Unboxing the Cryptic Killer is a masterclass in cooperative puzzle design. It takes the concept of an 'escape room' and splits it across two devices, forcing players to communicate constantly to solve intricate, narrative-driven riddles. The art style is a gritty, comic-book noir that perfectly suits the 'detective' theme, making the pursuit of the Cryptic Killer feel urgent and atmospheric.
What truly sets this game apart is the asymmetrical gameplay. You and your partner see different screens, meaning one person has the key while the other has the lock. This 'co-op only' requirement eliminates the possibility of one player dominating the experience; both are equally essential. The puzzles are clever, often requiring lateral thinking and physical notes to solve. It is one of the most engaging social gaming experiences available on mobile, provided you have a partner and a voice connection. It's a brilliant, brain-teasing ride from start to finish.
Mandatory 2-player cooperative gameplay
Stunning hand-drawn comic book art
Intricate, asymmetrical puzzles
Engaging detective noir narrative
Cross-platform play support
Describe everything you see on your screen to your partner. Often, a symbol on your side is the missing piece to a code on theirs.
The game requires two players on two separate devices. You must be able to talk to each other (in person or via voice call) to progress.
No, this is a dedicated co-op game that requires two players on separate devices to function.
I play lots of escape room apps both solo and co-op and this is easily one of the best! It was definitely challenging but in the best way. No hints needed, just thought and time. Everything felt totally logical. I cannot recommend this game enough. It has set a high bar for future games I play. I wish they made more games. I would have paid triple for this game and still felt like I got a great value. Thanks for making an amazing game!
it was a bit short but very very fun. you have to communicate with your partner a ton in order to make it work. definitely good to build teamwork. puzzles were just challenging enough. would definitely recommend!
The production quality of this game is much higher than those found for cheaper. $10 is great value for the hours of fun you will get.
The game was too short for both users to have to pay the $5 on their own devices. The design and difficulty was great would love more like it, didn’t quite need the storyline just like the advanced puzzles and the ease of the hints.
The game was really well made specially since it was a small team. The story was engaging but the ending left a lot to be desired. Overall for a game you’re really only gonna play once the price tag was a little high considering both players have to purchase the game separately(the free prequel was better).
Although it was a short game, the puzzles were fun and challenging took us about 2 hours to complete would def recommend
Me and my fiancé had a great time playing this. Super cool we can play it on steam or on an iPhone and cross play. The end was super stressful lol, but we had a test time.
Super great! Loved all the puzzle details, I wish the clues were more reactive to where we are in the game.
