Doom and Destiny is a love letter to the 8-bit and 16-bit JRPG era, but with a sharp, self-aware comedic edge that feels entirely modern. The premise of four 'nerds' being pulled into a fantasy world and mistaken for heroes allows for constant 4th-wall breaking and genre parody that kept me laughing throughout the 20-hour main story. It manages to balance the 'silly' (like healing with potato chips) with genuinely deep RPG mechanics.
The combat is a traditional turn-based system that is easy to pick up but surprisingly tactical, especially when you start mixing and matching the 200+ special powers. With 700 locations and over 300 enemies, the sense of scale is impressive for an indie title. The fact that it’s a premium 'one price' game with no ads or in-app purchases is the icing on the cake. It’s a massive, polished adventure that every fan of classic Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger should experience.
20-hour main story + 20 hours of extras
Traditional turn-based combat with 200+ powers
No in-app purchases or third-party ads
Massive world with over 700 locations
Hilarious, self-aware script with 10,000+ lines of dialogue
You can change your party order at any time to apply different bonuses. Put your Barbarian in front to soak up damage while your Wizard prepares high-level spells from the back.
The game has over 100 hidden secrets. Always interact with suspicious walls or lone bushes—some of the best gear in the game is hidden in the most preposterous places.
It is primarily a single-player epic RPG adventure.
Love it! First off, no crashing, for those like me who worry about that. This game is very funny! I'm just a short way in but I've had some really great laughs so far. This is also very well put together. A Final Fantasy meets World of Warcraft but with a better sense of humor. I can tell I'm going to get a lot of hours of great game play out of this. It's not a graphics game. It's a shout out to when games were good! If anything I feel bad that I paid so little for this game. I probably sound like a fake ad comment, but I'm actually just happy I found this gem. It's the one you're looking for. Update, still not done, months later, still love this game and just bought sequel. One downside, if I get a phone call, I lose all unsaved progress. Sometimes it hurts, but I save often.
The game reminds me of old school J-RPGs, but with silly main characters, a neat time traveling theme, and self-aware/ breaking the 4th wall NPC humor. Battles are turned based and items can be interesting such as healing using ‘potato chips’. You can customize the difficulty, window color and save at any time— which is great. The controls took me quite some time to get used to— I’m pretty sure they could have been more streamlined, or if there were an option to be able to edit/ change them I would’ve. I also wish there was a zoom in feature in the game because it can look quite small on the phone. I see that the main characters look worse than most of the other characters in the game— I know it must be on purpose but it’s odd. Despite my gripes about the controls/ main character the game is getting quite enjoyable. It’s worth giving the game a chance if you’re on the fence.
I gotta say, I'm not one to write reviews, but this game deserves one. 5 stars definitely so far. I don't like that there isn't a quick save or anything and I feel like when I go out of the app to check messages or something, I feel like it's going force shut down on me... Like while I'm writing this review! It hasn't yet lately. It has the charm of an NES/SNES RPG and has a lot of fun references. The first one is actually two. They made a lot of fun of my favorite character of all time there lol. The second reference you'll definitely get when you see him if you're a fan of video games. There's also a small treat for you all also right after that. Just remember, "It's dangerous to go alone..."
As a 27 year old man with the heart of a child ,but the responsibility of someone running a local business, I have been searching for a classic turn based RPG. Well this is it! It reminds me of the classics I played when I was a child, but with enough cynicism and humor to keep me interested. I can play for a few minutes here and there during the day, but once I've finished at the shop for the day I can sit down and put an hour or so into it without realizing. This fills a void in the iOS shop that I have been sorely saddened by. Keep these coming, I will gladly pay for more!
Possibly the best 99 cents I ever spent. I love the lack of IAP and classic play. It's a good long game, too. I'm like 8 hours in and feel like there's probably a long way to go. The writing is good and very funny. There are occasional and slight off-color jokes that keep this from totally being kid-friendly, but it's better than a lot of what's out there. For adults, I'd give it more stars if I could. I wish this dev would team up with the Aveyond team to get more wonderful old school style games onto the App Store.
My second child was just born, and although I love watching her sleep, it does get a little bit boring after awhile. This game is the perfect solution. It can be played one handed, there's no real time component, you can save often (which is important because both my children need me frequently) and it's fun. I love the humor, the battles are engaging, and it requires just the right amount of thought from me to keep it fun without thinking too hard. Spend the 99 cents. It's worth it!
I was skeptical at first - although, this RPG is something that reminds me of adventures past, as well as games with a fun factor that undoubtedly kept you playing until the end...similar to 16-bit classics. This game is fully functional, not only as a satire of nostalgic games, but also as a quality RPG. Definitely recommend; and I hope the developers continue to make similar games in the future. Edit: Unfortunately, my saves were wiped due to an update. That’s definitely disappointing.
I really enjoy playing - great old-time RPG that isn't seen much any more. The only problem is the lag - it eventually slows and freezes, then it actually quits. When I open the app again it goes to the main screen and I have to go back to last saved point. Not a big deal in most play (just save often) but longer boss battles get frustrating when I have to keep trying to finish without it crashing. It seems to be related to music loop.
