Unmatched: Digital Edition is a masterclass in how to port a physical board game to the digital space. The 'impossible' matchups—like Medusa vs. Bigfoot or Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula—provide a fantastic thematic hook that never gets old. As a tactical skirmish game, it relies on a clever card-driven combat system where bluffing and hand management are just as important as positioning on the map. The digital version automates the somewhat fiddly rules of the physical game, making for a fast-paced and seamless experience.
The inclusion of both real-time and asynchronous multiplayer is a huge win for mobile players. I can take my turns throughout the day or sit down for a heated 20-minute match. While the base game comes with a solid roster, the sheer variety of DLC characters keeps the meta fresh. Each hero feels truly unique, with their own specific deck and sidekicks that require totally different strategies to pilot effectively. If you're a fan of tactical card games or the original board game, this is a must-have.
Iconic hero roster with unique playstyles
1v1 and 2v2 online multiplayer
Asynchronous and real-time play modes
Stunning card art and digital environments
Challenging AI for solo practice
Every hero in Unmatched has a finite deck. Success comes from knowing which high-value cards to save for the 'end game' and when to use your sidekicks as shields to preserve your hero's health.
Maneuver your units on the map to gain high-ground advantages or block enemy movement. Combat is resolved by playing cards face-down, leading to intense mind games during the reveal phase.
Yes, you can challenge players across different platforms in online multiplayer matches.
I’ve currently arbitrarily given this a 3. The tutorial hung when it asked me to “Tap the EXCALIBUR card.” I’ve tried to report this directly to ACRAM but the message form continues to fail. So both the support web site and the game have issues. Hopefully both will soon be rectified or maybe someone can tell me if I’m doing something wrong in the tutorial. Updated to a 4 (really a 3.5) mainly due to quick response by the developer. The game seems to play well (I don’t know the board game). The interface is pretty clunky and at times the images can obscure the board. The size of the fighter’s bases can be so large as to make seeing the underlying space difficult. Additionally the online interface has issues. I play mostly async. It’s cumbersome to re-establish your game. Additionally if you don’t exit the online section before ending your session, when you come back you will either be plunked back into the starting menu, or if you are still in the online section if you try to go to lobby, it will crash. None of these are terrible but should have been identified via beta testing. I assume live online play is cleaner.
I have a lot of board games. Unmatched is my favorite of them all. I play it with anyone willing, I watch videos, I look for all the clues and spoilers as to what’s coming in the next sets…I love the game. This app though, seriously disappointing so far. On launch I immediately bought it and the season pass. Since then it’s just sadly been one disappointment after another. Each new character that comes out is basically unplayable at launch and patch after patch still can’t seem to fix a multitude of things. The vast majority of my games end in the game crashing or freezing or the AI on “hard” doing a variety of nonsensical things that make it not fun. And I would play with my friends instead of the AI, in fact I got it to do so and encouraged all my friends to get it. I’m sorry I did. I’ve barely completed any games, they are disappointed with me at the waste of money, and unless they have an IPhone, I can’t find even find them to play. It’s supposed to be cross compatible but it doesn’t work. The app looks beautiful which is why I give it two stars, and I so badly want it to be good, but after waiting and waiting through delay after delay for it to launch, then waiting and waiting as bug after bug is fixed… I think I may be giving up on it. Maybe I’ll come back in a few years and see if it’s better. Sad day for this massive unmatched fan.
I love playing the board games with my family. It has been an amazing chance for me to spend time with them. We all decided to get this digital version, so we could practice in our free time. While the digital version is a lot of fun, I found many bugs/issues with the game as I play. The biggest issue happens when the AI Dracula is playing. It will unpredictably stop the game and send to a loading screen. From there, it reopens the match but it won’t allow me to play the game. It gets stuck on the loading map and the AI won’t finish its processing/decision making. This happens with other characters but it stands out most with Dracula because it happens almost every game. The game will only function properly if Dracula is not played at all. Other than the bugs, this game is great.
So let me start by saying I’m a huge fan of Unmatched and I love the board game. As far as quick two player board games this is one of my favorites. So I was naturally excited for the mobile adaptation, however this doesn’t quite stand up to the legacy the board games built. First off the game comes with only 4 characters and two maps. Anyone who has battle of legends v.1, this is all it comes with. For $12 you can add a season pass which comes with 8 more character. A little thin at release but I have no issue with the pricing on the season pass. The real problem of the game comes with the lack of a human vs human mode locally. How can the mobile edition of a two player game not offer a two player game? They really need to add a 1 vs 1 local mode. It seems like a obvious omission that makes no sense. The other issue is the online… it’s 2023 online systems are bad as unmatched digital edition shouldn’t still exist. The game makes you join other lobbies or host your own, the problem is people are idle and the pace rate online is dirt slow. There needs to be a timer because people take serval minutes to move or just go idle and there’s no timer. There also should be a quick match mode that just pairs you up with another player as opposed to having to join a lobby then picking a seat then … it’s a slow and tedious online that doesn’t need to be. All in all this digital edition is a disappointment, I can’t go lower then 3 (although it really should be) due to how much I love the board game. This digital edition desperately needs local 1 vs 1 and a streamlined online system.
After playing a few hours, I had a few good matches where everything worked fine. But I also had several moments where halfway through a match the game would abruptly crash during an action such as attacking or defending. I would attempt to reload the game and resume the match, but it crashes at the exact same point over and over again. So I have to start a completely new match. Which is not fun at all knowing it could just crash again. Also the UI is very clunky and things feel to overlapping at times. I absolutely love the board game, so I have high hopes for the digital edition. Hoping they get everything sorted out soon
I love the physical game, so this is not a review of that. This app is incredibly buggy. I commend them for pushing patches out so quickly, but honestly it feels like we are going backwards. There are now more gameplay bugs than there were at launch. Medusa is barely playable because her versatile attacks can’t be used by her (only her Harpies). Alice frequently changes size for no reason or uses the wrong size ability (based on the mini shown). Sinbad’s journeys work sometimes but not others (cannot see a rhyme or reason when it works or not). Online gives you lots of options, but it is easy to get kicked out of a match, and once out, you cannot get back in. That’s tricky, but I hope they get that working sooner or later. Finally, I think they needed to launch with what the “Season Pass” will eventually bring. Four relatively simple heroes is a pretty bad experience considering we’ve already paid for the app. And those that go for the season pass already have access to some much stronger heroes (and depending on who you ask, possibly the absolute strongest hero) in the game. Edit: Thanks for responding devs, though honestly it just make me even less likely to play the game. First, I never said I enjoy Unmatched Digital. In fact, I hate it. Secondly, when I posted this a month ago, I *tried* to submit reports using the feedback tool, except after 20 tries or so, not a single one would successfully send. Downloaded patch just now, tried again, still cannot submit feedback. I can play the online portion (awful bugs permitting), but cannot submit feedback. I don’t think I will try it again.
Update. Great developer response. They obviously want this game to be perfect. Honestly with how some things are a little confusing. The reports I have made so far has been my misunderstandings of how things work I cannot recommend this game enough if you have any interest in this genre! Upgrading to 5 stars. I adore this game and will change my rating to 5 stars once bugs are patched. I have submitted three bug reports so far, none of them game breaking. I have found more minor ones, but am too lazy to report every one. I dont work for the company!
My favorite board game comes to mobile! And so out the window goes my work productivity! Thankful to have this great game in my pocket at all times to log a few turns with buds whenever I have a moment. This is such a great way for me to play with some friends who live across the country. The transition from board to digital isn’t seamless but it’s about the best you could hope for, I think. Which is to say it’s still fun and easy to pick up. The digital animations and the new skins are neat features in the app. Can’t wait to see more heroes added!
