Our Expert Score

95/100

This is the definitive version of 2048. As the official release from Gabriele Cirulli, it avoids all the clutter, intrusive ads, and clunky interfaces found in the hundreds of clones on the App Store. The design is minimalist and elegant, focusing entirely on the gameplay. The 'silky-smooth' swiping isn't just marketing speak—it feels significantly more responsive than other versions.

The addition of detailed statistics and an undo button makes this version much more than just a simple puzzle. You can track your progress, analyze your best scores, and even play in a Dark Mode that is much easier on the eyes during late-night sessions. If you are going to play 2048, this is the only version you need.

Please add these ideas to this game

Love the game it’s relaxing but I have some ideas to make it better 1: please add colors to the game once you make it to 4096 the black color gets a little bit boring so make a color scheme please. 2: add different grids to the game like 3x3 and 5x5-8x8 because I’ve got to the point we’re I’ve got so high I can’t get higher because there’s not enough room so add more grids please. 3: please add more then one undo make it five so people can make more progress, and please fix the undo glitch sometimes when I need to undo I Press the button and it doesn’t undo and I have to restart and that’s annoying so please add these to the game Thankyou.

Undo button + swipe sensitivity

Overall, I love this app. Not a lot of iOS apps have the original game’s 10% 4 spawn rate, and the game runs really smoothly. However, I do have two big issues with it. The first is the fact that there is no indication at the game over screen as to whether or not the undo button was used. I’m in a 2048 Discord server where we host tournaments and the rankings are based on the sum of your top legitimate scores, and without being able to see if the undo button was used it is very difficult to see if a score was faked or not, since you can simply toggle the undo off before you die and it will not appear on the game over screen. I feel that it would be better if there was a counter at the game over screen showing how many times the undo button was used over the entire run, regardless of whether or not it is toggled on at the end of the run. My second issue is that I fel that the app is much too sensitive to swipes. I have had this app register a literal tap as a swipe before, even though my finger barely moved at all. This can benefit players who are trying to get a faster time, but I have had games ruined because the app registered a swipe up when there was none. At the very least I think there should be a feature that allows players to adjust the swipe sensitivity to guard against these accidental swipes.

Ads, sensitivity, and general corruption

I’m sure you’ve all heard this if you read the other reviews but I just CAN’T stand the ads. They appear literally every game and you can’t X it out. And with the amount of sensitivity the screen has, you’re bound to blow the game. I swiped right and it went down, and everyone knows that’s the worst thing to do. Furthermore, when I was told I could change sensitivity in the menu, there wasn’t one. I’m not sure if an iPhone 6s is too old to access the update, but I can’t believe that just accidentally touching the screen with a bit of skin can count as a swipe. The game itself was glitchy and stopped working entirely for a whole 2 minutes in the first 10 minutes I got it. In the first round, I made it to 256 with 6 misinputs. The only thing stopping me from giving this 1 star is because I do like the game itself and don’t really find it boring yet. I’m deleting this app, it only lasted 15 minutes(including the time it took me to write this review). In short, I’m extremely disappointed and recommend an online version with no ads. There are a few that are websites and don’t have ads. Hope this helps!

Ads Have Made my Favorite App Unusable
Mon Feb 28 2022 Bappreviewer

Edit: recv’d response from dev that all ads have x’s in corners. this simply isn’t the case. some ads started coming with app store buttons to close instead of the x’s, and increasingly ads started showing up with none. when i couldn’t find any, i even blindly tapped the corners where they usually are. clicking into the ad and returning with < 2048 in upper left still reveals no x. on iphone 12 pro max; 15.3.1. i played the game many times a day, trying to keep my 2048 tile time under 10min, and 4096 under 22min. i’m pretty sure i’m not being stumped by the ad close button between games, but i could be wrong…i was getting ad server errors intermittently as well with something like “index?foo&bar could not be displayed properly.” ///////// The ads have ruined this app. The game itself is a commodity by now, so there are lots of different apps with the same game. The ads they’re serving between games take the app hostsge indefinitely. i’m uninstalling it and using one of the alternatives. it’s just not worth the pain of having to kill the app between each game when there are so many alternatives available.

Fun, addictive, glitchy

I managed to get to 2048 after a few hours, total, of play. It’s hard to get to the level after that. One issue I kept experiencing was that the panel was super sensitive, so I often had the tiles move up/down instead of to the side. Anyone who understands the critical strategy of keeping the highest value tile in the corner knows this can be a tragedy. Then I found the “undo” button occasionally stopped working (maybe I used it too often), so when an error like that occurred, I would not be able to fix it. Several high scoring games were blown by the sensitivity of the playing board and inability to undo. It takes a while to build up values—such a time sink, only to see all the work blown by a single fumble. I’ve deleted the app—I’ve figured out how to win but am thwarted, which makes the game pointless.

Poor swipe detection
Fri Oct 20 2017 Sparrowhawk996

A slightly diagonal swipe can get interpreted as a different direction than you meant. The game needs to wait for a little bit longer swipe before moving the tiles. I've played several 2048 games, and this is the only one that misinterpreted swipes. I played this game once, up to 256, and it had already misinterpreted 2 swipes. Forget it, that's way too twitchy swipe detection for this kind of game. UPDATE: the developer says I was touching the screen with multiple fingers, and to turn off the “extended swipe” feature. But I wasn’t touching with multiple fingers. I reinstalled the game and turned off extended swipe. The game still interprets even super-slight movement of my ONE fingertip as a full swipe. It’s still way too sensitive and interprets touch input before there’s enough input to accurately identify the overall direction of the swipe. I’m using an iPhone 6.

Cash Grab with Ads

I was disappointed to find the original version of the game has been corrupted by the publisher with ads, and an expensive ad removal option. Because this game is not original work, the creator did not want it monetized. When ads were originally introduced, the fee was also considerably less. I didn’t mind paying that time, but now the ads are back and for much more money. This is just a greedy publisher trying to cash in. If you’re looking for a replacement: try the game that inspired 2048, “Threes”. Update following the developer’s comment: If the confusion stems from use of the word “original” in the first sentence, I’m referring to this version as the original 2048. If you mean generally: there’s no originality to the game itself. The game is an intentional clone of Threes according to the creator, who made the game in a weekend as an exercise. The creator also stated this game should never draw profit because it is not original work. That information is available many places online. I did reach out via email before this review, and was brushed off by the developer.

Ads ruin the experience
Tue Aug 18 2020 Why pay?

The game was great. I liked the colors on this better than others. Previously, the ads were bearable. They claim that the update didn’t add more ads — maybe they think that’s true, but the ads that existed before generally to upgrade the game. Occasionally there would be ads for other games. Now, there’s ads for all kinds of annoying stuff — one even tried to get me to turn on my location for 2048. The location of the close ad button has changed. It used to be in the upper right corner consistently. Now, the close area unpredictability changes. More often than not, the click target is small. Both of these issues leads to accessibility clicking the ad. The trickery is unacceptable. I’ve deleted this game from my phone
