometimes and you get stuck on parts of the environment. I hope one of these versions of the game will expand the environments someday and give us more stuff to interact with to enjoy the worlds. It’s be cool to just mess around in the worlds after you’ve competed the game with something to do besides walk around. Also the menu can be kind of hard to access since the newer iphones already have a swipe up to close. The white line for the “tabs” or “swipe up” never disappears so that’s annoying as well. Hopefully Myst 2021 will be out on PS5!
I bought the original Myst for the Mac back when it was first released. At the time the imagery was amazing with a great sound track and a cleaver use of Sound, Video, and puzzles. I have to admit I was a fan of the whole story line and bought the first two books. Last week I downloaded an old Macintosh emulator and the original Myst. 256 color 640x480 images with tiny little videos was very unimpressive. I bought this version for my iPad 4 and have to say It is true to the original and brings a nice immersive feel to the world of Myst with great quality. For those who are into modern video this may seem a bit dated, but it is great as far as I am concerned. I loved the addition of the Rime Age. I remembered a number of the puzzles and others felt like learning a new. I am looking forward to grabbing Riven for iPad too.
I was grinning the first few hours playing this game as I reminisced about the classic I struggled to beat as a kid. But at some point I got so sick to my stomach I thought I was literally coming down with COVID. The next day I felt better and tried playing again, but felt sick after maybe 20 minutes this time. After reading other reviews, I’m pretty sure it’s this game. I don’t know if it’s the jerky motion every time you click slightly off-center to move forward or the fact that looking around moves so fast it’s like spinning, but I really, really wish they would either fix this or introduce an settings option to revert to the point-and-click + image stills aesthetic of the original (which was really cool anyways). I’d be happy to update my rating if they do so, but seeing that some reviews calling out this problem are 8+ years old, I’m sadly skeptical that anything will be fixed.
Played the pc game back in the day, own the prequel (book), and have also played Riven. Attempted to play via the app and seems like there are always glitches that prevent the game from being finished. Currently, can’t get out of the water in the tower at shipwreck island (you’re not supposed to be able to get in the water) because the floating chest blocks the steps. Restarting device doesn’t resolve the glitch. So play ends up being total waste of time. [Gave two stars instead of one since the developer subsequently came out with Myst Legacy which I also purchased thinking it would be an improvement over this one but instead it just has superbly awful (way worse) graphics and gameplay (control) changes from this version that rendered what historically was an engrossing game completely unenjoyable/boring.]
After starting with the free portion of Myst mobile, I looked at the reviews of Myst mobile and realMyst and followed a reviewer's advice that the additional cost for the realMyst version was worth the improvement. Wow yes. For the interface alone, plus the graphics. Awesome work, developers. At the moment, there's a bug in audio in the gear age when my walking is between the outside puzzle and the entry door--it goes silent until I reach either end. At the moment, the visual transition is bumpy in these places there are slidey doors: the gear age, and the ship age. Specifically, the animation is smooth as I am being taken into the next chamber, then there is an abrupt jump or change in height.
