ParaglidingXC V2 is a niche tool that happens to be a very engaging 'game' for aviation enthusiasts. It's less about high scores and more about the technical mastery of thermal flying and cross-country navigation. The physics engine is impressively detailed, simulating lift, sink, and wind drift with surprising accuracy for a mobile app.
While the learning curve is steep—it's practically a flight manual in app form—the satisfaction of catching a thermal and climbing to the cloud base is immense. It's not a 'casual' game by any means, but for those interested in the sport of paragliding, it provides a realistic and portable way to practice flight theory and terrain reading.
Realistic thermal physics
Variometer audio feedback
Real-world terrain data
Advanced flight instrumentation
Watch for birds or changes in the variometer pitch. Thermals usually trigger off sun-facing slopes or dark terrain. Circle tightly to stay in the 'core' of the lift.
Always have a landing zone in sight. Manage your 'Glide Ratio' to ensure that even if you don't find another thermal, you have enough altitude to reach a safe field.
It is a great tool for understanding flight theory and XC strategy, but it should only be used as a supplement to professional in-person instruction.
The app could be a bit more intuitive, but overall it is interesting challenge. I assumed the timer would reset when reaching the various waypoints, so it took awhile to figurer out I had to restart and achieve the first leg sooner. However, I eventually made it. Also, the virtual instructor does not work well unless you use it from the start of the various courses.
It’s a challenging app, but could be a more intuitive. For example, when reaching an interim gate, the time is cumulative, it does not restart the clock.
Marc Stachel is the guy behind Paragliding XC, the highly addictive paragliding app that's on the keenest XC hounds' iPhones this season.
