To The Trenches is a turn-based strategy game that puts you in the boots of a general during the First World War. Lead your company to victory across procedurally generated battlefields using a variety of units, from infantry and snipers to primitive tanks and devastating artillery. With its unique 'toy soldier' art style and challenging AI, you'll need to master the terrain and manage your resources to break the stalemate and conquer the trenches.

Our Expert Score

89/100

To The Trenches is a visually striking and tactically deep homage to the trench warfare of the Great War, but with a unique 'toy soldier' aesthetic that makes it incredibly accessible. As a turn-based strategy game, it moves at a deliberate pace, forcing you to think several moves ahead. You aren't just commanding troops; you're managing supply lines, artillery support, and the morale of your men under the most grueling conditions.

The procedurally generated battlefields ensure that no two skirmishes feel the same. You have to use the terrain—craters, ruins, and mud—to protect your units from enemy fire. The art style is lovely, using a tilt-shift effect that makes the battlefield look like a miniature diorama come to life. It’s a game of inches and attrition, perfectly capturing the spirit of WWI while remaining a fun, engaging strategy experience that you can play on the go. It’s a must-play for fans of hex-based tactics.

Definitely worth the download!!!!

Recently downloaded this game to find something new to play & wasn’t let down after playing for awhile i upgraded pretty much everything & noticed if the game got a couple more updates & added features it would be even better & I’d definitely buy the unlimited version then if we had maybe different artillery shell options, with more damage & shrapnel options, maybe even plane bombing or naval ship shelling , different vehicles from your faction to choose from & send out whether it be land or air , & way more added officer updates. Lastly if the cost of everything upgrades wise could be tweaked as it does take quite awhile to grind & upgrade everything other than that im definitely a fan of this game & will continue to wait for updates & new features !!!!!😊

About premium squads..
Tue Sep 16 2025 AverageGunsUpPlayer

In general, the game is great. A couple complaints, like retreating, ai stupidity, such as not staying on the defensive and constantly attacking, but it’s a great game in general. Except for the premium squads. They’re cool(?) but the only one you’ll EVER need is the sharpshooter. Every other one is useless. Flamethrower has no range and will kill more of your own men than the enemies. Trench raider barely is able to be effective because they get shot before they’re able to do anything. And the sentry has the same issue as the flamethrower, and medic is situational at best. Buff the flamethrower’s range a lot, a make it a little larger than an entrenched rifleman, but have the downside of the flamethrower having less damage as it reaches. Trench raider needs a SMG according to nation, and sentry needs a lot of health. Medic is in general useless and should be made an officer upgrade. Sharpshooter should have limited ammo to handicap it’s incredible range, making the sharpshooter have to go into the trench and off map for a bit to get more ammo before coming back. Those are just my suggestions though, good game anyway.

Good game with issues

Let me start by saying this is a fun little time passer. For what it is, it’s neat. The only real issues I see are with the survival mode. Many of the power-ups are almost entirely useless. The “Better Rations” in particular is absolutely unnecessary, since by the time it comes to have any use, you’ve already been overwhelmed. Also, the “Unexpected Potential” power up has a 1/3 chance to give you a flamethrower unit. Their range is laughable, their damage is extremely underwhelming, and they do damage your other units when they explode upon death. The “Experimental Medicine” which revives your fallen soldiers does NOT apply to your machine gun nests. Once they’re gone, it’s over. Also, don’t even bother with artillery/mortars. You won’t hit the broad side of a barn, and if you do, the damage is rarely lethal. Strafing run is OK once you figure how to use it well, but the 50 second cooldown is harsh. I think the ability to re-roll power ups would cure many of these problems. Other than what’s listed, it’s a decent game. Just needs some tweaking.

Tedious attritional nonsense

This, like most iOS games these days, has the delightful mechanic of introducing you to the gameplay, showing you how it works, allowing you 10-20 minutes of enjoyment, then putting up barriers showing how impossible it is to advance meaningfully unless you start shelling out cash. The graphics are appealing and well done, the gameplay, though basic, is fun at first. There is no real strategy to speak of other than allocating purchasable stat points to units, and directing their movement on the battlefield, which seems to have little impact on how successful an attack is. Playing smart will only help you get ahead in a trivial sense. It’s easy to see how an “endless” campaign will turn into a slog of fighting stat padded units that are impossible to defeat unless you spend increasingly absurd amounts of money. I’m ok with paying $5-10, even $20 for a well crafted game. I’d rather buy and enjoy it then buy it, lose units that can only be saved with currency, grind through a few levels for little gain, and get upset at how little my actions have any impact on the results. That’s not “fun” to me.

This game is just a few small features away from greatness. I wanted to give 5 stars but a few things are holding it back for me 1. Being able to give more orders than to charge would be nice, like being able to halt and retreat, would add just that little extra depth to make things more interesting. 2. An anti armor infantry unit would be fantastic, perhaps rifle grenades or sticky grenades, something that can help tip the battle in favor of your tanks 3. Ability to select more than 5 units to command directly would be super. And perhaps expand commands beyond movement but to also be able to place a flag on sand bags and have them use them for cover or on a tank and have them follow behind, classic WW1 tactic 4. I know it’s hard for small developers but multiplayer would be awesome, I’d love to blow up my French’s friends armies, much more difficult to implement than other stuff mentioned here but hey why not. 5. A simple guide to explain what everything does, I have no idea what the gear button does, and took me a minute to realize you could highlight and command the troops to move around. This game is fun, the art is phenomenal, the gameplay loop is simple but enjoyable. A lot of good things going for it and it’s close to being a great for me but some things are holding it back from 5 stars, I believe this game certainly has the potential to be a 5 star game tho, thanks for reading!

Amazing

This game is something I’ve been looking for. I love the epic battles. All you can do is go up from here. I paid the 2.99 and it’s worth it for the full experience. I love the platoon stats and the ability to rename it. Just throwing out ideas here: - Custom squads down to the individual soldier -maybe even upgrade them too - soldiers that survive, earn a veteran status buff - soldiers have ranks indicating their experience -have more than one objective on a map - include medic skins in the platoon - have different jobs in a platoon that serve a purpose. -Add a mode where you can send any number of company’s at the same time. It would be epic to see 5 companies rush into a battlefield. Either way, These are all just things my imagination has cooked up in about 12 hours of playing, but this game is perfect as is. Thank you

Daily Rewards

This game is very fun and I enjoy playing it on my free time! I went ahead and bought that ultimate pack for $2.99. Unfortunately, the daily rewards keep freezing my game every time I complete the challenge and collect my money. I can press down the buttons and the background of the menu is still moving, but the buttons don’t go anywhere when I try to switch screens or actually play. It forces me to restart my game which causes my daily reward money to disappear and the daily challenge isn’t there any more. The daily rewards is a part of why I bought the pack to gain money a little and upgrade troops faster but, it doesn’t even work. Kinda disappointed but it’s still a great game! Hopefully they fix this problem soon.

Specialists

The game is amazing, especially for a mobile trench game, i downloaded it a while back and enjoyed it but then left it alone cause i got bored, i just recently started playing it again due to being bored and wondering if it was updated and when i started playing i was amazed, Survival mode? A better Officer menu? Cool menu art? Holy Holy, but as i was playing survival i noticed the specialists are pretty cool and was wondering how to get them, i eventually figured out but it turns out i have to spend REAL LIFE money on it, i would but i messed up my app restrictions thing and lost the password to it and now i cant purchase anything, the game would be better if the specialists we free to get but you had to buy em for like 10 or 20.
