What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state. As Edith, you will explore the colossal Finch house, searching for stories as she explores her family history and tries to figure out why she's the last one in her family left alive. Each story you find lets you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death, with gameplay as varied as the stories themselves.

Our Expert Score

95/100

What Remains of Edith Finch is a staggering achievement in narrative design, and its transition to mobile loses none of its haunting beauty. As Edith, you return to your colossal, nonsensical family home to uncover the stories of your relatives, each of whom met a premature and often bizarre end. The game is essentially a collection of short stories, but calling them that feels like an understatement. Every room in the house is a meticulously detailed time capsule, and every flashback introduces a completely new gameplay mechanic—from a comic book slasher sequence to a factory worker’s daydream that manifests as a high-fantasy adventure.

The emotional weight of the game is immense. It explores themes of legacy, grief, and the 'Finch Curse' with a delicate touch that avoids being purely morbid, opting instead for something more magical and surreal. On a mobile device, the intimate nature of the storytelling feels even more personal. The touch controls are intuitive, and the environmental interaction remains fluid. It is quite simply one of the most essential storytelling experiences in the medium of gaming, and the mobile port handles the technical demands of the house’s complex architecture with surprising grace.

Q&A

While it deals with death and has eerie moments, it is not a traditional horror game; it is a psychological and magical-realist mystery.

wonderful game, frame rate isn’t great.

I understand optimization issues and the artistic choice to prioritize a cinematic aesthetic, but in the age of iPad Pro M2, I’m pretty sure you could at least offer the option to push 60 frames. I was expecting the same experience as on PC and i was slightly disappointed in the first 3 seconds of starting the game when it chugged 30. I’m sure —to most people— this is not a huge detraction, but I haven’t played a game at 30 frames for years. I have become accustomed to something a bit smoother; It is more important to me than resolution or fancy effects. That said, I like the controller support and visuals which are, honestly, almost on par with pc. Also, unlike many high fidelity AAA ports, it seems rather stable. kudos.

Spectacular!!!!

Wow! Digital artistry and immersive storytelling at its finest. This sets a new bar for the art of the possible. Can’t wait to see more! This is an amazing, highly interactive, totally immersive, story / game experience. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The execution is flawless, the story is captivating, the part the player plays is intuitive and the game aspect makes you think just enough so you feel like you are part of the story telling. I really appreciate the ongoing narrative that stitches the story together while the player explores the space finding story nuggets and interacting with the environment. Somehow they do this without ever having a frustrating moment where you need to ‘solve a puzzle’ before getting to the next part of the story. I am so impressed with the creators for building this experience, finding the exact right balance of interaction (at least for me) and pushing into a totally new frontier of storytelling. The story itself is wonderful - slightly dark but it doesn’t feel creepy. The design of the world / house you explore is amazing and so creative and inventive. I especially enjoyed the select few games within a game that they created. I won’t spoil the fun in this review but suffice to say that there are several layers to the interaction and several unexpected interactive twists. The software, interface, and general mechanics of this worked beautifully for me on my iPhone w/ iOS 14.8.1 (have not yet updated to iOS 15.2). My only nit pick is that while I appreciate the stylistic choice for a desaturated and sometimes hazy color palette / display, there were several occasions where I wished I could see just a little more color/detail/contrast in the scene. Maybe that’s just me though.

Very good but it doesn't function on ipad

I use an ipad and i discovered this game and wanted to play, i saw the reviews saying it crashes right after unlocking the book 'there's a secret in this bathroom' i unfortunately ignored these reviews and went ahead and downloaded anyway. Low and behold, it crashes right after the book. I was awful confused because my ipad is the 9th generation and it should function but it didn't. Thankfully my sister has recently gotten a new phone so i got her old phone and connected my apple ID to the phone and was able to download the game for free and my game had saved on my sisters old phone. I was able to continue the game with no interruptions and was overall a great game but i recommend to not download on an ipad, it's almost guaranteed to crash right after the pink bathroom no matter what generation of ipad you have.

Gorgeous game, just one major issue…

TW: several deaths - if deaths are a hard topic for you, I don’t recommend this Side note: kind of spoilers but no major giveaways of the actual plot What remains of Edith Finch is an incredible game with a heart wrenching, bittersweet story line that I completely enjoyed playing. The graphics are pretty and overall nice to look at. There are some small bugs that I feel aren’t acceptable for a 5 dollar game but it was still interesting. A major issue was the fact the game kept crashing when I reached specific areas. (I’m using an IPad which is relatively new) For example, it kept crashing when I finished Molly’s story which was bothersome. I deleted the game and reinstalled it a few times and managed to reach Calvin’s bit. I finished swinging and the game crashed repeatedly. I’ve tried everything from restarting to deleting the game but nothing worked. I haven’t been able to complete it. Please fix this!! I really want to finish the game :c TL;DR: great game but it crashes often.

Great game spoiled by terrible move system
Sat Dec 21 2024 drtimhill

The game is engrossing but the control system to move around in the game is abysmal. You press and then move your finger to indicate direction to move. Sadly this has two HUGE problems. First, your finger is over the top of the item you are trying to move towards, which is clunky, and second (the killer) many times you cannot move AT ALL until the view lines up just right. Want to walk down a road? Nope, you can’t do that until you fiddle around till the view of the road is just right before you can move .. with no indication if you have found the right view or not. This is so bad it basically ruins the game. Very sad.

Absolutely loved it. Left me leaving wanting more!

I had no issues with game play, some things are challenging but it was great! I wish it had been longer and I wish every story app was this interactive. I don’t recommend for young ages but as an adult I enjoyed it. I just couldn’t break away. If you have a day to yourself and just want to relax at home, it’s finishable. Oh and when you get to the treehouse just approach the ladder and climb it. There’s no clue there.

Keeps crashing..

This is such a fun game! I love it. But it crashes every time I get to the pink bathroom. ☹️it’s so annoying. Please fix it. ☺️ I wanna play threw the rest of the game. It keeps crashing…and it says it works on this iPad…but it keeps going out of the game. Can you please fix it? 😁 Edit: can you please fix it where it works on an ipad 9th generation? Please? ☺️ it keeps crashing when I finish the Calvin level. 🙁

Wow. I very rarely leave reviews, but I just finished watching the credits and had to come share my thoughts. This story is so diverse in its elements, beautiful, poignant. I took several screenshots just because the scenery was so breathtaking. If you like story-driven games, especially those that deal with the concepts of life, death and the love you find in between (basically, if you liked Spiritfarer), give this one a try.
