Gear Defenders takes Tower Defense to the next level with its innovative 'Kinetic Power' system. In this steampunk universe, your towers don't just shoot; they need to be powered by a central steam engine. You must strategically place rotating gears to form a chain from the engine to your turrets. Balance your power distribution, upgrade your mechanical blueprints, and defend the core against waves of rust-covered invaders. Every gear placement matters in this high-pressure tactical challenge.

79/100

Gear Defenders is a steampunk strategy fan's dream. Most Tower Defense games are about placing towers and walking away, but Gear Defenders forces you to think about the literal mechanics of your defense. The 'Gear System'—where you have to physically connect your towers to a steam engine using a series of rotating gears—is a brilliant twist. It turns the map into a moving puzzle where a single break in your gear chain can leave your entire frontline defenseless.

The aesthetic is gorgeous, filled with brass pipes, wheezing steam vents, and intricate clockwork animations. Managing heat levels adds another layer of tension; if you overclock your towers for too long, they’ll jam or explode, requiring a costly repair. It’s a game that rewards proactive management rather than just sitting back and watching numbers go up. The variety of robotic enemies keeps you on your toes, and the boss waves are genuine tests of your engineering skills. It’s a smart, stylish, and highly mechanical TD.

Q&A

The power flow is cut immediately. You must replace the gear manually, so it's wise to build 'Redundant Chains' to keep your towers spinning.

Fun, but some bugs, ads are SUPER long
Wed Jan 28 2026 VolfffffE

I’ve overall had lots of fun playing this, addicting gameplay. I’ve encountered a bug twice now on “ENDLESS” runs, where a single enemy will spawn in one of the lanes they aren’t supposed to, and their is no way to switch gears, so the run just ends and you lose out on the daily rewards and the time spent trying to get to level 50 which is annoying. Another bug I’ve run into once is watching an ad to repair the tower health, the ad will end and the tower health remains the same. I don’t mind ADs and understand with the game being free, they have to make revenue somehow, but some of the ads take 2+ minutes to get through and their is no fast forward options or exit options. I don’t mind 1 minute ADs, but when an ad for something takes the amount of time I could take a shower with, it gets a little much and turns my interest down. Shop and pass has some decent deals for the price, but I’m a F2P player with everything I play. 4/5 stars.

Fun game with too many ads
Sun Jan 25 2026 Stevie the witch

I really enjoyed this game but unfortunately it fell victim to the thing so many games do where it gets to a point where it’s egregiously difficult if not impossible to progress through the levels without watching ads. The ads are also long, I think on the shorter end we’re looking at 2 mins and on the long end it’s more like 5. It doesn’t sound too bad until you realize you have to watch ads to repair your wall, ads to get decent soldiers, ads to get good speed gears and ads again to activate specialized gears all in one game. You get 5 three to five min add in one round and end up spending 20 mins on watching them alone. Ive also noticed the updates for your soldiers and wall you can buy with gems or (you guessed it) more ads really don’t do too much. I was really enjoying myself but I just got to a point where the whole game was engaging with ads to make any progress and if you don’t watch them you’ll be stuck on one level for 15 tries with really no progress on winning the round regardless of how many upgrades you buy. It’s so frustrating that so many good games do this. The one caveat is they don’t do ads in between rounds or anything so you technically do get to choose if you watch them (if you’re cool playing one round over and over again indefinitely should you choose not to)

Ok, but balancing issues
Sun Dec 14 2025 Michael Lindley

The game is alright. I have played a decent amount. The one major issue I have is they have monsters that look like cactus that shoot needles that penetrate the entire line of your defenders. One or two at a time isn’t the worst, but they release packs of these that all fire at the same time, and they will obliterate your troops. The counter is the lancer, but the lancer is broken and will more often than not stop in the middle of the field in front of the mob and get killed instantly. In the off chance it does what it’s supposed to and goes all the way to the back of the enemy, it will stay there and the entire pack of cactus will turn and immediately shoot, killing it. The balance is broken, and its make for an incredibly frustrating experience. Editing to take it to one star. This is a badly made game. The lancers are broken, and are supposed to be counters to ranged attackers, but they are dead before ending their animation. Your defenders will have delays due to their animations and the enemies have absolutely zero delays, meaning your defenders are shredded before having a chance to do damage. Meanwhile, if your defenders die before the enemies’ ranged attacks can hit them, the bullet is curved to hit your base. If a defender dies before your attack hits them, the bullet flies to nothing. The balance is beyond broken, the animations cost you, and it’s a very frustrating game to play because of it.

Fun game until the force ads
Sat Jan 03 2026 Joseph von Carstain

Fun game that makes you think a bit, putting gears at the right places to make your units come out faster. Combining gears at the right time can make the difference between winning and losing. The game rewards you a lot with voluntary ads. You can go far in the game, getting powerful units a bit early in the game with it and helping you unlock some much needed locked gears on the board to help you turn the tide of battle. I don’t know if it was because I reached a time limit on the “no ads”. Or I gotten far in the game. But it was giving me mandatory ads whenever I started a new round. That when i stopped playing, don’t have both kinds of ads. I was thinking buying some things in the cash shop, but the moment you begin to force me see ads. Yeah, nah, I’m not going to bother with your game anymore. Do better. Also, Ask someone if they want to see a ad if they click on a watchable ads unit or gear. I’m trying to read a description on a gear when it it just plays whenever I let go of the gear. Most of the time, wasting my time for something that I’m not going to use for that whole match.

Pay to play game
Fri Jan 09 2026 Night.Owl.1979

This is a pay to play game I literally saw a bundle package that was 500 AMERICAN DOLLARS that was marked down to 50$It was so outrageously over priced because they want to make it look like you’re getting a steal And it wasn’t even worth 50. I estimate that the package was worth two cents and if they decide to actually post this this is the last they will ever hear from me, Next time I’ll just play saints row on my Xbox 360 instead of wasting my time and money on these stupid apps. Thanks whales forMaking it impossible to enjoy the game without destroying my fortress or paying $500 for a useless package that gives you gold that I don’t even know what you can buy with it. Are you people care about is money nowadays you don’t care if someone actuallyEnjoys your game or not, you don’t care someone gets bullied on your platform, you only care about money and I got news for you I’m not going to buy from any of you pencil necksWith your fancy management position with stock options and the generous salary with great benefits. I’m done supporting you people I hope you lose every nickel you make on refunds because angry parents didn’t give their man children permission to spend on daddy‘s credit card like the rich trust fund babies they are

Too “random”
Sat Jan 24 2026 JimJohnMarks

This is a great premise for a game & I want to love it. BUT… it isn’t the pure strategy & resource building game it appears to be. The gears you use to level up each wave within a challenge are “random”. Which means, you have no control over whether a successful pattern of deployment even exists on any given attempt. INCLUDING times when you’d have enough coins to buy all three gears but the third one is routinely “watch this two minute commercial in the middle of your round” to deploy. Consequently, you will get stuck replaying some boards several times which should have been an easy success with the resources you have access to & watching long commercials you shouldn’t really need to watch but they’re intentionally preventing you from using the resources you have instead. ALSO, if a game isn’t going to resume the current challenge if it accidentally closes or crashes then you MUST ensure all the commercials actually successfully end. Otherwise, we gave you revenue & not only didn’t get something for it, we lost resources for it. That’s stealing.

Fine game, misleading marketing, and grindy mechanics
Wed Jan 21 2026 auftskcgs

I had a great time with this game for a while, the mechanics are unique and the satisfying gameplay (especially when you get far enough in your build to spin the gears with every rotation) was enough for a while for me to ignore the rampant loot box mechanics and near necessity to watch adds to progress. What really made me stop playing was when I encountered a wave with multiple boss monsters with aoe damage and insane range. I tried all of my leveled units, and even got lucky enough to get a tier 4 shield in my first wave from a random gear creator, but the bosses were so much of a stat block that I got completely destroyed regardless. I wish I could rate this game higher because I did enjoy my time for a while, but the description is NOT accurate. This game is 100% very grindy and often luck based, so I would only recommend this to people who play gachas or enjoy losing multiple times in a row to gain enough materials to increase unit levels.

Way Too Many "Offers"
Thu Feb 05 2026 Hurricaneal3x

Game is SUPER fun but this game is super greedy when it comes to just how much stuff they get you to buy. They also offer "ad tickets" instead of a one-time "no ads" purchase which is super lame. It's a shame because this game is super fun but then they leave the little red bubbles on tabs to get you to try to watch ads, ads, ads. And the store is so FULL of microtransactions it's crazy. Also HATE energy systems. Just let me play! Also whoever designed the desert level needs to never touch game design again. The RNG also isn't very "random" as the game will sometimes choose to give you one maybe two units the whole game. Make it more random and give us a free reroll per "round" as a way to give us some more "skill" and options. its annoying to play a match and be frustrated bc you're just not getting any ranged units or a repair gear or etc etc.
