Our Expert Score

94/100

Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition is a masterpiece of the 'retro-inspired' RPG genre. It captures the charm and simplicity of 16-bit classics like Chrono Trigger but infuses them with modern sensibilities in combat and progression. You play as Lita, an archer who discovers a world-ending threat to her floating homeland, and the writing is genuinely funny, touching, and human.

The 'Enhanced Edition' adds a completely revamped combat system that is much more tactical, relying on a robust 'skills and stamina' loop rather than mindless auto-attacking. The world is a joy to explore, featuring a unique jump mechanic that adds a layer of light platforming and discovery to the traditional top-down exploration. The soundtrack is sweeping and cinematic, and the pixel art is some of the most vibrant and detailed you will see on mobile. It is a full, 20-hour console RPG experience that fits perfectly in your pocket.

Hidden Gem

I bought this game a year ago and never touched it. After finally cleaning my phone of old apps I finally got around to ply this game and I fully regret not touching it a year ago. This game is extremely good. Feels like an old classic jrpg game almost like Crono Trigger feel. The crafting is a nifty mechanic especially when upgrading gear. I do love the optimization of different style abilities to help the party or yourself. The story is actually really good too. Usually I just spam read, but for once I actually took my time to read the story and talk to people. The best thing about the game is the music. Music is amazing. If you haven’t tried this game, buy it and give it a try. It is a must play game and definitely worth it.

Somehow I missed this game on Steam

This game is a really interesting 16 bit throwback with crafting. I played through the prologue and part of chapter 1. With that being said, I’m really impressed. It would fit right at home with the 16 bit heavy weights. The music and pixel art is outstanding. I really enjoy the music. My only complaint is the game has some weird black squares and graphical issues on the overlay at the title screen along with graphical artifacts in the form of colored borders appearing when a cinematic starts. There are some random crashes when messing with options in settings. I’m running on an iPhone 11. Please fix. I love this game so far.

Great old school JRPG

To an old school JRPG lover like me, this game was better than I ever expected. I liked the story, character development, world building and battle system all overall. While it was certainly not the most sophisticated game system, I thought it was just right for a mobile game. It’s clear that a lot of love and effort went into making this game, and I really appreciate that. Thank you for the great experience. Well worth the money.

Amazing

This is an amazing game! A really good refinement of the JRPG formula. I love how open the world is for exploration, despite being confusing at times. All the modes of exploration, from jumping, crawling and swimming, all of it is fun to explore and find secrets with! My only complaint would be the on screen controls, it is very fiddly and it can obscure vision. I would recommend looking at Doom and Destiny’s touch controls as a good example how to do touch controls for a JRPG on mobile.

Amazing old school

The opening settings on the game are a little confusing, it took me 1 to 2 minutes to figure out, but after that it is pure fun and adventure. Well worth it! This game is one of the best RPG’s I’ve played. I recommend playing with set controls that don’t move with touch. . . Like an old school controller. If you like old school RPG’s, this game rocks!🤘

Great game that needs a little optimization

Really fun game. Love the gameplay and everything about this game. It’s just not optimized for my screen size. Graphics get hung up, weird views happen because this wasn’t optimized for the iPhone screens width. Fix this and add a joystick and it’s 5 stars.

Preview photos leave out the poor control style

Letting others know this is not an iPad friendly game, you have to use virtual buttons on the touchscreen which is awful on a full sized iPad. I would not recommend unless you plan to play with a physical controller. They recommend you hide the virtual controls but I can’t fathom a way that is playable.

Not made for mobile

It took me five minutes just to successfully choose the default language, and then after five more minutes of being unable to navigate even the first menu to start the game I give up. This is clearly neither designed for mobile or even properly tested on mobile. I have an XR so it’s definitely not an issue of outdated hardware, it’s just terrible UI design.
