THE SHADOW UPDATE
BALL x PIT: The Shadow Update, brings new balls, a new building, new characters, and new passives to your favorite time-devouring, ball-bouncing roguelite.
Get to grips with a brand new character, a miner known as The Tunneller, whose balls can wrap around the screen. They're also joined by another new hero, the ninja-like Tiptoer, who enemies can't detect at the expense of their health and damage.
The Shadow Update also gives you 10+ new balls to play with. The Reaper Ball has a chance to instantly kill an enemy, the Time Ball drops a timesnare that freezes any enemy in the area, the Warp ball warps to a random spot on the field every hit, and the Venom Ball slows and deals damage and can paralyze enemies. But that's all we're willing to reveal here: you'll have to discover the rest yourself.
Equip the new Arrow of Fate passive and projectiles will no longer hurt you, shooting back retaliatory baby balls instead. Or equip the Full Metal Rapier passive, which deals a percentage of damage for each baby ball and enemy on the field. These are just a few of the new passives you'll find in this update.
Back at your base, the new Guildhall building lets you re-roll previously chosen character upgrades.
Discover all of this, and more, in BALL x PIT's The Shadow Update.
Ball X Pit is a satisfying arcade game that relies on physics and timing. Players drop balls from the top of a peg-filled board, hoping to land them in high-value pits at the bottom. The game introduces various elements like rotating gears, teleporters, and multipliers that can drastically change the ball's path. With dozens of unlockable ball skins and challenging 'Mission' stages, it’s a perfect game for short bursts of fun.
The 'just one more turn' feeling is very strong here. Even though there is a large element of luck involved, the ability to time your drops and the inclusion of various power-ups give you just enough control to feel like you're improving. The daily missions provide a good reason to log in every day, and the global leaderboards add a nice competitive edge. It’s a clean, well-made arcade title that takes a classic concept and polishes it to a high shine.
Satisfying Physics
Dozens of Ball Designs
Challenging Mission Mode
Daily Bonus Spins
The launcher moves side-to-side. Release the ball just as the launcher reaches the far edges to maximize the chance of hitting the x10 multiplier pits.
Catch the 'Green Star' mid-drop to split your ball into three. This is the fastest way to clear 'Fill the Pit' missions.
You can compete for the top spot on the global daily leaderboards, though there is no direct real-time PvP.
Update: As if it couldn’t get any better, the devs have continued to update and expand the game with new content keeping the ball-combining-fun fresh and interesting. They have also over the past months promptly addressed any/all issues or concerns (such as with some controls). (Original) This game is great. There are a ton of characters that unlock as you play and I love how they each can dramatically change how the game is played. I also really appreciate the level variety. I have played many rogue-likes and one of my complaints of those (like slay the spire for example) is a lack of this. I just wanted to note there are no in-app purchases except to buy the full game. (I was a little worried when I saw the label for in-app purchases.)
I’ve played this death on PC and was super excited to play on mobile. And while the great game play loop,is still there, the mobile controls for aiming are just ok. You fine tune the sensitivity which helps, but ultimately can get you into a bad spot. For me there is major sound bug, where there is no sound until you start a level and then has a weird atmospheric music overlayed the game music. Also the mobile left stick seems to jump to a new place after a level up. I hope the controls improve and the bugs are fixed, because this would be a great game to take on the go. Edit: the bugs above have been patched! Unfortunately I have encountered a new one when you use the Shade in combo with the jester. The aiming circle defaults to moving to the bottom of the screen even if you are using the touch controls to move up. So every time you want to change your aim you are fighting with it to go the right direction. Here’s to hoping for another quick fix.
The aiming is worse now that they "fixed" the aim by just making the controls automatically press up, whereas before it had more degrees of freedom, it felt way better, and felt more manual. I was already aiming up, but the problem is that now when the enemies reach the bottom I can't even aim towards them to take them out before they hit my character because the "fixed" aim goes auto press up when I want to press down. A solution is to add a toggle between these 2 set ups, previous more manual aim, vs now auto press up aim. At least, fix so we can aim more horizontal 90 degree angle. When you press left or right on the aim, you can see the control is not aiming fully right or left. Also, if you can add touch aim sensitivity in the settings options, this will be a 5 star review. Please devs, I didn't have an issue with the aim before, I just updated to this "fixed" version and it feels horrible, wish I could roll the version back.
Overall really like this game, the gameplay is easy to learn and experimenting with different combinations is often rewarding. There is also a town building feature to give you buffs or unlock new characters with unique modifiers. It’s a cool feature, but often feels a bit tedious with how you actually upgrade and collect resources, as you launch your workers as you would a ball, which means you end up building your town for how your builders will bounce around, rather than aesthetics, but that’s a personal opinion and doesn’t take away from the actual game. The art style is also very great, it’s an odd mix of drawn 2D/3D, very pleasing to the eye, definitely recommend!
This is honestly one of my favorite games out there and not just on mobile. The replayability is great and the gameplay is very satisfying. I have noticed a few bugs though. For one, I’ve gotten a few evolutions that didn’t show up as unlocked in the encyclopedia like nosferatu and nuclear bomb. I even have the achievements for them. Also when playing as the tactician with another character, balls seem to get stuck a lot moving back and forth through the character, not allowing me to progress in the run. Still five stars, but would love to see these fixed.
I was extremely excited for this mobile port as I preordered it and everything. I have gotten 5-6 hours on the pc version but stopped playing it because I was just too busy. Going into this games release I was really hoping that it would have an option for keyboard and mouse like aiming on mobile rather than controller like aiming. It’s rather annoying to manually aim the reticle and then move your finger over to the fire button. I would’ve appreciated it if there was an option an aiming mode where the reticle follows your finger across the top part of the screen. Crossing my fingers that the devs see this and one day patch this in (not sure if this would be a terribly hard change to make or not). But for right now I wouldn’t recommend this port if you’re used to the keyboard and mouse controls on pc.
The core gameplay loop is genuinely fun, but the Fusion system is where this game loses me — and it’s consistent enough to be a real problem. By the time the first Fusion pickup drops, I can easily have 4 specialty balls in play. That first pickup is invariably a Fission, never an actual Fusion or evolution upgrade — fine, I get it, maybe that’s by design. But then it says “1–5 upgrades” and gives 1. Every time. The next Fission? One. The next Fission? One. At that point the range listed feels like false advertising. The bigger issue is that available Fusion combos don’t seem to reflect anything — not ball level, not current build state, nothing the encyclopedia explains. If I have the pieces for 3 or 4 valid Fusion combos, why am I only offered one? In a roguelike where players are actively chasing builds, that kind of ceiling kills the chase. I’m not asking for the game to be easy. I’m asking for the rules to be legible and the ranges to mean something. Right now the Fusion system feels arbitrary in a way that reads as broken rather than challenging. These issues are consistent across every platform I’ve played on. Fix this and you’ve got a 5-star game underneath.
I love Devolver and all their games! I was skeptical though since it was free but had the $10 unlock FULL GAME option, but it’s truly no ads whatsoever. The game gives you the 1st stage and lets you unlock quite a few characters and unlockables. There’s a bunch to do before you hit the paywall, and once you do, you have TONS more content. This game lets you play until you realize you love the game & need the rest instead of relying on ads for revenue.I wish more games went this route. Excellent game with lots of unlockables and a ton fun. Exactly what I want from Devolver!
