Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a breathtakingly unique take on the JRPG genre, presented entirely through the medium of tabletop cards. From the characters and enemies to the terrain itself, everything is a card. This isn't just a gimmick; it creates a cozy, focused atmosphere that feels like sitting down for a session with a master Game Master.
The writing, spearheaded by Yoko Taro, is sharp, humorous, and occasionally melancholic. The combat is traditional turn-based fare but enhanced by the tactile feel of flipping cards and rolling dice. While it may be a bit slow for those used to action-heavy RPGs, the charm of its 'gamebook' aesthetic and the incredible soundtrack make it a standout experience on mobile.
Innovative card-based presentation
Immersive narration and tabletop feel
Strategic turn-based combat with dice mechanics
Music by acclaimed composer Keiichi Okabe
Pay close attention to elemental weaknesses during card battles. Using an element an enemy is weak to will grant you additional 'Gems' which are required to unleash your party's most powerful skills.
The entire story is narrated by a Game Master. Listen for hints in their dialogue, as they often subtly guide you toward secrets or warn you of impending danger in the next card flip.
No, it is a traditional narrative RPG that uses cards as a visual style. You do not need to buy booster packs to progress.
This game is great, especially if you enjoy rpgs (the gameplay is simple and very satisfying)and obviously Yoko Taro. You tap on screen to proceed through the games towns, caves, forests, volcano, fields. You can buy armor, weapons, and items to help you throughout the game(need gold). Only one VA which I think is fine(he’s great). Some fun unlockables such as different dice, playing tables, and player cursors. It’s a fun time when you have some down time while on your phone (best platform for this game imo). Game is maybe 12-15h long wouldn’t recommend finishing in one sitting e_e. Small multiplayer card game revolving around numbered suits.(it’s how you unlock custom boards, dice, etc.) which can be played online! That is all.
Sad to see negative reviews due to technical issues. This is a great game. I have purchased all 3 and love them greatly. Quick and easy to pick up and play. The auto save helps when you have to abruptly close out. The story is really neat and I find the battle difficulty to be well balanced. Screen doesn’t rotate, but it has to be played in landscape mode and does it really matter if the camera notch is to the left instead of right? No! It does not.
While I enjoyed most of this game, I fear that the lack of save game features using game center really keeps it from being truly great. I would love to hop between devices to play this. Saved games are stored locally so there is a chance of a recovery loss, which isn’t great. Please add cloud saves and game center support.
I am so happy that they brought this amazing series to iOS. I am happy that I can finally play it on the go!
A game. For mobile. That’s fun. And finished. No additional purchases necessary.
I never write reviews but this was well worth it. Two words. BUY IT.
Does not work on my iPhone 12. Just opens to a black screen.
All I get is a black screen on a new up to date ipad…
