New build to satisfy updated App Store requirements.
Gargoyles is a gritty, atmospheric action-platformer that successfully captures the gothic aesthetic of classic 16-bit titles. As an expert in retro-inspired design, I was impressed by the fluidity of the gargoyle's movement; the climbing and gliding mechanics feel heavy and impactful, which is appropriate for a stone creature. The world-building is dark and evocative, utilizing a shadow-heavy art style that makes every rooftop feel dangerous.
The combat is straightforward but satisfying, focusing on powerful strikes and environmental navigation. While the level design can be challenging—leaning into that 'old school' difficulty—the save-state system on mobile makes it accessible for modern players. It’s a great pick for fans of 'Castlevania' or 'Demon's Crest' who want a shorter, punchy experience on their phone. The sound design, particularly the heavy stone thuds and ambient night sounds, does a lot of work in building a truly immersive gothic world.

The glide isn't just for travel; it's a defensive tool. If you are surrounded by ground enemies, jump and hold the glide button to hover just out of their reach while charging your 'Slam' attack.
You can stick to almost any vertical surface. Use this to find secret paths on the ceilings of the sewer levels, where the most powerful health-upgrades are hidden.
Yes, Gargoyles is fully compatible with MFi and PlayStation/Xbox controllers for a more authentic arcade experience.
. . . I’m probably on the couch, playing this game. It’s been a while since I found one this absorbing! I haven’t beaten it on Normal because it’s kind of hard, though I’m doing better since I started swapping gargoyles around. I especially like seeing what perks my gargoyles have and leveling them up. I’ve always liked tower defense games, and I find the indie art style of this one appealing. The gargoyles are adorable!
This game is a great challenge in Normal mode and still challenging enough to be fun in Easy mode. I love the way scoring is cumulative, so you really have to budget your pixies. The art and sound effects work together to create a lived-in, homespun vibe and the story is well integrated into the game, not just something you read at the beginning and then forget.

Karl Voskuil has officially launched Gargoyles on iOS, letting players dive into a tower defence strategy RPG with gargoyles mixed in.
