Rhythm Cat 2 is an excellent follow-up that manages to be both a fun game and a genuine educational tool. It takes the stress out of learning music theory by gamifying rhythm notation. The progression is very well-paced; it starts with simple quarter notes and gradually introduces more complex patterns and syncopation. The inclusion of classical tracks from composers like Bach and Chopin is a brilliant touch, as it helps players connect the dots between the 'game' and real-world music.
The UI is friendly and unintimidating, making it perfect for kids, but the later levels are challenging enough to benefit adult beginners as well. It’s one of the few educational apps that doesn't feel like 'homework.' Whether you're a budding musician or just looking for a solid rhythm game, Rhythm Cat 2 hits all the right notes.
60 progressively challenging levels
30 songs including Bach, Chopin, and originals
Educational content designed by professionals
Simple, kid-friendly game interface
Develops real-world music reading skills
No prior music knowledge required
Each level presents a musical staff with rhythm notes. As the music plays, a ball bounces over the notes. You must tap the button on the screen exactly when the ball hits the note. Accuracy earns you stars and unlocks the next level with more complex time signatures.
The game starts with basic 4/4 time and quarter notes. As you advance, it introduces rests, eighth notes, and tied notes. The background music evolves from simple beats to full classical arrangements, requiring the player to maintain focus on the rhythm despite melodic distractions.
Yes, although the developer suggests trying 'Rhythm Cat Lite' first if you are totally new to music.
I’m a musician and an educator. I think this is an excellent tool. My children are now learning instruments, and I just got it for them. They really enjoy it so far. There is some room for improvement. The first level has quarter notes and eighth notes. By the third or fourth level there are sixteenth notes. For someone who has been a musician for a while, it’s fine, but for beginners, that’s a very quick progression. From what I’ve seen, this would be perfect for a student who has been learning for a while already or can get some basic guidance from a musician. It doesn't really teach the rhythms, but you do get instant feedback. I’d like to see an easier progression in the beginning and some assistance with learning. Rhythm instruction is closely related to language instruction. I wonder if a few small adjustments would make this a valid tool to improve reading readiness and reading skills, especially for those with dyslexia....I was just working on a literature review on this topic. You’ll have to get in touch if you want additional consultation.
This rhythm app is the best. I am speaking as a piano teacher and as a piano player. The rhythms are a little too hard for my beginner students but great once students are past the beginner stage. Even an advanced player can be tripped up. The game play is smooth and the music is very pleasant to listen to. Many well know classical pieces are used. They also use original music. I wish they would publish sheet music for the original songs. Or perhaps a list of the names of the songs for each level along with the composer. Please make more. I know I would happily pay for additional songs.
I love the concept, but couldn’t get the dotted eighth with a sixteenth note rhythm to work. As a result, scoring was off. I can still use it with my students, but can’t recommend they purchase it for home use. Also, where’s the outline that shows which note values are in each level? That’s really helpful in RC1. Update: I was using speaker. There was just enough lag time to mess it up. Using iPad speaker, we’re back in business! Still want the table of contents, though!
I am a music teacher and this gets my students to read music very quickly as I help count-sing. I even play it for fun!!
I’m a piano teacher, and I enjoy using the app to let my students have fun playing the rhythm game. However, I wish you could provide the “map” showing the elements contained in each song. I do see this function in the original “Rhythm Cat”, but not in this App. This function is extremely helpful for a teacher to choose an appropriate song for the student to practice.
As someone who really wants to learn more about music this is an awesome gamified way to learn! I had a total blast and learned a lot on the way, please please please make another one
I use these in teaching piano. It is challenging and fun! I’m so please with all the Rhythm Cat apps. The note apps are excellent too! Thank you for helping teachers keep it interesting for students! 💕
It looks like a course, because each app released from LMuse becomes better and more difficult but absolutely feasible. Universal because it does not need a single word. Beautifully ludic. Beautiful songs. I’m learning music with so much fun. ❤️ Congratulations to the Developers! 👏👏👏 Thank you so much. *Waiting for the Rhythm Cat 3... 😃
