Our Expert Score

94/100

Avolteha is a breathtakingly original point-and-click adventure that achieves something rare: it tells a deeply moving story entirely without words. As a critic who values narrative innovation, I was captivated by the world of Avolteha—a planet where water is a scarce commodity harvested from the clouds by giant mushrooms. You play as Paul, an inhabitant who must return to the cloud city to solve a crisis when the water source fails. The game’s commitment to 'no boring texts' is its greatest strength; every interaction and conversation is handled through hand-drawn speech bubbles and visual cues, making it universally accessible across all languages.

The art style is magnificent, featuring richly detailed scenes that look like they were pulled from a high-end illustrated storybook. The 'one-finger zoom' mechanic is a brilliant concession to mobile gaming, allowing you to easily investigate the small details of the environment without the clunkiness typical of the genre. Puzzles are logical and integrated into the world, often requiring you to interact with Paul’s friends for clues. It is a classic adventure game in the truest sense, but with a modern, polished heart that makes it suitable for the whole family. It is, quite simply, a must-play masterpiece of indie game design.

Great graphics!

I would get this just for the art of it.. but there is too much repetition for 5 stars. There needs to be quicker ways to get around!

Fantastic!

Love the game! Got stuck on the mushroom& arrow puzzle for awhile- update with added time was a huge help! Really enjoyed playing. I’m wishing & hoping another adventure is in the works. The detail is incredible, there is so much to look at! Take advantage of the zoom feature and explore each new scene. Well priced and worth purchasing. Not too short, of course any game I love is never long enough. Puzzles vary in difficulty, challenging at times but not overly frustrating. Operations are simple and smooth. To the developer- thank you! I appreciate the work and detail. Easily amongst my favorites in the point & click game category. Can’t say enough good things. Looking forward to what you come up with next!

I want to love this game but playing is tedious

I do love the art style and highly praise the work that went into making this game. There’s likely a lot to love if actually playing the game wasn’t so tedious. Even with the setting to speed up movement (why does there need to be a setting?), the main character isn’t zippy. What makes this less fun is tapping on the world or objects offers no feedback. You have to tap on something twice. Once to actually walk to it. And once to maybe, hopefully interact with it. You have no clue what you can interact with versus is just scenery, either way tapping it produces no results unless you tap a few times and are lucky to hit it exactly correctly. If this can be improved I’m sure the game will be great.

Good premise, not completely intuitive, mediocre ending.

The game idea is great, the idea of having no language, makes it open to more people. But on the i-pad the directions are not always smooth. Lining up items to interact with, clicking on directions to go different ways, some are moving left right up an down, but some you have to move closer to the front of the play area, or closer to the background. For an i-pad, you have to be right on the interactive zone, or your click is not recognized. You also have to be right next to the item you want to interact with. It does take some getting used to. The end is not worth the effort. The game is not really worth the price.

Gorgeous artwork, gameplay confusing

The graphics are fantastic, very creative and thoughtful, however the instructions don’t make sense, and if you don’t do the exact thing you are supposed to do nothing else happens. The physics need to be refined. We wound up accidentally deleting all our progress because the instructions for how to save games locally or to the cloud don’t make sense at all and I was unwilling to start all over again. There is potential here but it wound up being frustrating. Our 7 year old loved the characters but couldn’t get anywhere due to the interface. Keep working on it.

Not impressed

The graphics are nice. But ... The game was not fun. The motions are slow and it takes way too long to wander from place to place. Most of the actions needed are obtuse and require an awful lot of random clicking - even the clue system is obtuse. Each time you open the game you need to go a long intrusuction with instructions every time before being let into the game. I regret getting this.

Could’ve been great….but

Avolteah is a beautiful, interesting little game that is ruined by a player that moves like a snail, puzzles that are timed such that an Olympian couldn’t finish them before, guess what? You have a long, laborious task to go recharge your widget. Items in your inventory aren’t labeled so who knows what the cute little drawings are. The rave reviews for this game have to be from the developers relatives. Not fun.

Absolutely fantastic! Well worth$$$$.....I admit being frustrated at first but the clues that are given really do help! The bad reviews here are unwarranted I feel. This is very much a "thinking game". GREAT JOB. More , please😎.
