Our Expert Score

86/100

Tacticus is arguably the best implementation of the Warhammer 40k universe on mobile to date. It captures the grimdark atmosphere perfectly but presents it through a highly accessible hexagonal tactical grid. The game is all about positioning; utilizing high ground and environmental cover is just as important as the stats of your units. Each faction—from the Ultramarines to the Necrons—feels unique, with abilities that mirror their tabletop counterparts.

The campaign missions are bite-sized, which is perfect for mobile play, but the 'Guild Raids' and 'Arena' modes provide the long-term strategic depth that 40k fans crave. The character models are surprisingly detailed for a mobile title, and seeing a Chainsword rev up to execute an Orc is always satisfying. It’s a 'gacha' game at its core, but the tactical gameplay is strong enough that it feels more like a strategy game first and a collector second.

Great Game, pretty grindy

I really like this game, and have managed to accrue a significant number of the characters up to silver and gold rank, which takes a while if you insist on playing it free to play (as I do). But this game lets you do that casually; I’ll log on for a few minutes, auto play (raid) for items to upgrade characters, and then revisit when my energy has replenished. If I want to work on campaigns I’ll spend some time actually playing the game. I’ve managed to complete the Orkz, Ultramarines, Chaos, Eldari, and Black Templars campaigns, all without spending any money. Having a good, active guild helps, as winning raids gives you guild currency to buy more character shards and upgrade characters. It’s fun and I’m not bored yet, and new factions come out at a good pace. Some negatives are that the Necron faction isn’t that useful in the long term so it feels like a waste to build them up for their campaign. And as many people say, requisitions rarely met you anything of value. I got lucky the first few I did but I can’t say the last time I got a worthwhile new character from one, or even a large amount of shards for a decent character I already had. Having said that I still recommend the game wholeheartedly. But all of the pay to play stuff is overpriced, do not waste your money, and if you don’t have the willpower to ignore it, don’t play this game.

Surprisingly good

The game’s got a lot of great points. The artwork and animation stand out and the gameplay itself is engaging (there are enough things to track that you stay entertained but few enough that you don’t get confused, a bad decision can make or break the game, and the hero abilities feel fun, responsive, and impactful). The progression and character unlock systems are rewarding, too. My complaints are that the game is very grinding driven. A lot of the experience is locked behind time gates or pay walls, and I’m not convinced that a series of missions that will provide maybe 20-30 minutes of dedicated gameplay are worth an hour or two’s pay - particularly not since there aren’t a lot of voluntary ad options with which to bypass obstacles. You’re looking at paying $30 for heroes that use the same resources as everybody else (so once you spend the money you don’t get to play the game more, just differently) followed by multi-hour waits to go through surges of gameplay that last, at most, five to ten minutes. It can be extremely frustrating, which makes me hesitant to spend money, which is sad because a lot of the heroes look like fun! The dollar to entertainment ratio just isn’t weighty enough. Great way to burn through a few hours before you start hitting plateaus and getting frustrated. There are also a few bugs and oversights here and there but they’re not major. The main issue is how aggressively the devs decided to enforce a glacial rate of play.

Deep gameplay, great characters, and regular updates. I have been playing since maybe September of last year and can undoubtedly say that it’s definitely in a league of its own. I have never felt like I needed to pay to get ahead of everyone, which is very refreshing. Of course, like with any f2p game, you can pay to get a character and get a head start to progression, but one character will only get you so far. As far as in app purchases, some of the deals they offer are quite good and reasonably priced for what they offer… and others are forgettable. My gameplay is never hindered by ads and the only ads in game are to get a free, once daily, bonus of 50 energy, refresh items shop inventory, and a small amount of gold, the “non-premium” currency. Energy is used to complete missions and it recharges over time like other games. There are genuinely some times that I’m upset because I have run out of energy and have to stop playing. There are constant gift codes given out, I am surprised by how much is actually given out. If you like Warhammer 40K, this game is worth having a look. You don’t have to have any knowledge of the 40K universe to play or understand this game and there are several campaigns that actually have decent stories for a f2p game.

Not the Worst Out There
Fri Apr 05 2024 Living is overrated

But definitely not the best. Warhammer 40K: Tacticus has absolutely nerfed the drop rates for shards, making it more and more difficult to get characters. Let’s say that you want Celestine, the Living Saint. She costs 500 shards to unlock. You can raid the battle ten times a day to get shards, but you’ll be lucky, and darn lucky at that, to get more than two shards to drop out of those ten attempts, and it will take you months of doing that every day to unlock the character. But of course they conveniently started selling packs of extra shards and all that would ‘help’ you unlock the character a bit faster, which they started selling at the same time they seriously nerfed the drop rates for the shards. Conveniently, I say again. It’s also an absolute nightmare to get orbs, which are needed to promote many of the characters after the lowest ranks. I have multiple characters that I have 150 or more of the 50 shards needed to promote the character, but only 6/10 orbs. So how do you get orbs, orbs that you must have or you can never promote the character? You open your wallet and give them your debit card number of course! It’s either pay up or spend a year grinding to hopefully get enough orbs (and forge badges to forge orbs) to promote the character. This game isn’t quite as scummy as ‘Raid: Shadow Scam Legends’ but it’s not far from it. My advice is that you don’t even bother installing the game in the first place, not at least until this company rolls back the scum they’ve stuck into the game.

Massive pay wall, event, and pay to win PVP
Mon Nov 21 2022 Gamingprinny

This game is fun don’t get me wrong but seriously it almost like everything and i mean EVERYTHING is locked behind a 20 to 30$ pay wall it’s so hard to be free to play because you know you’re never going to achieve what the game demands you to have, for example the chaos campaign (and all the campaigns) can only be completed if you pay real money to upgrade your units when if you’re free to play you have to grind nonstop and sadly end up quitting the campaign at level 43 (67 if your on the first campaign) because everything one shots you from a imperial soldier that’s supposed to be weaker then you to the the coms unit that keeps calling for backup and sadly the PVP is also affected by the pay to win where players in 4 million to 10 million power are fighting people who are in the 4 to 2k’s (I’m not making it up that’s literally almost all the players I’ve had to fight and I’m on veteran league) and even the events have been affected by Pay to wins! Where it’s impossible to be a “good player” when you’re always and forever be dead last because you’re a free to play it hard to love this game when you feel like the game is against you because you refuse to spend money I hope the developers see this because I think this is going to be the most honest review they are going to get and I hope they can make this game less about money and more about the players having fun

Not bad but a serious grin....edit...don't play it..it's a scam.

Huge 40k fan. And I do actually enjoy they game. You can play a few hours but then you hit a grind wall for character upgrades that really takes it out of you. The game spams micro transaction packs at you and it's very tempting because of how hard those grind walls are. I love the events for characters unlock until you get to about the 3rd step in the quest were the difficulty spikes and the task you need to complete becomes unrealistic to complete in the few days the event is activated all in an attempt to get you to buy there micro transaction pack to "speed" up the process. The arena and team events are very well done but almost a joke for those who go in without top rated characters. Especially those boss battles. Overall the game has potential and while I understand the need for money for a free to play game. A casual no pay player like myself can find themselves grinding for literally days or weeks to maybe get a chance at upgrading one character. *edit* After another couple of days of playing I think I'm done with this game. I'm stuck on a level and I have no way of passing it unless I grind for the next several weeks with MAYBE a chance getting my characters strong enough. This is a well dressed gottcha game sadly once again dressed up in the amazing 40k universe. DONT play it

Time gating, rng, and too many different resources

The game starts out fun, you get introduced to the mechanics which I love, the the characters abilities, but the fact that all the early game rewards are dictated seems very aggressive at how much control they want to have over your progression, the fact that the “cooler” characters are locked behind luck and a long grind takes away from the potential of a shorter grind with cool builds you can do instead of stat checking battles, it’s not a very intuitive game and instead is boiled down to “do this upgrade that and only fight when you’re more powerful”. The goal might be another mindless mobile game that’s made to attract whales that already love warhammer 40k. and if that’s your goal, cudose to you, you managed to make 40k a little less likable, and more about a money grab on a growing industry. Other than that, there’s no point to how many resources there are to upgrade characters when it’s all time gated, there’s not interesting builds of characters you can use so the game play is pretty straightforward, the screen is always full of self advertising which takes away from the cool background and I’m always interrupted by something flashing on my screen which I always click away from, but it’s a fun way to blow time, and to see characters you love reading about move and use their weapons, wouldn’t recommended to anyone I know but encourage those already playing to not take it seriously and don’t spend money on something that’s not going to reward you in the long run

DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME!!!
Tue Sep 16 2025 Nicknamebecauseihavetoo

This game is extremely predatory and should be removed due to false advertising. If you HAVE to spend money on a game guess what??? IT’S NOT FREE!!! Idk how these game devs aren’t getting thrown in jail for breaking the lae because they are lol. I know someone personally that is a lawyer and he’s telling me that these f2p games are on a clock. All i’m gonna say is these game devs better make their money quick because it won’t be long before they are removed. The feds ARE lookig into these games and have a massive case against them. I hope they made their money because they’re gonna never need it REAL soon :). I also noticed that apple doesn’t put any negative reviews where you can see them from the app store. Please do some research for any f2p games you think you want to play. This isn’t gaming, this is gambling. If you want to gamble that’s fine but kids SHOULD NOT have the ability to be able to gamble. ALL of these “f2p” games are just gambling. If you don’t think the government isn’t looking into these horrible game devs you are very very mistaken. There is about to be a massive take down for alot of these predatory “F2P” games. All i’m gonna say is i know for a fact that these games aren’t gonna be around for long in the states and there are HUNDREDS of people that are soon going to be arrested for false advertisement, illegal gambling, and much more. They are looking at using the RICO act to be able to take these “businesses” down. It’s going to be glorious :)
