Some folks love animated lakes. Some folks love still lakes. And some folks don't want visible lakes at all. This update lets you choose in Settings. Just call me "Lakes" Friedman.
This update also includes a fix for computer opponents, so that they don't weirdly start allocating resources without ever attacking in certain near-stalemate scenarios.
Strategery is one of the most elegant strategy games ever released on mobile. It takes the core concept of Risk—conquering territory through dice rolls—and strips away the fluff to create a fast-paced, high-stakes experience. The minimalist design is its greatest strength, allowing you to focus entirely on the 'front lines'.
The game is deceptively simple: you reinforce your borders and attack adjacent territories. But the AI is brutal, and on higher difficulties, it will punish every single tactical error. Matches can last from two minutes to twenty, making it the perfect 'palate cleanser' for strategy fans. It’s a masterclass in minimalist game design that remains just as addictive today as the day it launched.
Randomly generated maps
Five difficulty levels
Minimalist visual design
Addictive 'one more turn' gameplay
Don't spread your reinforcements too thin. Focus on creating a strong line of defense on your borders while keeping a powerful 'stack' in the center to react to breakthroughs.
Tap your territory and then an adjacent enemy territory to attack. The dice roll is instant, and the outcome is determined by the number of units on each side.
Yes, Strategery supports local 'pass and play' multiplayer for up to 5 players.
I’ve been playing this game for several years. It’s a wonderful simplistic game that passes the time nicely… In the higher levels of play, it does require some real strategy. The one complaint I have is this. In the smaller maps, competition AI gets a little illogical, broken down and downright impossible for most battle scenarios. The AI competitors can beat you with a 2 vs 3 Army attack many many times and you’re never able to beat them when you have 2 armies vs their 3. Also, often times the three AI armies will gang up on you or ignore obvious strategic advantages by attacking either empty spaces or other AI colors. It’s a glitch and they probably will never fix it but it’s just something that I’ve noticed and recorded on video several times. If the developers are willing to discuss this with me I’d be happy to share my evidence. Again, otherwise this is a really fun game and super simple that has survived the many upgrades of iPhone to still be a part of my game catalog!
I’ve had this game for 15 years or so and loved it. When this update randomly happened one day, I hated it and left a one star review because it took away the gameplay mechanics I used. I’m changing it to 4 stars because after some updates, it’s back to great again. The manual reinforcement placement setting with the new “do it for me” button once I don’t care where the extras go is the best thing that has ever happened to the game. The AI behavior is different now but it’s still fun. I’ve had some of the best matches ever since the update a few days ago. The newest one lets me put it mostly back to the way it used to be visually also. I save that last star because I wish it kept better statistics (like records of all colors in each difficulty, and casualty reports after the match for your blobs. The new country names add flavor and it would be interesting to know how many of my subjects I sent to die. It also uses a ton of battery now and my phone gets a bit hot, which never happened on the old one. But the game is more fun than ever and I’m glad it’s being updated. I also just figured out that the old game is still there. Hold the Strategery logo on the main menu and count to like 8. Even my old stats are still in it.
Don’t believe the comments about the levels being all about “ridiculously impossible dice rolls” - that was clearly from a person who tried jumping to the “brutal” level before he had a grasp of the subtleties of the game. I only play in the “brutal” level and it is a true challenge (I win 60-70%), but you have to know what you’re doing. I suggest mastering each level before moving up - and disregarding comments of ignorance. It took about 80 hours to work up to “brutal” for me, and has kept my interest for 7 or 8 years now. I do agree, however, about having to occasionally tap many times to eliminate the last one or two pieces (which is usually the result of poor planning on the player’s part, but I accept it as a kind of ‘punishment’ for not getting the end moves just right, driving my challenge right up to the last move), and that there could be an easy fix, but I find it hysterical that the complaint is coming from a screen name with “...Real Zen...” in it. I play this game every time I have to wait for something (Dr’s. offices, on long flights, etc.) and it is a perfect challenge for me. I highly recommend it. November 2020 Update: This game doesn’t appear to be compatible with IOS 14 - it just won’t open since I “upgraded” my IOS
Update: why is the original version of the game only available via a hidden Easter egg found by tap and holding on the “Strategery” logo for five seconds on the main app screen? Obviously, many players want the option to play the original, so why not just give them an obvious option to do so? Original: Been playing this game for over a decade and suddenly it has a new user interface (UI), new colors, new rules, new everything. The new UI is terrible - muddy colors and unclear board and hard to follow animations. The new developer completely got rid of the old, clean and crisp views in favor of some muddled mess. Please give us the option to play the original version with the original rules and the original UI. New options are fine and it’s great that someone is keeping the game working on newer iOS versions, but why get rid of everything that made the game the game in an update? If the new developer wanted to release a new game, why not release “Strategery 2” vs ruining this great app?!
This update has put new life into the game. I love the new Chaos mode with its random events and the new visual feel. A big thank you to the developer. Also thank you for bringing back the perimeter deployment mode in the recent update. The two things that would make the update absolutely perfect for me would be to 1) Have the AI players be forced to use the same peg placement rules as the human players. For example, if I select perimeter placement, the AI players also have to use perimeter placement. 2) Bring back the “winner takes all” option for battles. That raises the stakes for battles and can lead to bigger swings in power, which makes the game more dynamic.
This is supposed to be a simple strategy game. Apparently, they mean simple as in simple-minded. There is no real level of play, the brutal level just gives the computer ridiculously impossible dice rolls. Also, you finish a game, later go back in and for some unknown reason you are in the middle of the game again. The computer players need to surrender when they are nearly defeated, or at least add an option to auto place armies, otherwise on the last turn, you have to tap 70 times to place your armies that have no chance of being used. There is an auto-place option in the initial game settings, but it makes the most inane decisions that only a fool would use it. As one reviewer wrote, it’s obvious the devs don’t play the game, because so many basic playability features are non-existent in spite of the fact that most games incorporated them over a decade ago. I play this game when I’m really bored of other games. Just can’t recommend it. For pure strategy, Auralux runs circles around this.
Visually it’s… a lot. Even when switching back to og hex tiles and colors and removing the water it’s a lot to process. Why do the positions of the army slots need to face different directions? Why can’t they face the same direction like before? It makes it easier to understand how many armies I have and where. I also don’t love the new maps with lots of water and higher distribution of large territories, but I understand how it works better for the new game mode, which I don’t hate. But it’s impossible for me to play the game with the blobs, just visually does not work for me. At least the hex tiles are an option! We’ve been playing this game for a very long time. I understand having an update, and I will probably try the new game mode a bit more. Can you please implement a mode of the “true classic” version of the game? Same algorithm for map creation, etc.
Good strategy game. Fast to play if needed. Fun to toggle settings like size and full/empty starting map and experiment with different game setups that way. Fun to try to figure out the AIs and predict their moves. Fun to conquer the world Risk-styles. Fun to play on randomly generated maps that are always different and almost always interesting in some unique way. The one problem is that your starting position largely controls whether or not you have a shot at winning this game. But even then, it is often fun to give yourself an inferior starting position and see if you can still win. All in all, awesome game, well worth downloading.
