Piano Notes is a focused and effective educational tool for anyone looking to bridge the gap between 'playing by ear' and actually reading music. It avoids the fluff of typical rhythm games and gets straight to the point: identifying notes on a staff quickly. The interface is clean and mirrors a real piano keyboard, which helps with the mental translation from page to instrument.
What I appreciated most was the tiered difficulty. It starts with simple natural notes in the treble clef and slowly introduces bass clef, sharps, and flats. The feedback is instant, which is crucial for building the 'muscle memory' of the eyes. While it’s more of a trainer than a game, the high-score system provides enough incentive to keep practicing until note-reading becomes second nature.

Choose between Treble or Bass clef mode. When a note appears on the staff, tap the corresponding key on the piano keyboard below. Try to maintain a streak to increase your score and accuracy rating.
Once you are comfortable with the notes, enter the 'Timed Mode' to see how many notes you can correctly identify in 60 seconds. This builds the speed necessary for real-world sheet music reading.
Yes, it starts with the most basic notes and includes an 'Identify' mode to help you learn the keys before you start the drills.
It’s very good. Some documentation would be helpful. How to play is obvious. How play is scored, specifically how to earn the next star in a level, not so much. Patterns are limited. Additional levels with more accidentals and more key signatures would have been useful and extended play. Doesn’t seem like it would have taken much more effort. Ability to select levels by key signature would be useful, e.g., if I wanted to focus on Db Major.
I’m returning to piano after a long hiatus. I was an intermediate level player, but after 20 years I’ve forgotten many ledger notes. This is a great way to resurrect and reinforce note identification!
Extremely helpful with practicing sight reading. It’s perfect for anyone who wants some extra practice with reading notes.
I have learned a lot and enjoy the timed program
This is the sister app to the blue outlined one. The blue is beginner and this red one is advanced. They should really be labeled as such. The blue one is excellent, includes instructions and appropriate feedback. This red one has lots of levels that I can assume are helpful for advanced music reading - but there is no instruction anywhere in the app.
I wanted to brush up on my music theory and this is a great place to start!
A great app for me, everything I wanted in practicing the notes.
Thought this app was going to help me learn to read music! No instructions at all! And you have to hit random keys and that makes a sound. Does nothing to help you figure out what the notes mean.
