Crux: The Great Outdoors is a rare gem that manages to capture the technical 'flow' of rock climbing in a way few other games do. Instead of button mashing, it’s about planned movement and weight distribution. You have to think three moves ahead: where will my left hand go so my right foot can reach that small crimp? It’s a puzzle game disguised as a sports simulator.
The 'Great Outdoors' theme is beautifully executed, with serene mountain backdrops that contrast with the intense mental challenge of the climbs. The community level editor is the real standout feature here; there are thousands of player-made routes that range from relaxing scrambles to absolute nightmares. For anyone who loves bouldering or just high-quality logic puzzles, Crux is a must-have.
Realistic bouldering mechanics
Vast community level library
Relaxing outdoor atmosphere
Detailed character customization
Tactical 'move-planning' gameplay
If you find your climber 'stretching' too much, you're likely to fall. Try moving your feet higher first to bring your center of mass closer to the wall before reaching for the next handhold.
Use the editor to place holds. A good route has a 'crux'—a specific section where the player must figure out a difficult sequence of movements to proceed.
While primarily designed for touch, it has excellent controller support which makes the precise foot placements even more satisfying.
I actually climb & I absolutely love this game. It may not be exactly like the real thing but it’s dang close. The “puzzle” within the game is the same on a real life rock climbing wall/outdoor rock. You have to think which hand to move where, and same goes for your feet. I definitely feel as if this game could/will help me with my climbing. Great stuff!
So far so good. Definitely more polished than the amazing original, but I miss having ratings for the climb and so far it’s a lot easier than the predecessor. Still I love it!!! Update: moving to five stars as the difficulty definitely upped. Getting close to 3 stars on every route!
I am a rock climber, and I think this game is super realistic to the real thing. You can customize pads your character and there’s so many different levels. I found out that you can eventually do a dino. I think it’s a really fun game.
I recently got into climbing in real life and I really appreciate the attention to detail here! It’s really fun and challenging. Hope to see a more levels and a level editor soon!
Quirky, repetitive and annoying. Oh well.
