Minor bug fix.
I think graphics settings should be added just like they had in RE8, I feel the metal fx is a little aggressive and the image comes outs a little too soft and too low res textures, maybe give an update for the tiniest bit of quality boost, but having settings would also future proof the game for later devices, like iPhone 16 or 17, and m3 iPad Pro. RE8 is guna look better as more powerful devices can run more settings, so why lock RE4 down and trap it. Also turn HDR off, I noticed even on PC version last year it’s broken, everything comes off too bright and washed, go SDR, and slide the brightness up a little past the middle, it gives those inky black night scenes and cave scenes, with hdr turned in the opening scene in the forest looked bright and brown, but with it turned off it looked just like it did in the gameplay reveal, dark Black Forest with rays of white moonlight bleeding through the trees
Firstly, thanks apple and RE4 R developers for putting RE on apple devices! I bought this game on day 1 (a few days ago) for my 12.9 IPad Pro (bought RE Village day one as well) and its more than amazing! I have not had any problems with the game through my whole play-through other than 3 very minor pop-ins which is understandable, never had downloading issues like others are commenting nor have i had any overheating even when playing while charging. I see other reviewers discussing controls and it literally says the best way and recommended way to play is by using a controller!! I haven’t experienced any latency in the controller or lip sync either. The only things that were minor inconveniences were the black borders and the lack of graphical customization that RE:Village had but nonetheless I’m just grateful to play RE anywhere I go whether at home in my bed not having to sit up in front of my TV or in my truck. I have not played it yet on my iPhone and I probably won’t but my friend has on his IPhone and he’s on his second play-though with no issues using a controller so maybe other people’s WiFi is the problem idk, but again thank you to apple and RE devs for going all out and flexing them M chip for the fans, Farewell Strangas!
This is more than just a port—it's a flawless technical achievement on mobile. I initially doubted I could genuinely play a game as complex and intense as Resident Evil 4 without a controller, and even worried the iPhone's titanium frame would overheat and become painful. I was completely wrong on both counts. The customization of the on-screen touch controls is phenomenal. Once you spend a few minutes optimizing the layout, the game becomes surprisingly intuitive. I was able to master the aiming, quick turns, and parries entirely with touch, proving that this AAA title is absolutely beatable and deeply immersive without an external gamepad. Furthermore, despite running the game for long sessions, the thermal management of the iPhone 15 Pro Max was perfect. Yes, the titanium frame gets noticeably warm, but the heat never became uncomfortable, painful, or hot enough to trigger the thermal warning. The device stabilized the temperature while maintaining a consistently smooth frame rate. Capcom, you nailed the port, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max is officially a hardcore gaming console. If you were skeptical about the controls, don't be—jump in!
UPDATED NOTE: New update to the game has actually ruined the entire purpose of a game. Not only has Capcom went backwards, but they turned the game into an even less accessible medium due to now requiring an internet connection to START the app. This makes the game rely on unnecessary bandwidth to then lag the game if the internet connection isn’t strong enough. Unbelievable behavior coming from a AAA company. 1 star. Game actually runs, but I’m severely disappointed that the most basic types of graphics settings can’t be adjusted at all. I want to have the control to toggle graphics options so I can optimize the game to my liking. Input lag is very bad for Xbox One/Series X controllers, with a noticeable delay after every button press. There are bugs in which the player can fall into the ground, especially during Ada’s sections in the Krauser section. More patches and optimization fixes to this game need to happen especially for iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, and I hope this port continues to be supported as it should be impossible but with RE Engine magic it’s actually possible. (Will come back to edit this review when these issues are addressed) Device: iPhone 15 Pro
Resident Evil 4 offers a compelling and enticing story that is very entertaining and is fun to play. I would highly recommend buying this game if you are a fan of the survival horror genre. This is a massive upgrade from the original RE4, giving not only better graphics but a better story in general. Some segments and sequences have been significantly changed from the OG RE4 that makes the game more enjoyable to play. An instance of this is the minecart section. In the original you'd be by yourself and have to defend yourself from enemies that jump into the minecart that you are in. In the remake you get a partner to be with during that section and it has a lot more action implemented into it. I really, really do recommend you buy this game if you haven't already. The DLC for the remake is also awesome. I haven't played it yet but I've watched some videos about it and it also is awesome.
3 stars for now, which is a shame. The game itself? Fantastic. It’s everything I loved about the original and more, and I’m having a blast. But, running on a 15 Pro, sometimes the game just… force quits. And before you ask, no, I don’t have any other apps running. I do everything I can to make sure my iPhone is focusing on Resident Evil 4 and nothing else. And yet, crucially, it only seems to quit on me in the middle of boss fights, or after long stretches of hard fights. My solution? Give me more graphics controls. I’m actually really easy to please; my vision isn’t that great and I’m not on a big screen, I’d be perfectly happy reducing quality a little to ensure smooth uninterrupted gameplay. If this keeps happening I’m not going to be able to attempt a Pro S+ run because the game will crash between save points. So disappointing.
When I originally purchased RE4 I had the horrible experience of the game causing a kernel panic randomly, either after only a few minutes or at most 30 minutes after opening the app. A full on kernel panic that causes the Mac to instantly reboot. I suffered through this for awhile attempting to figure out what the issue was, eventually finding out that setting the Metal FX setting to "Quality" caused the kernel panic and if I just downgrade that setting to "Performance" it plays without issue. That was good. But after the recent update ("Minor Fixes" is all the update notes said) I'm able to run the game at "Quality" Metal FX and it plays flawlessly and (even more) beautifully. Now I'm glad i bought this game. It's very nicely done. If you gave up on this game because it was causing kernel panics, come give it a try again!
I beat the RE4 remake on HARDCORE MODE my first run through for playstation 5 when it first came out. I'm playing on HARDCORE mode right now for the IOS port my first run through. This game runs well. I use a backbone one remote and there is no input delay. I am on the iPhone 15 pro. I just wish there wasn't as much as an input delay when mirroring your iphones display to a TV using apples usbC to HDMI adapter and using a playstation remote for example to control the game. runs smooth with HDR enabled. Also, who cares about the downgraded graphics and view distance, textures, etc, the fact this is on a phone is amazing. People weren't complaining when the original resident evil 4 came out and those graphics were like nintendo models, lol. Chapter 7 experiences many lag spikes, please optimize, had to turn off HDR. Still has lag spikes, messes you up from time to time, but it's playable.
