Top Drives is a unique take on the racing genre that feels more like a strategic card battler than a traditional racer. You don't drive the cars yourself; instead, you're the manager deciding which vehicle is best suited for a wet dirt track versus a dry asphalt drag strip. This makes it incredibly addictive for 'car nerds' who know their 0-60 times and drivetrain types.
The sheer volume of licensed cars is insane—over 1900 vehicles from real manufacturers. Collecting them and upgrading them to win specific challenges becomes a real obsession. It’s the ultimate 'stats' game for automotive enthusiasts.
Over 1,900 officially licensed cars
Real-world stats for every vehicle
Strategic racing on different surfaces (dirt, asphalt, ice)
Dynamic weather conditions
Multiplayer 'Live Events' and leaderboards
Deep car upgrading and tuning system
Look at the track conditions before picking your cars. If the track is 'Wet', prioritize cars with 'Standard' tires over 'Performance' tires for better grip. Use your high-acceleration cars for short drags and high-handling cars for the 'Slalom' and 'Twisty Road' circuits.
Players assemble a hand of 5 cars to compete in a series of matches. Points are awarded based on the margin of victory in each sub-race. Success requires balancing your 'RQ' (Race Quality) limit while choosing the most efficient cars for the event.
RQ stands for Race Quality. It is a value assigned to each car that limits which cars you can use in certain events to ensure fair competition.
I love this game. I haven’t played a game on my iPhone in years. I love the variety of cars, the addictive nature of the game, the detailed stats, and the fact that it’s perfect for on-the-go. This is the perfect introduction to card-based games, since I’m a car enthusiast. I love it. An excellent idea for a game. But there are a few areas where the game could be improved. The first area is the general programming. The game runs great, but every now and then I will cross the finish line first (win) by a landslide and I will still lose. On Germany 2 I used my BMW 330d against a Mercedes 190E Evolution and I was far ahead until the end and I crossed the line first, yet I still lost somehow. Second, while this game has an unbelievable amount of cars, there are some gaping holes in the manufacturer lineup. There are no cars from FCA (Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep etc). This could be a licensing problem but I still look at it as a flaw. I would love to see more brands enter the game potentially in a future update. One more flaw (Not really a flaw, but something I think could be added) is local/online multiplayer. This would be great. There could be a time limit for choosing cards. A couple more VERY minor complaints; the details and stats are microscopic during races, and I have to look closely to see vital information. I have an iPhone 8 Plus, I couldn’t imagine playing on a smaller phone. And my final minor complaint, some of the cars are mismatched with the pictures. For example, the 1998 Mercedes A160 has a second-gen 2005 on the card for the picture. There are others too like the Cadillac Eldorado etc. but overall, GREAT game, I’m hooked.
The slalom test needs a touch up. The entirety of the slalom test is a variable in which it is quite literally impossible to predict the outcome of the race if the stats of the two cars are closely comparable. I have seen on multiple occasions now in which my car will have a lower 0-60 but worse handling by a couple points and I will lose the race and on the flip side of things I have seen the AI have a lower 0-60 and worse handling but win the race. How does this even make sense. Mind you in both situations the 0-60 time is only slightly better. It almost feels as though the AI is given the benefit in either case. In order to guarantee success I have to best the AI car’s handling by the minimum of 5 points and even then I cannot be certain as the times are within fractions of a second of each other. In comparison to other races where you can ensure victory by having your car’s stats best the AI’s by only a couple points, slalom’s seemingly RNG nature is frustrating to put it simply. Not to mention that after losing and consulting the “Race Info”, the reason is always a spit in the face as it has the audacity to label the AI’s victory as one based off having better handling/0-60 stats even in cases where the stats are the exact same providing no useful information. In summary, the slalom test appears to have no real basis of which a victory is decided in cases where the stats between both cars are comparable but seems to favor the AI and the “Race Info” summary gives no useful information in such circumstances.
The new update has only seemed to have brought 1 or 2 good things here and there, yet everything else has been bad. First of all, they switched a ton of the cars that were decent from the green and blue ranks up to yellows and reds. Not only do you lose all the work and upgrades you put into your cars that move up a rank, the tens and thousands of dollars (game dollars) of work, the hours and hours of playing, and take it away, not even changing anything but a few cars stats ( there weren’t even that many cars that actually had a stat change), but the only compensation they give you is just some measly upgrades for the mediocre cars that are left in the previous rank. For example, I had an off road rally car, previously yellow rank, and moved up to red. Literally one point up, from 49 to 50. Nothing was changed about the stats of the car, just moved up one single point. Not only did all the work I’ve put into that car get taken away by making it stock once more, but all they give me is upgrades for the yellow cars, even though the only few I care about already have been maxed out. I would’ve loved if I could’ve had a warning to this, so I could actually prepare for top drives to take all my stuff, and I wouldn’t spend all my in game cash right before they take it away. The least they could’ve done is keep the upgrades on the cars that moved up ranks. Especially the ones that weren’t even changed stat-wise
Great game. Different from other card battle games due to the emphasis on collecting and improving cards in a race themed environment. Updated Jan 17: dropped a star for the reason below: this is now the 4th event asking for the same Volkswagen card needed to play. This is the only game I actually spend money playing and the required car is not available to purchase. So no playing the challenge for the next 4 days. Odd that any game forces you not to play and to have it happen 4 times in 5 months seems like a major error on the developer’s part. You’d think they would want us to be able to log in and play and not keep you out of the game. I’ve been playing for a few months now and really enjoy it. My only complaint is I am now in the third event in the past several months that requires you to have a 1966 Volkswagen To participate, yet I have had no luck in acquiring this card via any events or by purchasing. I can’t understand why this specific car has been needed so often, yet it is so difficult to acquire. It’s a low level card/car and if you don’t have it, you need to wait until the event is over to be able to play the game. Why any developer would make a game that purposely forces you to not be able to play for several days is a fail in my opinion and should warrant a lower star count, but the game is still great and worth playing. At least give us the option to purchase the car to keep people involved in the game play or don’t make it dependent on such a specific car so often. That’s a sure fire way to get people to quit playing.
The game itself is exactly as advertised. You can race to win more cars, open packs, upgrade cars, etc. It was fantastic when this is how the game worked. Now, you’re *REQUIRED* to spend either ample amounts of time or small amounts of money just to win one event. Before, I’d get on the game, check the current events, get in my 5 races for that event and get offline. Well, if you do that now, you will stay in the lowest rank, which will also decrease your rep by 10 per event. My tickets do not refresh for over an hour, so I can’t continuously grind out my races to make it to one of the top spots. I could go 15-0, have more points than anyone else, and I will still be ranked 50th because I didn’t run *THIRTY* races in 24-48h. The expectations are quite high if you want anything decent in the game and it will take you much longer than before. I have played for a few years now and I only have 4 or 5 S class cars, so getting the exact one you want is almost guaranteed to never happen. And again, it will take even longer than those few years to get the exact same results. I have spent a little bit of money on the game as well but never anything above $20. I would say this last update pushed the game from almost P2W to fully P2W. No one has the time for 30 races in a day to get first place.
Fair progression? Really? I mean, it’s actually fine…until you hit the level cap. Then you’re just thrown in events to the wolves that either spend hundreds of dollars a month or have been playing for 8 or 9 years. And don’t get me started on challenges – if you aren’t one of those wolves, you’ll either need to get really lucky or throw away everything else in your life just to maybe win big. I really thought the objectives would’ve thrown a bone, but all they did was let the devs turn the game into engagement bait. A combination of the ensuing overload and a subsequent slot crisis is what finally got me off after three years of decently dedicated playing. I will concede that it’s not completely hopeless, as you might scrape by if you manage your slots (only spend gold on slots and packs with larger amounts of slots) and pick your battles. Also the devs are incompetent – I believe they accidentally gave away a good prize car for what was basically free not too long ago. Going off their last major slip up, it will probably be months before they actually implement a solution, which is more than long enough for people to forget what they’re trying to compensate for in the first place. Despite all of this, it looks like the game has calmed down, and the reviewer summary is more or less correct in its other points, so as someone who quite enjoyed Top Drives when the going was good, I can only rate this game so lowly. Anyway, I’m a hopeless gambler (though thankfully not with real stakes), and the good pulls were always times of celebration. Needless to say, I’ll be giving this game another spin since it does seem to have cooled off. To whoever actually had the gumption to read this far, may your next (or first) legendary not be an RQ 80!
This game is really fun. It is an interesting and new spin on racing games, and for the most part, the card system works well. The problem is that I don’t have time to grind out and get all of the rewards from every level, and I don’t think I’m alone when it comes to that issue. Another thing is that the final boss in Monaco, a race I would expect to be difficult, is impossible with the cars I have been given. Since it is all about luck in what cars you get, my garage contains 1 epic car, and four ultra rares, as my best five cars, four of which I believe are from previous campaign areas. There either needs to be another advanced game mode where you can get better cars withot spending stupid amounts of money, because I get mostly destroyed in PvP, and I am absolutely stumped by the final level. Great game, but now I’ve hit a point where I can no longer progress, giving me little to no reason to keep playing this game. I really hope you guys (Hutch) have a big update planned, because I am very close to giving up. Update: Put of sheer frustration, I sold all of my cars, spent the money on ceramic packs (around 10 total) got 0 ultra rares and proceeded to get rid of all of my cars and all of my money. This game is evil and 100% pay to win. I spent no real money and I am very glad that I didn’t. Screw this game, and I will never play it again unless for some stupid reason Hutch decides to reach out to me. Good day, and do not download this game
I played this game approximately 10 years ago and spent at least a couple hundred bucks on it. One day the app just crashes after a few seconds on the hutch logo. I have reached out to support a multiple times even years apart. Everytime they are the RUDEST people I’ve ever encountered professionally. The speak condescendingly and shift the blame to the customer every chance they get. I explained that they have a bug, but they don’t want to accept accountability. So I have been insanely patient with only backhanded help (last told to factory reset my entire phone and then download the app to prove it’s not my phone that’s the problem😂). To this point in time, I’ve tried all kinds of uninstalling/deleting then redownloading, I’ve changed my Apple ID email. It’s been years of attempting my own fixes. They have tried 0 on their end. Even IF it were on my end still… you couldn’t TRY anything or work WITH me kindly? Like, I’ve tried for a decade. I did last leave them on read because they told me to delete my whole phone after another bad interaction, so I know if they respond here, it will be some reference to their ticket that I didn’t respond to. Sorry, but I use my phone for work and it’s a HUGE commitment for a game to delete all my work. Takes 8-12 hours minimum just to get videos and photos onto external storage. Get real, just check the screen recording I sent and dig into it on your end for once. I really think it’s pathetic that you won’t help me or offer a refund. I’ve been as patient as anyone could hope for a customer to be. Be adults, I’m over the passive aggressive emails.
