The Dragon Gate has been opened. Are you prepared to enter the City of Darkness?
Mr. Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon is a breathtaking point-and-click adventure that serves as a love letter to the historical Kowloon Walled City. The hand-drawn art style is phenomenal, capturing the cramped, neon-lit, and gritty atmosphere of the legendary settlement. As Mr. Pumpkin, you explore this labyrinthine world, solving puzzles that are deeply integrated into the stories of the inhabitants.
The game is more than just a puzzle collection; it's a narrative journey. Each character you meet has a distinct personality and a story to tell, reflecting the real-life history of the people who lived in the Walled City. The puzzles are clever and require you to pay close attention to your surroundings. It’s a rare mobile game that offers such a rich, atmospheric, and culturally grounded experience. If you enjoy games like Machinarium, this is a must-play.
Stunning hand-drawn art style
Deeply atmospheric narrative
Challenging and creative puzzles
Historical setting inspired by real locations
The residents of Kowloon often provide the clues you need for later puzzles. Pay attention to the items they mention, as you'll likely need to trade or find them to proceed.
Look closely at posters and graffiti on the walls. Often, a code for a lock or a pattern for a machine is hidden in plain sight within the background art.
While there are references, the story of Mr. Pumpkin 2 is self-contained and can be enjoyed on its own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this odd game, which involved the protagonist helping people he meets along the way. No creepy ghouls or scares, just nice interactions. It kept me engaged for hours over several days. I didn’t want it to end too quickly, so I made myself stop before I made too much progress in one sitting. But at the same time, I was anxious to see how it would end. I was glad there was a bonus chapter to keep the game going. The conclusion was anticlimactic, so I hope there will be a third version soon. There were several moments where I was stumped by what accomplishment was needed to progress. Sometimes it was just a matter of positioning Mr. P in just the right spot for the game to give up its clue. Like other similar games, he shakes his head when your choice is wrong. Other times it was my inability to see the clue clearly on my small phone screen. One that frustrated me so much was some small, faint writing on a wall I never would have found had I not resorted to watching a walkthrough video. I do wish I had the ability to zoom in. But that was unusual, as almost all other clues were clear. Other than those few obstacles, it was so satisfying to think through the problems and successfully solve them. If this is your first attempt at a Mr. Pumpkin game, I recommend starting with the first one to get accustomed to the mechanics. However, in this sequel, the hint option isn’t provided, so you’ll have to think a little harder.
Not sure why this game or this developer doesn’t get more reviews but it prompted me to write one-these guys & this game deserve it! First, a major shout out to this historic depiction of Hong Kong culture! The seedy or sometimes desperate characters who are just trying to do their best to survive, the gorgeous intricate artwork, the funky locales & back alleyways of the Walled City were mind boggling. This game took time & great effort to make! The soundtrack from the onset pulled me in & who knew a cartoon pumpkin headed protagonist could be so compelling! The gameplay was intuitive and the puzzles were fun and sometimes challenging, yet not so difficult that I couldn’t figure it out with a little head scratching. Thank you Cotton Games for this beautiful piece that pays homage to a time in Chinese culture that may otherwise be forgotten. It prompted me to explore other Cotton Games (for which I am now a FAN!) as well as learn more about the Walled City of Kowloon. Can’t remember the last time a game prompted me to learn more about history!
I’ve played and finished this game idk how many times now. Every time I kind of forget about it, it pops up during a search and I get nostalgic and have to play it again. I even paid for it a few times, that’s how much I love this game. If you are reading this, and you like/are searching for point and click games, stop! You have stumbled upon a gem. My only problem is it ends! Also, where is part 1? I’ve searched and searched but am yet to even find it in a google search. TO THE DEVS: Please, I’m begging you, make another one! People will buy it, trust me!
I’ve been a gamer for over 30 years, played every genre of game on a multitude of systems. I’ve always loved point and click puzzle adventures and this is one of the best! Cool hand drawn environments, interesting characters, and fun puzzles. The game doesn’t really have a deep storyline… but after you play through the game you’ll surely feel you got to know this unique town and the many characters you interact with on your journey. Enjoy!
Overall I enjoyed the game, but it is too simple. I am a big fan of puzzle games. Mr. Pumpkin 2 is similar, but different from Mr. Pumpkin 1. In the second version there were less puzzles. The best puzzles of the game came after the ending credits, where you find yourself back in the bedroom of Mr. Pumpkin 1 for a round of puzzles. Mr. Pumpkin 2 is more of a scavenger hunt where Mr. Pumpkin 1 is more puzzles. I found that 1 was better than 2. The scavenger hunt in 2 was simplistic...way too easy to connect the dots. Rather than figure out what characters need, they tell you. Like, “go find my remote control”. Way to simple and easy, not challenging enough. If they do a three, they need to have more puzzles and a more challenging “scavenger hunt”.
An interesting and generally well done game, but I ran into a bug that forced me to use a walkthrough. After getting the instructions from the pharmacist there is now way to repeat them. All others characters repeat their instructions when asked but not him. I find the solution, for which I had to use a walkthrough, kind of finicky to manually get right - the controls are not too clear. Other bugs that are less important are that characters routinely forget if they have already given Mr Pumpkin something or already received something from him and repeat things inappropriately.
I knew I would love this game! The arts. The stories. The puzzles. I am as in and a quarter Chinese from my mom. I recognized everything in this game as I saw them when I was little either in person or in Chinese tv shows or drama. I wish the game wasn’t so short. It is different and definitely brought back the nostalgic child memories in me out. I love Asian theme games like these. Praying and hoping and giving my support to creator to make more games like !
I love isoland games. Was hopping this would be similar. It’s close but so issues. I honestly hate the puzzles bc some are so picky that it seems like it’s not the right solution when it is. Becoming frustrating and impossible. I can’t finish it bc I just don’t like the puzzles (some are just random and senseless) and the arcade games blow and u can’t pass. Lots of running back and forth with the hopes the items work. Had to find hints too
