Subway Surfers City isn't just a sequel; it’s a massive leap forward that breathes fresh life into the endless runner genre. After over a decade of the original formula, City introduces a sense of verticality and speed that makes every run feel more dynamic. The 'Wall Run' mechanic is a game-changer, allowing you to bypass ground-level obstacles and discover high-altitude coin paths that were previously unreachable. The graphics have received a significant overhaul, with vibrant lighting and fluid animations that make Subway City feel like a living, breathing metropolis.
What truly sets this version apart is the meta-progression. The city-building element gives you a genuine reason to keep running beyond just chasing a high score. Using blueprints to upgrade your 'Surfer Hub' provides tangible rewards, like increased power-up durations or exclusive boards. It successfully merges the addictive 'just one more go' loop of the classic game with the long-term satisfaction of a management sim. Whether you're a veteran surfer or a newcomer, this is the definitive way to experience the franchise.
Next-gen 3D graphics and fluid animations
Dynamic parkour moves including wall-running
Strategic city-building and hub customization
Daily competitive trials and global leaderboards
Look for the glowing blue panels along the city walls. Swiping toward them allows you to run horizontally along the buildings, which is essential for reaching secret blueprints and avoiding high-speed trains on the ground.
Collect Blueprints to build and upgrade structures in your hub. Upgrading the 'Board Shop' increases your starting speed, while the 'Juice Bar' extends the duration of your Jetpack and Super Sneakers.
No, Subway Surfers City is a standalone experience with a unique roster of surfers and exclusive progression systems.
I didn’t think a sequel to Subway Surfers could actually feel fresh… but wow, this one absolutely delivers. It keeps everything that made the original addictive and somehow levels it up in every possible way. The visuals are stunning. The environments feel bigger, more detailed, and way more immersive. The lighting effects, the movement in the background, the smooth animations — it all makes every run feel alive instead of repetitive. You can tell real care went into upgrading the design without losing that colorful, high-energy vibe that made the original iconic. Gameplay-wise, it feels tighter and faster in the best way. The controls are super responsive, and the new obstacles keep you on your toes without feeling unfair. There’s a perfect balance between challenge and fun — it pushes you to improve but never feels frustrating. The added mechanics and power-ups actually add strategy, so it’s not just endless swiping anymore. You can plan your runs, stack boosts, and really chase high scores with intention. The character designs are creative and full of personality, and the new boards are easily some of the coolest in the series. Unlocking content feels rewarding, and there’s always something to work toward. The progression system feels smoother and more engaging than before. What really makes this sequel shine is how it respects the original. It doesn’t try to completely change the formula — it enhances it. It feels nostalgic and modern at the same time, which is honestly hard to pull off. Whether you’ve been playing Subway Surfers for years or you’re brand new to the game, this sequel is a total win. Addictive, polished, and genuinely fun. Easily a five-star experience.
It’s basically just the original subway surfers but with more to do. Kinda. The designs look nicer and higher quality and I would love to collect them all..but I cant with this season mechanic. Having to pay almost $10 per month for a new character and a skin (i know there are a lot of other rewards I’ll get to that) is pretty over the top. Yeah you guys want money and all that but a FULL character that (to my knowledge) you can’t get anywhere else is a bit much, but I have solutions for this! You can make an option to buy the pass with keys and just make some of the rewards worse so free to play people can get the character and skin, you can do like how it was in the original game and have the character and skin for free towards the end of the pass and keep the best rewards paylocked (minus the skins), or hell you could at least make the character the final reward and have the skin be the battle pass reward. Theres 3 perfectly fine options right there. If something is changed about seasons to make them more free to play friendly than 5 stars but other than that it’ll remain at 4. Theres pretty much no other reason to complete the pass besides the hoverboard at the end if you dont pay those $10.
I used to play the old one a ton when I was younger. I was really excited for this one. My first impressions are it is definitely fun but there’s a lot of “watch this ad to get…” or a special for $1.99 to get a ridiculous amount of tokens and what not to upgrade. I’m not opposed to micro transactions at all. When those transactions heavily change the speed of your progression and alter your scores, I have a problem. The way the micro transactions are done is honestly really predatory and seem like they’re trying to milk every penny. Unfortunately it is not just this game though. All major game industries are completely focused on their greed and not the consumers anymore. Indy developers are dominating the gaming industry because of that. This review is 3 stars because it is still enjoyable to play and a little nostalgic. I’m just very unhappy how all games are now a days. I feel for the younger generation because they will never experience truly great and well made games like my generation did in the past.
I am enjoying Subway Surfers City especially because of all the nostalgia it’s bringing me! I remember playing Subway Surfers all the time as a kid and loving the fast paced, colorful, stimulating game with cool characters and music and I’m glad to say this is bringing back those feelings. I will say, if you’re a fan of the original game, this version is so much more difficult. I am genuinely struggling to get used to all the new elements added. With the new features, the game is almost set up like Clash Royale, with upgrading the characters “cards” with these points to gain playing. It’s not bad necessarily, just unexpected. Which is how I’ve felt playing this overall. For new players, expect to feel challenged in this the first few runs.
I don’t know how they did it. This game is so gorgeous that I just sat at the title screen for 3 minutes when I first booted the app, and yet after playing for an hour my ancient phone STILL isn’t running hot. THIS is how you do optimization. The gameplay is so much fun too, it takes the concept of subway surfers and ramps things up with platforming challenges in the sky, tons of interactive elements that use the stomp, and extremely responsive controls. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back to the first game, this one is a huge improvement in every way. I honestly don’t think I wouldn’t done a single thing differently if I was in the drivers seat of development. Bravo to the team.
Overall from my personal experience when playing this for the first hour, I can safely say it is superior gameplay wise and variety to the first game tenfold. But the monetary aspect is a little expensive, 10 dollars for seasonal passes AND for bonus rewards, it’s kind of frustrating, it would be a better bang for your buck if the bonus rewards were decreased in value from the $9 to only $2, plus the more abundant ads than the first game. There are a few moments of stuttering but doesn’t affect gameplay at all and happens rarely but it’s worth checking out that bug. So even though the gameplay is upped the, the monetary aspect just shys me away from a full 5 star review.
I honestly thought it was just gonna be the same game which it is in some regards I mean the core experience is still there but they have done a lot to change the progression and and look of thing to make it feel worth playing and progressing through unlocking things is fun and leveling up characters/boards and them having perks tied to specific characters is actually a really cool touch, I’d say give it a shot. If you don’t like it there’s always. The original. Monetization isn’t great battle passes different passes. You can buy you can buy. Energy to progress further in the story. They definitely toned up the monetization and all the worst ways but the core game is fun enough makes up for it.
From my few days with the app, a few things became glaringly obvious. I think the main blunder is that the predicament that lead to this game. SYBO could simply not replace the graphics of Subway Surfers, it is the OG App Store game and that’s literally the reason Subway Surfers City exists, a game with updated graphics and gameplay. While I love the graphics and new looks on Jake and friends, and the amount of extra stuff you can do that doesn’t just consist of running for a top score, I can’t help but wonder how the developers are going to run and work with 2 versions of essentially the same game, I have this gut feeling that with some time, one game will be more preferred than the other, than the lack of quality will really start to show.
