Avignon: A Clash of Popes is one of the most clever 'micro-games' I’ve ever played. The tug-of-war mechanic is deceptively simple but leads to incredibly deep strategic choices. Every time you pull a card toward your side, you have to weigh the immediate benefit of that card's power against the fact that you might be clearing a path for your opponent to nab a game-winning character.
The digital adaptation is flawless, making the 14th-century political struggle feel fast and modern. A game takes less than ten minutes, which makes it my go-to choice for a quick mental workout. The AI is surprisingly tough, and the 'pass-and-play' mode is a fantastic way to introduce friends to the board game without having to set up a physical deck. It’s a must-own for anyone who loves high-stakes strategy in a small package.
Quick sessions (5-10 minutes per game)
Faithful digital board game adaptation
Challenging solo play against AI
Local pass-and-play multiplayer
Unique 'tug-of-war' card mechanics
Choose from two actions on your turn: Push, Pull, Petition, or Excommunicate. Your goal is to move characters from the central 'Map' into your 'Congregation.' Be careful—moving a card closer to you often pushes another card closer to your opponent.
Each card has a unique power that activates when it's in the Map or your Congregation. For example, the Cardinal can pull another card with him, while the Inquisitor can remove an opponent's card. Mastering these interactions is the key to winning in just a few turns.
You win by either collecting three characters of the same type, or by being the first to reach a total of six characters in your congregation.
Overall, fairly well-polished app. The music is great as is the voice acting. Pass and play works well. I've been able to chat with the devs and they seem pretty responsive. There were some bugs with the AI, but the devs continue to push updates that improve the game. Devs, please add the other cards as they become available! I would be happy to pay :)
This game is beyond fun! My SO and I love the actual game but this port is wonderful and makes our lives easier - though the actual game is easy to setup and play, the digital port makes things even easier. The game includes the expansion cards, which makes the replay even more fun. This is a great game to play in ~5-10 minutes and is very easy to learn. Thank you John and his digital port team for doing such a wonderful job on this implementation!
Great game. They go by so fast though! It would be nice to increase the level of difficulty, such as increasing the width of the board or requiring more than three congregates. Either way, I really enjoyed playing and will continue to do so! Good job on the app!
This release crashes, gets the wrong number of characters on screen, ignores rules, etc. Many bugs that weren't in the initial release are in this version. I normally do not write negative reviews, but this seems like it was not even tested. At least half of my games with this release have had a critical bug during play. This may eventually be a four-star app, but it's almost unplayable about half the time now. The underlying game is a great filler, and I hope to play it many times after it is patched.
Really fun game, but the CPU is not very challenging. Also, it freezes at times due to a couple of glitches. Hopefully those issues will be improved with a future release. Would also be nice to play real opponents online.
It's basically unplayable unless you have played the analog version. Even then, there are things lacking like an Undo button. If I could get a tutorial and some basic Quality of Life stuff, I would 5 star this easy.
