Love this alternative to Block Jam
Wed Aug 20 2025 JordyGorgeouson

I first started this type of game with one called Block Jam. A fun game that was very similar, but was clearly revenue-focused rather than customer-focused. You only had 5 lives and were racing under a timer of less than a minute to progress to the next level or have to wait until enough time had passed to continue playing unless you paid for it. I frustratingly paid for an ad-free version and was still annoyed because I just wanted to relax and play a puzzle game. I decided there had to be SOMETHING out there similar enough to the game that was causing feelings of anxiety and went on a Google search. I came across Shape Escape and it was exactly what I needed. Self-paced, unrestricted by a timer or number of “moves..”just a great brain game. They do offer an ad-free version which to me is a little pricey, but I’d rather watch an ad and play leisurely than be highstrung over an iPhone game. Sometimes the app will glitch or not be as responsive as I expect it to, but that could be due to how often and long I’ve played it now. I do wish there was more value/reward tied into winning levels because sometimes ya gotta use a power up and those are obtainable, but I like to use what I win or opt for a quick ad watch to earn it. Overall, this is a great puzzle app that offers mini challenges and daily rewards. I deleted the other app altogether and play this one daily.

Yeah, the no timer thing

Everyone seems to agree that not having a timer is great! I really like these types of block puzzles games but I've always hated the timers. I downloaded this game a few days ago and was super happy with it. And yes, there are a lot of ads but I haven't had the issue of ads covering the gameplay that other people have mentioned. The ads are somewhat annoying but not having a timer balances it out for me. Also the piece movement was really smooth. At least in the beginning. I'm currently on level 157 and now the pieces are moving glitchy. I have to keep reloading the game but smooth moving doesn't last long. I'm still giving it five stars because not having a timer, which I really hate, but I wish they would fix the 'glitchiness' so that the pieces moved smoothly like it did when I first started playing. And, I almost never buy games but I would totally spend money for an ad free version. Especially if I could move the pieces smoothly.

Desperately Needs Better Graphics & Too Easy

It’s great not having a timer, but frankly even their “extreme” levels are easy. I want something as hard as the timed games without the timer! Love not having a timer, but frankly these are easy enough the lack of timer is moot because I don’t need the extra time. Also, the blocks come to full and COMPLETE STOP before exiting the playing field. It is very annoying and slows down play. Technically you can slide a block over those squares while this happens but visually and psychologically it makes you pause. And all the other block games I can kind of “throw” the blocks by doing a hard swipe and this one I have to deliberately guide it square by square. Even half a field square off and it won’t move. This feels like a lack of improvement stuck from 10 years ago when graphics needed more processing time. Is it nice to it have a timer? Sure. Is it a good game to play mindlessly? Kind of. The play can be mindless time-passing which is nice but the catching of the blocks gives me anxiety/annoyance. If I need to concentrate moving the blocks every centimeter I at least want the difficulty to match. But instead the game is easy and movement is difficult.

NO TIMER!!! Thank you!

I do love these puzzles where you move pieces around to try to get things out of the way of each other to clear them from the board. The problem is almost all of them have a timer that is nearly impossible to beat and makes gameplay frustrating and Iser I waste my time watching ads in order to get the right to try and play it again, or I have to spend money I’ve earned in game. Or lose a “life“. As others have said, so many of them advertise their games as having no timers, and then you get into the game and there’s a timer. This game is true to its word. It is *only* about learning the mechanics of moving all of these pieces around. There are many challenges is to overcome, as found in other games, such as frozen blocks, gates that only open when another color has gone through a different gate, so you still need to use the strategy and logic to move everything around. But you never lose. You can restart if you get stuck, but you can keep going as long as it takes to figure out how to get those blocks moved. I highly recommend this game. I usually turn to it after having lost a bunch of lives in other games and I am in a really frustrated mood because I can’t seem to beat the timers. This game relaxes me and lets me just think through the strategies. Thank you for making a game without a timer, this is amazing.

Fun, but not perfect

I mean, the game itself is amazing! I think we are all here because we enjoy these block puzzles but don’t want to be pressured into a time constraint. I absolutely LOVE this game for occupying my hands while I listen to lectures. The races are an added bit of fun :) I also don’t find the ads outrageous. This is a solid and enjoyable game. Now for the cons….the responsiveness of the touch is really bad. It might take me several attempts to “grab” a block to drag it. I’ll also pull my finger off the screen and still see the block I selected as active. It is a minor inconvenience, given that the app is free. But I’ll say, it does get frustrating when you’re in a race and every second counts. I also noticed that my screen gets VERY HOT when playing, and discovered that this app used 45% of my battery life in the last 24 hours (which also explains the 2nd issue I’d been having). So something is clearly not optimizing…. I’ll research ways to combat this, but I’m not a tech person, so if it doesn’t get better, I will end up deleting.

Love the gameplay, but…

This game is exactly the gameplay I want out of a game like this, and the mechanics are solid. I love having no timer and thereby very little pressure, but I do have one major issue: I’m sick of seeing lazily rendered AI art all over the App Store. The way the thumbnail doesn’t exactly make sense or even match the visual style of the game nearly made me decide not to download, and my dismay when I saw the even more nonsensical loading screen and the vista between levels was palpable. I just can’t get away from it. Please, please just spend five minutes in Blender or something…or better yet, hire a real artist. These are BLOCKS. It’s not rocket science. Also, I do have one gripe with the gameplay: the stars. The lack of a timer or any move counter in the levels does take the edge off, but the fact that you’re still given one to three stars on completion sort of adds it back on a little. It doesn’t help that the stars don’t do anything, nor is it clear what metric is measuring your performance—maybe it’s number of moves? Or is there a timer that you can’t see? Regardless, it seems kind of pointless. So yeah. Fine game dragged down by a couple critical issues. 3/5 stars, could be five if these issues were addressed but the AI thing in particular bothers me to no end. (Sorry if it’s not AI, but if it isn’t…uh…pay more attention to how blocks work.)

Almost a winner

Updating my original review since my ads popping up mid game issue has been resolved. I really do enjoy this game, especially since there’s no timer and unlike others, I can play without needing to buy anything. I do wish the ad free version didn’t cost so much. Also, unlike others, I can only play 3-4 levels and then my phone gets very hot so I have to stop. I’d play constantly if that wasn’t an issue! Original review… I was going to give this a great review since it says no timer and actually has no timer. But then the ads started popping up DURING game play. It’s one thing for them to be between levels, but DURING levels is ridiculous. I tried to send a message to app support and it won’t go through. It keeps telling me I need to include my email address, even though I was including my email address.

Good with a few quirks

I love that there is no timer, but I have played long enough now that I am experiencing a lot of frustrating quirks. First, the blocks started moving slowly or not at all. I would have to hold down on one for a bit before I could move it, and sometimes I would touch a block to move and a nearby block would move instead. With no timer, it’s not a huge deal but still annoying. However, lately it has been having me repeat puzzles I e already solved. This is something I dislike immensely and will be the reason I delete the app. I will solve a puzzle, get the credits for it and the little “amazing!” Message and then the very next puzzle will be identical, yet is numbered as the next level. This has now happened to me multiple times. Most recently it did it to me twice in a row! No thank you, I don’t care to repeat the same puzzle over and over. Time to try a different app.
