iOS Launch Issue Resolved | Axis & Allies 1942 Online now launches correctly on iOS devices. We've fixed a crash that was preventing the game from starting.
Axis & Allies 1942 Online successfully translates the complex, hours-long board game experience into a manageable digital format. The brilliance of this adaptation lies in its asynchronous multiplayer; you can take your turn and then get a push notification when your opponent has responded, making it perfect for those with busy schedules. It perfectly captures the grand strategy of the 1942 Second Edition, requiring players to balance industrial production with military maneuvers across the global stage.
The UI is densely packed but functional once you learn the icons, and the addition of 'Low Luck' dice modes is a godsend for players who find traditional RNG frustrating. While the initial learning curve is steep, the included tutorials and tooltips do a great job of onboarding newcomers. The cross-platform play is the icing on the cake, allowing you to start a game on your PC and finish your turns on your iPad. It’s a must-have for strategy enthusiasts, though players should note it requires a fairly modern device to run smoothly without graphical hiccups.

Success requires coordination between allies. If playing as the Allies, ensure the US and UK are supporting the Soviet front to prevent a German breakthrough. Use the 'War Diary' to review your opponent's moves in detail during your turn to adjust your strategy.
Choose your dice mode carefully. 'Low Luck' uses averages to calculate hits, reducing the impact of extreme RNG, while 'Standard' mode mimics the classic board game experience with fully random rolls.
Yes, you can play solo against AI computer players to practice strategies.
I truly enjoyed playing this when it was a board game, but I almost never finished a game. I was looking forward to the Mobile version because I could actually manage to finish games. I read the reviews and still decided to spend the money on the game is hopes that the glitchy service wouldn’t bother me to much and maybe my money could help them fix the bugs. Alas when I started my first game on my iPhone X I got “the black screen of death”. This happened after the game selection options and right when I was about to start the first Russian turn. Screen went black, not shut off just black. no options, no displays, no matter of random finger tapping the only thing I can do is close the program and re start it. Once I load the app and restart the game after the loading… black again… *sigh. Why I gave this a two star and not a one star is because I can still play it on my iPad but I don’t carry that in my pocket. I can not take a turn while I have a spare moment in my day. Hopefully this glitch will be fixed soon and I can give a much better review for what was/is a great game.
I bought this with a little apprehension given the reviews. So far so good and I have played over a dozen solo games. The only time the game has an error is when I have it open for a very long time and try to play it again. I simply close the app and the game goes right back to where I was so no damage. Overall the game is great and I enjoy it. I am more of a solo player so I would love a better AI. After awhile you learn it’s patterns so you think you are getting better but no way to tell unless you play another person. It would be nice if they made the AI smarter and more unpredictable. Multi-player games could take a very long time so a better AI would allow you to play more while you wait your next turn. Given the latest patch release date I don’t know if the developer is even supporting the game anymore or plans on making any improvements. There is so much potential if they decide to invest in the game. I would definitely be open to buying a one time payment amount if DLC released just like when you buy the actual game. Lastly it’s refreshing to pay for a game once and get all the content. No micro transactions and chasing a meta that you will never catch. While the price may be a little high if you think about all the micro transactions you can make with other games the price is really good.
I really don’t like that I have to be so negative here, I want to rave about how great this is, but I can’t. This game is literally unplayable. Tutorial? Game loads, then freezes on black screen. Single player against computer? Game loads, then freezes on black screen. I’ve tried axis and ally factions, same problem. Only time the game works is in hot seat mode. (I haven’t tried online against other players yet, I’m afraid of eating a slot in someone’s game and just being able to never play my turn due to the above described black screen issue). I know we’ve got Christmas and New Years here, and I understand y’all (the devs) are busy with family and friends, rightfully so, but as soon as the holidays are over, please fix ASAP, I want to rate this game highly, but I just can’t in its current state. Update: I’ve discovered I have 0 issues running the game on my old, 5th gen iPad. The issues I described above persist on my iPhone 13 pro. I followed the recommendation of lowering the performance, and I can at least access all game modes now; however, it’s still a common occurrence to have to force quit the game 3-7 times per PHASE of a turn because it freezes, or goes into a loading cycle that leads no where. As soon as this game is as useful on my iPhone as it is my iPad, I will absolutely bump my review up.
I have been waiting for an online version of this game for over a decade. This game does not disappoint! They have streamlined everything into a sensible online platform and made this great game accessible to everyone who has a phone! Are there glitches?? Yes! They have to fix this up a bit bc it crashes all the time. But it never loses you game or even a round and all you have to do it reload the game and you are right where you were. Annoying? Obsoletely. But give them some time and I’m sure they will figure it out. This is a hasboro wizards of the coast game. They aren’t going to just ignore the problems. Having said all that, if someone from the A&A team reads this PLEASE fix IPC bombing. You can’t go into negative with IPC bombing. You can only get up to the territory value, not into negatives. This is really messing up long games and would be so happy if they could fix it. Thanks for a good game that I know will get better. I waited long enough to have online A&A; I can wait for the bugs to get worked out while conquering the world in the mean time.
I have played the board version decades ago and have played a computer version for years. This app has ridiculous “random” dice generator. It does not randomly roll each individual dice but rather randomly rolls a collective. I routinely experience incredibly improbable dice rolling. Routinely. It really ruins the game because it’s now mostly luck and little strategy because the dice rolling is ridiculous. Statistically - having a one out of three hundred chance of something should happen, well, one out of three hundred times. In this game - a one out of three hundred chance of a particular dice roll combination happens one out of 20 times. In theory - this ridiculous problematic “random” dice rolling should equally affect both players - but it doesn’t seem to from my experience. It’s my experience playing hundreds of games on this app that within 3 full turns of this game - there is at least one ridiculous dice roll outcome that skews the game so much - it’s ruined. When playing the computer - it’s not a problem because the computer strategy is not that sophisticated. But when playing another human - it’s ridiculous that so many games are ruined by statistically highly improbable dice rolling. So many times I am attacking with a dozen or more units - half of them attacking at a 3 or 4, the other half at a 2, and I get two hits, and the defenders having 8 “twos” have 5 or 6 hits - or rather I have a one out of 200 bad roll and my opponent has a one out of 100 good roll. Sure - that combination WILL happen - but should be incredibly rare - like once in 20-30 games - ruining that game, But it tends to happen in half of the games I play - ruining half of them. If you are wanting to play a luck game - then buy this app - it’s great for you. If you are wanting to play a strategy game - then beware. Half your games will be utterly ruined by these non random dice.
The positive: It’s great having an electronic version of the classic board game. I like both the new map layout and the new game pieces. Also, the game is easy enough to play right away if you are familiar with the board game. The negative: It is obvious after a few games played against the AI there is an algorithm at play behind the dice rolling to keep the game close. Battles that should be decisive are skewed to inflict a lot of casualties one way and little the other way that are both unbelievable and inconsistent with probability. An attacking force with 2 fighters which get no hits for 3 rounds while the 3 defending infantry hit multiple times each round? A strategic bombing raid against the AI and its AA gun destroys the attacking bomber while the AI’s bombing raids go an entire game without losing a single bomber? 4 infantry with an artillery gets no hits for 3 rounds? Making it worse is these types of scenarios occur during definitive battles which can decide the game. The other part I don’t like is there are a lot of unnecessary animations/phase change graphics that slow down the game unnecessarily. My advice is don’t waste your money on this game as it will only lead to a lot of frustration.
This has so much potential!! If it didn’t crash so often it would be a solid 5 stars. Bottom line is it crashes a solid 50% of the time as you transition into the battle view. Most of the time you can restart and “more slowly” do the battle, other times you just can’t proceed with the game as the battle conditions itself has some problems. The same game/battle on my laptop is 100% stable (it shares your online profile between phone and computer), so I know it’s just a problem with phones. Developers, if it helps: it was still flaky but much less so with my older iPhone XS Max. When I got the iPhone 13 Pro Max it’s really bad - so it seems like there’s some kind of timing issue happening the faster the processor is. Please please please fix the constant crashes going into battles!! It’s a gorgeous game with awesome ease of use and as I mentioned above, so much potential! It would be my go-to mobile game if it was stable. Thanks in advance!
I love this game. I have not run into any of the issues that are described in previous reviews. It is a classic and I don’t see any other good games on the App Store that really do it better. They are either cheap copies or they try to incorporate stuff from other games like rise of empires where you have to build and upgrade stuff that takes several days at a time just for you to get to play for ten minutes then wait while the next thing upgrades. Even Risk with all the different versions of that game there are, has nothing on the app store. So I keep replaying Axis and Allies all day long at work. I don’t know what’s going on on the development side of things but devs, I would pay money for you to add the version of the game where Italy and China were in the game as their own countries. Germany’s power was diverted a little with Italy being it’s own player so it makes it a little harder for Germany to just pound Russia right off the bat and it adds more strategizing with your team and other ways to try and win. China was controlled by the America player but had more troops and added rules where I think Chinese troops had to stay in China so there was more of an incentive to try and reinforce those troops rather than run away with them before Japan sweeps China in the first two turns. More troops in China also made it harder for Japan to do so. I guess this is the version I used to play with my friends. I don’t know what all there are. I saw in another review someone brought up there are many versions, including one with zombies. And like I said, I don’t see any real competition on the app store so there is money to be made by bringing more of your work to the table. Could make more apps or add it as DLC to this one. I’d buy it. If you added more of this stuff I’d convince my friends to buy it too and I’m sure this is true for other people too so again, money. Take my money devs. Take my friends’ money. Please. We’re adults now and never have the time or place to actually sit down and play the board game. Money.
