Power Grid is a digital strategy game where players compete to supply the most cities with power. You must manage a limited budget to outbid opponents for the best power plants, purchase raw materials like coal, oil, and uranium, and strategically expand your network across the map. The game features the iconic 'catch-up' mechanic where the leader is penalized by paying more for resources, ensuring every match remains competitive until the very last turn.

Our Expert Score

85/100

As a purist of German-style board games, seeing Power Grid on mobile was a treat. The adaptation captures the cutthroat nature of the auction phase perfectly. You really feel the squeeze when fuel prices skyrocket because your opponents cornered the coal market. It’s a game of razor-thin margins, and the app manages the complex math of city connections and resource costs flawlessly.

The UI is a bit dense, which is expected for a port of a heavy strategy board game, but once you learn where the resource market and power plant info are, it becomes second nature. The AI is surprisingly competent, providing a legitimate challenge even for experienced players. It’s a fantastic way to play a 2-hour board game in 20 minutes.

Needs bugs fixed

I really want to give this app five stars because Power Grid is one of the best board games out there. However, there’s alot of bugs that need to be worked out. First and foremost, you can’t resume a saved local game. Like at all. The option just isn’t there. So you have to play all the way through or forget about it. Same with editing your local profile. Whatever name you choose at first creation you’re stick with. It’ll crash randomly on starting a game sometimes, but that’s not the end of the world Of course, there’s alot more maps that need to be included but I’m sure that will come down the road. I hope. The interface is a bit unintuitive to start but I got used to it after a while. So overall, a decent app with great source material that needs to get the bugs ironed out.

Superlatively disappointing
Thu Jan 04 2024 Just a tease

I have hundreds of board games, and have loved this game in print for years. Waiting for this utter disappointment is confusing. I hope it updates to something coming close to playable, but since they already have my money, I doubt this will happen. Non-intuitive interface, lack of guidance on how to use the app (let alone a useful tutorial on the game itself), and middling graphics … well, at least it’s expensive. I look forward to being able to upgrade this score, but am not optimistic. This could be a stellar title, though … the source material is excellent!

I love it!

Tons of maps included. Different AI levels. Online play. It is exactly true to the board game but plays much faster. GUI that you arrange and control. Love it. Was worried I wouldn’t like it from the overly picky reviews, but I would choose this over paying for the actual board game (which I also own though no one wants to spend two hours playing) every day. Well done! Kraft were inspired music is brilliant too!

Endless Bugs

- Refactor the movable mini-window UI or replace it. It's just too buggy and requires a force restart every game. - Automatic next action "clipboard" is a nice idea but constantly changing windows turns out to be much more work than a fixed UI would be. More efficient to move one map instead of 4 little windows that reappear in different spots every round. - BeNeLux 5th ecoplant "extended market" doesn't work - Blocks PiP and Music player

Bugs are fixed.

So far I’m really liking this. I came in as an experienced Powergrid player. I can’t tell you how someone new to the game would fare….but veterans should like it. Stable. Good AI. True to the game. One of the better Board Game ports. The interface seemed dreadful at first but after a couple games I’m accustomed. Playing a full 6 player game of Powergrid in 30 minutes sure feels odd though. I get to try a ton of crazy strategies though!

Amazing

Never have I seen a power grid game go so fast! Took me a little bit to get used to the interface, but now games go fast and smooth. Very fun. I imagine it might be tough for someone that doesn’t already understand the gameplay… but if you play the physical game… this is a fun addition to play remotely with friends.

Worst UI Implementation

The “windowed” UI is probably the worst user interface I’ve encountered in an iOS app. It might function better on a desktop but I find even that hard to believe. Every choice made is counterintuitive to the degree that I wonder if this game is some sort of artistic statement or performance art or an intentional choice made to spite Friedman Friese.

Worst designed app I’ve ever used

So buggy. Terrible interface. Doesn’t work half the time and it’s so hard to navigate and understand. Total waste of money. Much easier and less frustrating to play the actual game in real life than to waste time and money on this piece of garbage app.
