Our Expert Score

83/100

The Startup: Interactive Game is a fascinating hybrid of a business simulator and a 'choose-your-own-adventure' novel. It captures the high-stakes, high-stress atmosphere of Silicon Valley perfectly. You aren't just looking at spreadsheets; you're making pivotal moral and financial choices that steer the direction of your company.

The episodic nature of the game makes it very digestible. You recruit a team, hunt for venture capital, and deal with the inevitable drama that comes with a growing business. The writing is sharp and realistic, often reflecting actual business challenges like real estate decisions and market timing. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a CEO, this is an excellent and engaging way to find out.

Hard to budget
Thu Aug 04 2022 Joseph Armstrong7

Starting out, we have no plan or expectations of what everything will cost. So basically, all these costs are thrown at the player and eventually we have to go in this “survival mode” because we had no references spending our money earlier. Effectively, starting out feels like a paywall. The ads are a lot but they don’t make the game unplayable if you don’t mind them. I don’t know exactly what’s going on but I think the free players would generate much more money if they were able to play more and budgeting would be easier, like if there was some way for us to know our next decisions when we start out so we play the game and give the developers more money. I also think (from my personal take) that people buy things like premium or no-ads because they enjoy the game and want to play it long-term rather than feeling like they need to. (Since that would feel like a frustrating cash-grab) and that we see the games that don’t understand this at all unplayable. It’s flustering because while making money it has to be understood how that will not get in the way of the experience. (Those empire games out there are great examples.) this is all the negative aspects that would probably need to be solved before the game would be enjoyable to the players and generate more money for the developers. Summary: It’s hard to budget and plan early on so we blow our money starting out and run out of money, making the game difficult to play and stay playing. We also feel like we feel like these passes are forced rather than it being our decisions.

Not worth it

I run a startup. This game is good in theory, and obviously interesting: but not in practice. Like the other review mentions there is too much focus on the user paying $ too early. I’m sure their churn is high because of this. For example, I hired the best designer available then was required to pay at least $7000 to design an in-house logo that could be made in Word. $30k in web hosting pre-launch, when every startup can easily get $100k plus in hosting credits from AWS, Google, and Azure. IMO they should let the user get further into the game where they are invested in their startup versus paywalls very few minutes. No mental investment in my startups growth = churn within 30 minutes. Also it just wasn’t fun and nothing like how an actual startup makes decisions based on the $200k of angel funding the game starts you with. It says the only focus is on building a product MVP yet forces you to invest in marketing campaigns before the product is built. Doesn’t make sense, not worth it. I’m ok with paying for games, but this one doesn’t give you enough time with the game before bombarding you with paywalls.

Horrible

I saw the ad just like everyone else and thought this would be an interesting and fun game where you can try to build a business from scratch. But it’s far from that, once you get into the game there’s so much reading to get a storyline in. It’s paragraph after paragraph, you never really get to make free decisions either, some npc tells you that you need to make company choices and gives you THREE options that change the entire company, and if you choose the “wrong” one he’ll tell you not to make the mistake again. On top of that my company didn’t even make barley any money at all since I started so once you run out of money after they force you spend it all on office buildings, logos, employees, you either have to wait hours for your employees to complete tasks or you have to end up buying money or a subscription which is $5 dollars a WEEK which includes not having to wait for tasks and the full storyline, so yeah you don’t even get to know the full storyline, the people who developed this game clearly didn’t care about the consumer playing, my guess is they made the game a horrible storyline for every player to go through so that the game is basically the same for everyone and they don’t have to worry about coding the game to let players make moves freely. Then the get to sit down and wait for people to buy the subscription or money so they can get their paychecks. You can definitely find a better game then this one.

Absolutely pathetic excuse for a game

This is the first and only review I’ve written. This game is created by scum that are only interested in your money. I have no issues with buying games or spending money on in game purchases whatsoever. I actually think that more games should cost money due to the amount of work put in some of them. But this game is a joke. Not even 5 minutes into the game you begin a task where you team is “building something” and it is a 45 minute wait time so it automatically takes you to a screen to show you the options to purchase the premium version for either 5 dollars a week or 40 dollars a year (obviously trying to get you to spend 40). Every single building task or waiting task is 10 minutes to an hour, and they are very frequent. Oh what’s that? You accidentally clicked the wrong selection? Game over, start from the beginning, because the selection goes through as soon as it’s touched. I decided to spend 5 dollars just to see how much farther it would take me. The full game takes probably 20 minutes to beat and you don’t even get to see how well your business does on launch day, because the game ends on launch day. Don’t waste your money on this garbage. The absolute worst use of 5 dollars in my life.

Unplayable

You’re probably like me. You saw an advertisement, though that the game looked interesting, and hoped that it would live up to your expectations. Sadly, that’s just not the reality. The reality is that the game is truly unplayable unless you spend money on the game. Basically how it works, the entire game is based around money. If you overspend (the game money), you either have to restart from the beginning or you have to buy a subscription for the game. If you don’t spend enough money, you are forced to wait hours for you ‘team’ to complete tasks. Or you, can just spend money on the game and not have to wait. The reality is that the game is paywall after paywall, pressuring you to purchase a subscription. And it’s not cheap, $5 a week (roughly $260 a year), or get this, $40 annually. The developers know that you’re not going to spend long that a few weeks/months on this game, so they pressure you to make a smaller annual purchase rather than pay the full amount weekly. In my opinion, the developers are money-hungry animals that do not care about the game or the consumer, but rather on their paycheck.

Pay walls and full screen Ads
Thu Sep 16 2021 panther2673

From an advertisement of the game it looked really interesting and i looked forward to playing it. Some months ago or last year i downloaded it to then quickly delete it 10 mins later, due to immense pay walls with every click. I recently noticed they had updated the game quite a few times so i thought why not. Not gonna lie i doubled my play time so bravo, i suppose. A LOT OF DIALOGUE just for me to press “continue” and then a full screen ad with lewd females pop up?? Then i press continue on the next set of dialogue and BOOM.. another full screen ad. After going through about 5 ads i finally reached a pay wall. Either wait the 1 hour (or longer) to then continue through ads and more pay walls, or pay the ridiculous amount they charge to practically do NOTHING. I’d expect a game to try and pull a player in and make the game intriguing and cool but its so boring and fills me with rage each ad. The concept is great, the issue is the developers who are begging for money.

Misled

I feel I was misled into downloading this game and ultimately purchasing the subscription. I downloaded it from an add on Facebook that essentially made it look like this was a multilayered game where you start at the bottom and can if you make the right choices, ultimately build an empire. The actual add on Facebook was of the player deciding on what type of sports team to purchase. That is no where in this game. I played through once without a subscription, and after my soft launch the game basically ended. I decided to subscribe because it promised that it would include the entire storyline. I then played through again, and except for a few questions I didn’t have to answer the first time and a few extra decisions the game ended at exactly the same place. I feel like I was bait and switched into purchasing a subscription and plan on contacting the company for a refund. It’s a great concept for a game but after you subscribe you can essentially finish it in an hour.

Garbage - Negative Stars

This game is trash. It’s an in your face pay wall with ads. The price to skip time waiting is ridiculous and if you make the “wrong” decisions you just run out of money and have to start over. I tried restarting the game going the cheapest way since even the middle of the road way makes you go broke unless you (you guessed it) PAY to add more money into your account. They even guilt trip you with the “advisor” saying things like, “That may not be a good decision,” or “Your team didn’t like that you couldn’t spend $70k on a launch party when they only give you $200k to start. Even had a dumb scenario about the servers catching fire during a test run because you cheaped out on the servers. So dumb. And to top it off I “finished the first chapter” by getting the app to launch and the game just flat out crashed and wouldn’t let me get past it. This game is terrible, a cash grab for the devs, and a waste of time. This game should be banned from the App Store it’s that bad. Total scam.
