NFL Retro Bowl '27 has everything you need for the new season, including:
- A new way to play! Gauntlet Mode challenges you to rack up a 16-game win streak with limited players, powerful perks, and competitive leaderboards.
- New rosters! The rookies have arrived and the rosters have been refreshed, with more updates in the weeks to come with roster cutdown and as the teams get ready for the 2026 NFL Kickoff.
- New uniforms! Refreshed to match the real teams' latest designs
- New options! Expand your coaching tactics with the fan-favorite 12-man roster option, or change the way the opposition teams choose their key players. Do you want to face a league stacked with top-rated defenders, or a league full of fresh-face rookies? The choice is yours!
- New leaderboards! Starting alongside the 2026 NFL Kickoff, the NFL Retro Bowl Championship Leaderboard will return, with a new chance to rally your fellow fans and use your skills on the field to push your favorite team to the top of the community leaderboard.
NFL Retro Bowl '26 perfects the formula of bite-sized gridiron action, finally marrying the phenomenally addictive gameplay of the original with the official NFL license. The mechanics are deceptively simple: dragging to aim a pass feels incredibly natural on a touch screen, yet mastering the timing of receiver routes and bullet passes provides a high skill ceiling. The joy of building a team from a one-star laughingstock to a five-star dynasty through the draft and free agency is just as compelling as the actual on-field gameplay.
The aesthetic is charmingly nostalgic, recalling the glory days of Tecmo Bowl, but underneath the pixel art lies a surprisingly robust simulation. Player morale, injuries, and weather conditions all dynamically affect your season. While some players might still lament the inability to manually play defense, the streamlined focus on offense keeps matches brisk and perfect for mobile play. This is easily one of the best sports games available on the platform.
Official NFL teams and rosters
Retro 8-bit graphics
Deep roster management
Intuitive touch-based passing
To pass, drag backward on the screen to aim your trajectory, then release to throw. To run, tap the running back before the snap, or swipe up and down during a play to dodge defenders.
The game loop cycles between playing offensive drives during games and managing your team's facilities, coaching staff, and roster in the front office to build a dynasty.
No, defense is simulated based on the star rating of your defensive players and your defensive coordinator.
First, I will start by saying that the game of retro bowl has to be one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. But, I do have a few questions and suggestions. Firstly, I never understood why there may never be a playable defense on the game. To me, that would change the way many people look at retro bowl. I know it would be difficult for the developers to design that but it would definitely be worth a shot. I would actually prefer us being able to play with the defense as well rather than playing against real people online, that’s just my opinion. Another question I have is why are there only a max of 10-man rosters in this specific game, but in og retro bowl and RBC, you can get up to a 12-man roster. Now, I have a few suggestions. I think it would be nice if you guys added away fans in the stands just to be a little more realistic. I know this one is not that important but I just think that would be a nice little touch. Another suggestion I have is that you guys add preseasons to the game so we could use a practice squad of players. Also, I know this one is pretty lame too 😂 but it’s something I see that will add that more of a NFL type of game.
I have had the game since release and have thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I feel that the game sometimes has an immersive atmosphere where you really feel like a real head coach. Other times it just feels like normal Retro Bowl but with real players. The are a lot of things that could be added to make the game better. For an example when your playing through a season and your team has a prime time game the field should darken up a little maybe you can see a little of the dark sky. Also when looking at a player card they have such immense detail, but the second the game starts everyone looks the same. It is also annoying that when you trade for a player they immediately lose their number. I also think with trading it should some what resemble Madden that you can make more then one draft pick trades or one player trades. Maybe for trading you get a screen where you can trade for 3 draft picks or players and you can give 3 draft picks or players. It would be cool if you could check player stats during a game. There is already the screen with your team you should be able to click on one of your players to see their stats. Lastly rosters can hold 12 players max. Real NFL rosters have a practice squad with backups. It would be great if you could have 2-4 backups on your practice squad in case a starter gets hurt. Also with the practice squad backups it would be cool to sub a starter out for a drive with a backups then put him in the next drive.
I think you should think about my ideas or some things you can change, Just to make it a little real maybe like signature celebration’s like the griddy, 1st down celebration’s like Ceedee Lambs nose wipe, and more animation’s, Like one handed catchs, Juke moves spin moves, and just a thought Show-boating before getting to the endzone and maybe accessories in-game and also maybe allowing us to do more like career mode but with a storyline, And being able to make a draft class for the the season after, And also when I got into the game some of the players weren’t on there team like Jamyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, And Justin Jefferson and LOTS more. And also Like a mock draft where we can look at the players in the next draft, and at the end of the season we see their Combine and their Pros and Cons, and also we can simulate more like simulate to the playoffs, or the draft, or the next 5 weeks ETC. And also more Ratings like agilty jumping, Madden type stuff. And also being able to play defense like controlling a player and picking off the ball, or sacking the quaterback, And why is Jayden Daniels Potential so low, He’s supposedly probably gonna be rookie of the year, and also let us Edit their overall. Overall this game is decent just wish their was more celebration’s and showboating, and animations. Please think about this New star, I think these are some great ideas, to make it more funner instead of the same thing.
I really enjoyed this game as it brings the NFL to the retro bowl universe! There is a lot of features this game brings that I really enjoy like that you can make your own team depending on the budget, You can make trades for players, and view other teams rosters. As this is a small list of the features in the game. But some features I don’t like is some of the team uniforms is not perfect… but that’s not really that big of a deal breaker what’s more of a bigger deal breaker is that they removed so many things from this that the original retro bowl has. They removed the extreme game mode and that’s really the only really game mode I struggle with and the only one that gives me a challenge. And without a challenge I think I will surely lose interest in the game after a while. Something else I don’t think is great is the ratings. They have Patrick Mahomes at a 4 1/2 stars and they have Tua’s potential at a 5 star making Tua better than Mahomes. I understand the reason why is because of the physical stats but I think they should add more to define their ratings because it just seems completely (well at least most players) that their ratings is just wrong. In a better turn I really like their GUI it’s like the old retro bowl and retro bowl college but with nfl features. I think if they work and take basic feedback as I’m not including a full review as I only played for about 40 mins and played through almost a full season I like it a lot but again the is just sim issues I think they can work on to really make it a 5 star game!
I love this game first of all, the gameplay is great, depending on the difficulty settings the gameplay can be challenging, although extreme is nearly impossible to win due to the opponent scoring everytime they go on offense & throwing interceptions seem to happen everytime because the opponent team is as a whole is VERY FAST!! The NEED for an update is the coaching credits. Every move you look to do involves having a need of plenty coaching credits. It is VERY I balanced. You dont win much every game. The most I’ve seen is 3 per game & that is a team after winning a Superbowl. How many seasons do I have to play to get to 100 credits in order to increase the teams payroll? And that is keeping up with the players morale, conditioning, extending the contract, the teams facilities, the stadium, looking for better coaches, or better yet trying to sign free agents, which cost credits that you will most likely not have. This part of the game is VERY UNREALISTIC!! And it take away from the coaching aspect, which for adults is a great part of the game. This element of the game gives this game a Fanasty Football feel and the concept is really important for game balance & team structure depending on the situation. For example dealing with injuries, expiring contracts. Please look into this as soon as possible. It is lacking realism & needs to be addressed.
You’re capped out on money on how much your squad can be worth. Either your defense is really good, or offense. It’s hard to get enough coins to upgrade the capped amount and after every game you have to decide wether to decline your teams morale or lose the coin for that game. If you decided to decline the morale of the players they don’t play as good and at the end of their contract they won’t stay. Also it’s nearly impossible to improve their morale unless, of course you get more coins. It’s so bad that you can’t even start with the teams real full squad. The levels of difficulty of the teams are really terrible too. Extreme and hard levels will be nearly impossible to win, with a lot of interceptions and fumbles. There’s no way to avoid a fumble and they happen multiple times per game. Normal easy and dynamic are way too easy it’s not even fun playing. A better situation would be if the difficulty level would depend on the team playing against. On to the next situation, coaches are so expensive to keep, they require coins after every season and again will put you behind on the salary cap to buy players. Conclusion This game has a lot of potential to be great but the amount of icks on this app makes it impossible to have fun. If someone on your roster levels up you might have to cut them bc of the salary cap. So it’s not even fun to build a good roster bc you will most likely have to get rid of some players. Same thing with coaches, in order to keep them they are expensive.
This is just the same game just with nfl teams which they already did. I also want to state that it’s kinda bad that they got rid of extreme mode because it was a good game because it felt more harder because it “Extreme” next to the difficulty and if you know the strats like me you would win games on extreme pretty easily. It actually feels better and faster than OG RB and College RB on hard mode, I would still just like to have that you know extra hard to that you know? It’s a good game don’t get me wrong but, they could improve on more aspects on the game. Better presentation, actual trading, that’s realistic would be nice. Also, I know you got the NFL license, but it makes no sense for the game to be called “Retro Bowl” but you win the Super Bowl instead. I think that changes not the whole meaning because it’s still retro, but the fact that you can’t even win the literal name of the game. I know a lot of people are mad because you have to have Apple Arcade to get the game, I already have Apple Arcade so this isn’t a problem, but there was really no reason to make it exclusive to Apple Arcade. Just admit they paid you some cash so you they could promote Apple Arcade. But Still this game is amazing, and I love you New Star Games.
The game is pretty fun, but there are things that should’ve been fixed awhile ago, but they’re still a problem. Now there’s new issues. First: QB Speed isn’t the same as any other position. Forcing QBs to be slower makes it impossible for Lamar Jackson to be as dynamic as he is. He’s literally nurfed since a max speed for a QB is slower than a max speed at any other position. Also, Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson aren’t in the preselected rosters? How is it that one of our biggest playmakers isn’t preselected for game one? Another issue is the fact that the new upper and lower customization options ARE NOT available for saves in progress. It finest make sense that you can’t add that feature into saves in progress. I shouldn’t have to start over from scratch to get this feature. Other features like rosters make sense, but the jersey selection should be available for all saves. Now just some personal improvement ideas: Yearly awards should give users a choice of upgrading a players max potential, or coach credits. Ex: my 3 star(max 3.5 star) QB wins MVP. I should be given a choice between 5-10 coach credits or an increase of his max overall from 3.5 stars to 4 stars. Talent spotter shouldn’t be the only way a player can get better in their career.
