Wacky Wheels HD is a delightful blast from the past for anyone who grew up playing the original MS-DOS kart racer. It successfully captures the 'Mode 7' aesthetic of the 90s while cleaning up the visuals for modern HD displays. The roster of wild animals, including classics like Sultan the elephant and newcomers like Hari the grizzly, brings a lot of personality to the tracks. The gameplay is pure arcade fun—it’s less about realistic physics and more about power-ups, tight turns, and chucking hedgehogs at your rivals.
While the game is a great piece of nostalgia, it does feel a bit dated compared to modern kart racers like Mario Kart Tour. The controls can be a bit bunched up on smaller screens, and the lack of a modern tutorial might leave new players confused about some of the older mechanics. However, for those looking for a faithful reboot of a cult classic, complete with a remastered version of that iconic soundtrack, Wacky Wheels HD delivers exactly what it promises. It’s a quirky, ferocious, and fun return to the track.
Official reboot of the classic MS-DOS game
16 themed race tracks and 4 Duck Hunt arenas
Remastered original soundtrack
HD cartoon 'Mode 7' art style
Full MFi gamepad and controller support
Collect hedgehogs from the track to use as projectiles. Timing your throw is crucial; wait until you are on a straightaway to ensure you hit the animal racer directly in front of you.
In Duck Hunt mode, the goal isn't racing but combat. Use the unique arenas to find and 'tag' more ducks than your opponents within the time limit.
It is an all-new game built from the ground up to be a faithful HD reboot of the original Wacky Wheels.
This needs a few improvements, to make it truly an enjoyable experience on iPad. First of all, instructions for players that haven’t used the game in YEARS, would be nice. Secondly, why doesn’t this game have the option to use the controls on my attached keyboard (or even recognize that I have a keyboard)?? Thirdly, if I am playing it without my keyboard (as it seems I have to, currently), it would be a lot easier if the right and left arrows were on the corresponding corners of the screen, instead of bunched up at the left corner. Especially since I am not left-handed!!
Reminds me of old school Mario Kart!
Game won’t start after last update. It just freezes and closes.
