Our Expert Score

88/100

Munchkin Digital is a masterclass in how to port a chaotic, backstabbing tabletop classic to the small screen. Dire Wolf has managed to capture the irreverent spirit of Steve Jackson’s original card game while smoothing out the 'rules lawyering' that often slows down physical play. The quirky John Kovalic art style is perfectly preserved, and the animations add just enough flair without feeling overbearing.

What makes this digital version shine is the cross-platform multiplayer and the slick interface. In a game where keeping track of levels, combat strength, and equipment can get messy, the digital HUD does all the heavy lifting for you. This leaves you free to focus on the most important part of Munchkin: waiting for the perfect moment to screw over your friends. The solo challenges are a nice touch for practice, but the real meat is in the online lobbies where the social engineering and 'temporary' alliances truly live.

Amazing but not perfect yet

TLDR: Thanks for making Munchkin Digital! Sure it ‘aint perfect, but y’all actively improving it — that speaks loudly. Continued support directly helps the developers to improve it, which they appear to be doing. Bugs/Updates: It’d be great if you can see the other players gear. Also please look into “go up a level cards, specifically 1000 GP - didn’t seem to allow me to use it on myself in tutorial, hopefully not the case in normal gameplay. 5 Stars! ———————————- The Longer Version: I give it 5 stars so far, because it’s a game many of us have been hoping for digitally and you guys made it happen. Sure it’s not perfect, but y’all are actively fixing bugs. Looks like it was released like 2 years ago or more and there have been tons of updates, even just a week ago, this shows me you’re truly invested in the player/customer experience, not a quick money grab, that’s respectable. I read some aren’t satisfied with what they paid for but investing time into improving the game cost time and/or money and these small purchases make a huge difference to the developer(s). I believe this is amazing for what it is, and with continued support and feedback, it may even eventually become the preferred way of playing for many people. Good job team! Pertaining to bugs/updates, I noticed the AI’s using one-shot level-up cards on themselves, my 1000 Gold Pieces one-shot level up did not allow me to select me as a target but this was also in the tutorial so maybe that’s why.. I’m not sure.

Amazing

Absolutely amazing! So happy to finally be able to play one of my favorite card games of all time digitally. The AI is pretty decent albeit a bit predictable at times. The challenges have been super fun (still gotta beat the heroic difficulties), def gave me ideas for unique rules for tabletop Munchkin as well. I did have one weird bug where when I save/exited a challenge and went back to finish it, and won, it didn’t register I beat it, but didn’t happen again when I did the same thing later. Other thing that happened a couple times is I clicked to open a menu when I apparently couldn’t and it queued up that menu a ton of times and I had to exit like 5-15 of it 😅 but otherwise plays super smooth. Can’t wait to see some expansion packs released in the future!

Needs some work

It’s a portable, solo version of Munchkin, so, hooray for that, but it needs some additional work to fully capture the silliness of the original game. Most problematic, the app crashes immediately upon beginning a game on my iPad Mini 2 (running latest available version of iOS 12.x). If the app advertises itself as running on iOS 11.x or later, it should work on this device. It functions properly on my iPhone SE, but the UI could stand to be improved. I’d love to see an option to have newly drawn or newly played cards remain on the screen until tapped, to the give the user time to read the text on the card (and to more easily follow what actions the AI has just taken). Similarly, it would be great to have the flavor/bonus text from the physical version on the cards as well. The interface/gestures for looking at cards before playing them could also use some refinement. The tap-and-hold-to-view gesture makes sense, but if the user’s finger moves a single pixel the card either returns to the player’s hand or is miniaturized in anticipation of being played. More tolerance on the hold gesture would be good, or a progressive/scaling animation so that the card could be dragged partway up to be read and then dragged to a target screen area to be played. The cards-in-play/equipped/carried interface could also use some work. It’s not always clear what’s selectable. I hope to see this app version of the game continue to improve and evolve - there’s tons of potential here!

Leaves a lot to be desired

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great way to play Munchkin on the go but I feel like there’s a lot more that needed to be done before the mobile release that would warrant the app’s $10 price tag. There’s a lot of clunkiness on the interface especially when trying to view card text or certain abilities not activating properly just to name a few issues. As a suggestion, there should be some sort of in-game reward system to give you points or coins whenever you win a game to buy avatar skins or cosmetics, etc. Because whenever you win, it feels extremely overwhelming getting taken immediately to the main screen. I think the achievements are a great start but something a little more tangible to the players would be better. I’ll support this company either way but it does leave a lot to be desired compared to other mobile card games out there especially against free ones.

Fun but more to be desired

I have played the board game in the past and it was fun. But many things that you can do in person aren’t implemented. For example mabey I wanted help defeating a monster and I wanted to give one of my cards and a treasure, you can’t do that in this game. Also the menu/inventory while playing isn’t the best and could be improved. Also a few bugs like things i have encountered were not being able to look close at my cards, when getting the tax curse my 0 coin item was took automatically which only happened once. Anyway it’s a great game that could use some minor fixes.

I wanted to love this game. Because Munchkin is awesome.

I wanted to love this game. The board game is very fun and I own all of the original series expansions. But… this game is not a good adaptation of the game. It’s way too frustrating to play even on the largest iphones. The equipping system is awful and unintuitive. The 2D art dancing around and rotating makes the game look cheap. Reading cards is a chore. I wish it looked and felt more like the card game. Less trying to not make it a card game and more making it the actual card game. Even the card layout is different than the actual card game. I wish the equipping system had a predetermined layout, like head/hands/armor/feet slots so I didn’t have to scroll around trying to figure out what card is what. This game isn’t worth the $10 I paid for the amount of frustration I feel with the UI while playing it. I should have waited for a steam sale and played it on a monitor.

Fun but glitchy

First, I’m super happy there’s an online version available! I’ve played a few times, once with a friend and several times in local play. I tried to join someone’s online game but, after all the players joined, I got an error message saying the game couldn’t load and my screen seemed stuck. I’ve also received the Divine Intervention card a few times but it doesn’t go in my hand, it just goes away as though I discarded it. There are many features I really enjoy, such as the usable cards or abilities lighting up when you need them. Very helpful! Room for improvement but I still enjoy it.

To the dungeon!

This is a super fun way to play munchkin. I beat all the challenges which took about a week. Kind of reminds me of the dungeon expansion pack for the actual game. The playing live players has a lot to be desired. There is rarely enough people in the game room to even have one game going with 4 people. And when there is, the game takes forever or they get timed out and dropped and turned into AI. There needs to be expansions pack added. New weapons, armor, curses, monsters, etc. I have played so many times I plan for the best set up of classes and armor and can beat the AI every time. Looking forward to some updates.
