Our Expert Score

90/100

Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is essentially a Studio Ghibli film brought to life in an MMORPG. The art style is breathtaking, with the Unreal 4 Engine perfectly capturing the whimsical, hand-drawn look of the series. While the 'auto-play' features might put off some hardcore players, the world is so dense with charm—from the music by Joe Hisaishi to the adorable 'Familiars' you collect—that it’s easy to get lost in.

The Kingdom system is one of the better implementations of social play I've seen in mobile RPGs. Rebuilding a fallen nation with friends feels meaningful, and the addition of a personal farm adds a cozy, 'Stardew-esque' loop to the epic adventure. It’s a high-budget, polished experience that successfully blends traditional RPG combat with lifestyle simulation in a way that feels uniquely Ni no Kuni.

Favorite Game of the Year!!!

I was pre-registered for the game and played a few days after release - this game is amazing. Leveling up your rank and stats is very easy and the story is super interesting so far. I love all of the side quests and missions - not to mention the amazing game design, beautiful scenery and intruiging npcs as well as adorable familiars / mounts. Although the selection of clothes and accesories you can customize your character with are confined to a handful of different outfits and hats, etc, right now (which was expected since the game just released), I really like all of them and dying stuff different colors to match is really pleasing. The gacha aspect of the game is enjoyable and I like how clothing was included. The only subject that I was a little dissapointed by was the combat. Dont get me wrong its fun and I like the animations and skills - as well as the different weapon types/ starter characters you can choose from, But I wish we could dodge and move around a little more instead of just normaly standing in one spot (unless your fighting a boss.) I wasn't supperr bothered by this as I am a final fantasy xiv player. At At first I was also a little annoyed by the auto running / fighting feature but once I got used to it I came to actually really like it. When I dont want to sit back and relax while I ride my cat mount to a main story quest, I just turn off the auto run feature and explore on my way there. When fighting I can still push the attack skills to ignore the auto feature and there might even be a way to turn it off during fighting which I havent discovered yet. I am only level 21 which I got to with ease in only a few days. I played for three hours straight the first day I began playing because I was so glued to the story!! 100% recommend downloding.

Fun Game but I am dropping it.

I liked Studio Ghibli’s movie “No ni Kuni” so I wanted to try this game. It’s a very imaginative world like the movie and fun to play. NetMarble made the game accessible for all ages by making an open world on training wheels. Yet, the training wheels are tightened with a torch wrench. NetMarble has not found a good balance of auto-play for new players and letting experienced players play on their own. While you can turn off the auto-fight function in settings, I noticed the game still wanted to fight for me on upgrade levels, like the labyrinth. It should not be that complicated. NetMarble is very generous with upgrade materials for weapons and armor and makes the process fairly easy to understand. However, your items bag fills up very fast, so half your time on the game is spent clearing space for needed items and upgrade materials whether you buy more room in the bag with gems or not. I am dropping the game not because I had to wait in line to play which was bad enough. No, it’s because the game always shuts down when I am upgrading weapons and armor as if I’m not playing. If this game came out a few years earlier, I would have absolutely loved it. However, after playing an open world game like Genshin Impact, Ni no Kuni feels antiquated. This would be a good console or PC game. It is not a good game for a phone/tablet. I played until level 49 and found little reason to spend any more time or money.

Game has a lot of potential

This game is beautiful and has sooo much potential. Character design, style and fighting animation are a few of the things this game exceeds at. However, there is a lot of room for improvement. First, the game is filled with bots. It doesn’t matter which server you’re on, you’ll see them everywhere. While the bots do not necessarily ruin gameplay experience (you can avoid them and there is no competition for monsters), they affect the server. Queues can be 100s of people long with no other option than to wait or pay IRL money to fast pass. Which leads me to my next item: this is a game where if you have the money, you will be atop the Rankings. Skill and time do not necessarily matter in this game. It is entirely computer led and, if you wanted, you could probably do every quest without even having to touch the screen more than a few times. It comes off as a money ploy to make profit with a total disregard for dedicated players. You can buy weapons, armor, buffs, pets, etc etc… I definitely see the point of introducing money as there needs to be a profit. It’s a business, duh. But I think that if Netmarble wants a player base with longevity, they should look into over avenues to gain money. Some people love being whales (ppl who spend a ton of irl money in games) and that’s great. But most people do not have the money to spend. And you can easily spend 100s of dollars on this. I definitely recommend this game as it is addictive. But be warned, there are definite roadblocks once you get past the early game. And it requires grinding to keep up with those who can dish out a lot of money.

Off brand copy of Genshin Impact

If you want a better “open world” game, then download genshin impact. This game is almost a exact copy of it, the opening, the mechanics.. any of you genshin impact players know what im talking about. I literally pre ordered the game expecting something way better, but as i was playing way too many things remind me of genshin. Maybe this game was inspired by it, just like genshin impact was inspired by the game Zelda breath of the wild but its just way too similar to me. Not only this, the game is really confusing, i think theres way too many buttons and things to upgrade im just lost in the game. If you have auto on, you can legitimately just leave the game running and it will do story quests FOR you. It even has auto combat. I don't really understand the point of this and theres no clear way to turn off auto. Also, the gems that you need to summon for familiars and weapons and stuff are way to expensive and I don't even know how to get them for free. How am i supposed to collect new stuff? Im only level 19-20 right now and the only thing that’s remotely interesting that i got as a reward is a giant cat mount. Its extremely easy to level up in the game as you can just auto do everything without even touching your device. And the story isnt all that interesting either. The game will most likely improve over time, though, this is what i think about it right now.

A solid okay

Visuals are fantastic, if you love ghibli, you’ll enjoy this for a few days. My issues is how hard it is for f2p players. You hit a hard wall starting in the 30’s. The game gives you very few free cash currency, and the dye system and beauty creation system are way too harsh and impossible for f2p people. They also seem stingy with any content in game, most dungeons and adventures are a single play a day type system. It’s also mostly idle play style, and from what I’ve experienced of the combat, the camera is so bad, and aiming control is also garbage, so even the combat is pretty rough. Idle grinding is also pretty garbage, you need hundreds of thousands of exp to level up, and mobs give like 10-30 exp each.. The RnG is so bad.. you need good items to progress, but it’s almost impossible to get if you’re slightly unlucky like me. There’s also a upgrading and evolving system that seems to be a solid okay, hard to get items to upgrade though. The classes are also sex-based, which i feel is such an outdated concept. The cat characters ears don’t change with the hair style, most beauty items are blocked behind a paywall unless you’re extremely lucky early game. Was fantastic for 2 days, give it a try, but expect idle-extremely childish-gameplay. Oh, they also give you a disabled cat mount that is like the worst thing ever. 😂

Boring MMORPG

I was pleasantly surprised to find a Ni No Kuni mobile game as I loved the other two. However, the automatic gameplay defeats the purpose of this being a game. Don’t get me wrong, the auto mode makes it easy to grind and get stronger, but there is no way to turn it off. The quest guide doesn’t give you a chance to explore the beautiful world you’re in. And if you turn it off, you have no idea where to go since the world is so big. There should be an option to turn on quest guide without auto-walking. Also, there’s no way to completely turn off auto-battle. The game has a full-auto and a semi-auto mode. Both of which can be turned off, but the moment you take damage, your character starts auto-battling. There is an option to turn off counterattack mode, but the only difference I’ve noticed is whether or not you use potions automatically. When counterattack mode is off, your character still counterattacks, but won’t heal, so you die, defeating the purpose. Why start the game with a tutorial on how to move and fight if you’re not allowed to when the game actually begins? Their should be more advanced auto-battle options like being able to fight on your own, but have potions get used automatically. That way, you can focus on dps and dodging while the game keeps you alive. I came looking for a new Ni No Kuni game, but all I got was an MMO. The look and feel is there, even the music. But I want to experience the story, characters, and world-building. Now I only turn the game on to let my character make progress for me. My only input tapping the screen to get through a cutscene, turning sleep mode off, or managing my equipment. Please fix this.

Review keeps disappearing and bots are INSANE

I left a couple of reviews the last few days to talk about how the bots are making it so you have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to even log on (and keeps getting worse). But they apparently fell into the void where all my time waiting to log on is at as well. It’s sad because it’s a really fun game! People are right that it’s difficult for f2p players. But there are still daily tasks to do if you are just interested in something to occupy time while waiting on a bus or something. I do wish f2p was better, but I understand that they can’t offer the game 100% for free. The main issue is that it’s pretty much unplayable rn because of bots. UPDATE: the devs fixed the issues with the queue and made it so bots get kicked a lot more often. They’re still prevalent because they’re all the destroyer character in the exact same outfit doing the exact same thing. But now it’s just kinda funny to see them around in military-esque formation since it doesn’t affect my gameplay. I’m still pretty much f2p and my character is lvl 70 (max level is like 120ish) now. can still see my levels increasing which is good, but it is slow. The constant pop up ads every time you increase a level or level up any equipment is annoying. But you can just x right out of them so it’s eh. I enjoy the game, but I’m also someone who doesn’t mind the grind. If you don’t like games that you need to grind to lvl up, you probably won’t like this one. Unless you’re a whale and can just pay to increase levels. I do wish the shop was less confusing. There are like 9,000 different tabs. But once you know what you’re looking for you can go straight to it. Overall I really enjoy this game. The community is good, with of course some a*holes but what can you do, and the story and cutscenes are intriguing.

Doesn’t feel like a game

I usually don’t write reviews but for all the things I’ve heard about the game I genuinely don’t think it deserves all the praise. If you’re used to playing mmorpgs I think you’ll be extremely disappointed with 1 the character creation and 2 not actually being able to make decisions for yourself. If you care about character creation the character creation is extremely limited for male/female characters if you want to play as any character for the stats you can’t change the body type and you might be stuck with a character that doesn’t represent you. In terms of gameplay, for some reason auto questing is the only option you have and your character runs towards quests and auto complete them itself. If I wanted to watch an AI make all the decisions I’d watch a movie. You can stop your character from moving towards the quest, but it gets rid of the marker for that quest so you can’t walk to it yourself because you don’t know where you’re going. I’m extremely disappointed in what this game turned out to be, it’s not fun just watching a computer do every thing. It might be good for really young kids, but even then I don’t think it would be engaging enough for them. I wouldn’t recommend it if your looking for a game to actually play, maybe if you want to watch an interactive movie it’ll be your thing.
