Bass Cat is a brilliant example of how gamification can turn a tedious task—learning to read music—into an addictive challenge. By focusing specifically on the bass clef, it provides a deep-dive that general music apps often miss. The 80 levels are expertly paced, gradually introducing new notes and rhythms in a way that feels like playing a platformer rather than a music lesson.
The collaboration with professional musicians is evident in the accuracy and educational value of the content. I've seen students who were completely discouraged by staff reading suddenly light up when they 'clear' a level in Bass Cat. The 'Challenge Mode' adds a nice layer of replayability, pushing you to recognize notes under pressure. It's an essential tool for any beginning bassist, pianist, or music student who wants to build a rock-solid foundation in sight-reading while having genuine fun.

In the early levels, focus on the 'anchor' notes like Middle C. Once you can find those instantly, use them as a reference point for the notes above and below.
After completing the main levels, jump into Challenge Mode to test your speed. Identifying notes quickly is the key to fluent sight-reading in the real world.
Yes, the developer James Uhart also offers 'Treble Cat' for those learning the upper staff.
I have been using the bass and treble versions of this app in my piano studio. The kids love it, but I wish there was an advanced level that included bass and treble in the same game. It would have much better direct relation to piano than two rows of treble or two rows of bass!
Some of the deeper bass clef notes are a bit too quick.. would appreciate more levels on low low C D E. But a great all around game to brush up on your music reading skills. Please make more! Like how to read chords and stuff would be cool!
Very smart graduated program. You don't even realize how deeply you're learning the notes until you're there. Thank you for this very cool assist.
This is a great game for reviewing bass clef notes. However, most piano methods teach the bass clef starting at the top of the staff and working their way down. I wish there where a way to review just the notes stepping down from middle C.
I love using this game with my piano students, but I would like a version that starts from the top down. That way it matches up with the order of the notes they learn.
Just getting started with this, but it looks promising and is more engaging than rote memorization. It'd be great if there were also an Alto Cat for young violists!
I love this app. I am hoping that as I get further into it that there will be ledger lines.
This app needs better instructions on how to use it.
