Minor issues fixed.
SaGa Frontier Remastered is a masterclass in how to bring a cult classic into the modern era without losing the eccentric soul that made it famous. For the uninitiated, the SaGa series has always been the rebellious sibling of Final Fantasy, ditching linear storytelling for the 'Free Scenario System.' This remaster doesn't just sharpen the pixels; it fundamentally completes the game by finally adding Fuse as a playable eighth protagonist, integrating content that was left on the cutting room floor back in 1997.
The gameplay remains beautifully obtuse. Characters don't level up in the traditional sense; they gain stats based on actions in battle and 'glimmer' new skills mid-fight when the pressure is on. It’s a system that rewards experimentation and risk-taking. On mobile, the UI has been surprisingly well-adapted, with snappy menus and a high-speed mode that makes the inevitable grinding a breeze. Whether you're exploring the high-tech city of Manhattan or the magic-drenched realm of Magic Kingdom, the vibrant art pop and the Kenji Ito soundtrack still slap as hard as they did decades ago. It's a non-linear fever dream that finally feels finished.
Eight unique protagonists including Fuse
Stunning high-definition 2D-style graphics
Non-linear Free Scenario storytelling
Double-speed and quality-of-life improvements
To learn new abilities, use basic attacks or weapon-specific skills against strong enemies. The lightbulb icon above a character's head indicates they've 'glimmered' a new move that will be added to their permanent repertoire.
Unlike other RPGs, you are free to explore most of the world immediately. Talk to NPCs in various regions like Scrap or Koorong to trigger sub-quests that help strengthen your party before tackling your hero's main quest.
No, SaGa Frontier is a standalone experience and perfect for newcomers to the series.
I’ve been waiting for a rerelease of this game for so long. Every time ffvii came out on a new platform I said where’s Saga Frontier. Works well on mobile no aiming like GTA even ff tactics was hard to rotate the screen on mobile but this one never had any of that. The updated menus/ UI aren’t perfect but they’re fine. One issue is when healing characters and your mage is in the last slot it can be hard to select who you want to heal and if misclicked could start the round. May be more of an issue with a large monster in your group standing in the way and I’ve not found a way to click around them. Can be an issue selecting enemies too but not horrible. The cool thing about this game was the different character types humans, monsters, mechs and mystics. Each have their own ways to upgrade and operate. I had a 50 page printout of monster abilities. They could become almost any monster in the game. You could appreciate mystics and mechs in the same way. Stop by a certain bar on a certain planet to bulk up your roster quick. Go to a certain tomb for some easy to get mid level gear and we’re back in business.
I don’t normally write reviews, but this has been one of my favorite games since I was a kid and owned it on PlayStation 1. The remaster makes the graphics look better, there are bonuses to completing each character story line with new game +, AND they added fuses story (which I’d recommend saving for last). If you liked the original or are a fan of the series and have never played this game - it’s worth every penny… I hope they continue to remake the classics like this. How about vagrant story next? Or radiata stories? :)
Sure, a port lacks a little of the playability of playing it not on a phone; but this version is complete. It doesn’t have the shortcomings I’ve seen in previous Square Enix ports, the remaster and added content are huge improvements to the original game, and it’s overall worth more than the price. Definitely worth buying for nostalgia or first time players.
Yeah I could have just downloaded and played on emulator cause honestly I prefer older graphic look but screw it I bought and hopefully I beat it. This game is worth i suppose for my phone on to go grinding levels and not just a dumb Gacha game grind!!!
Played this as a kid and never could finish the game, now it shows up available on my phone to mock me again... Haha not this time. This time we play for everything.... one last time!... Also buy the game it’s good.
One of my all time favorite games has come back to life. Controller support works great and so does the game! Port done right!
Love the game however, the sound doesn’t work for my iPhone. Boo
