78/100

Auto Brawl Chess is a fascinating hybrid that attempts to marry the strategic depth of a traditional auto-battler with the fast-paced progression of an RPG. The core loop of drafting heroes and watching them duke it out on a grid is satisfying, especially when you manage to trigger powerful faction synergies. It feels a bit more accessible than some of its hardcore competitors, which is a breath of fresh air for casual players.

However, the 'Battle Royale' aspect adds a layer of tension that keeps you on your toes. While the meta-progression and hero leveling can occasionally lean into the 'grind,' the variety of units ensures that no two matches feel exactly the same. It’s a polished experience with high production values, though some of the monetization elements can feel a bit pushy during the mid-game climb.

Legendary heroes have a higher appearance rate once your player level reaches 8 or 9. Focus on survival and economy early on to reach these levels.

Long time player with a rant
Thu May 26 2022 Rout130

First off, I love this game. I love it because I’m able to put hours of grinding into something and see some sort of progress. You’re able to change the way your games going if by chance and intuition, which is a thrill. Played since the beginning of COVID, and I like that it’s something I can enjoy without paying money. Payed for the chess pass 2-3 times, but that’s when I was extremely bored. Now, my rant, I want whatever producer/engineer/graphics/nimrod that thought of the idea of power essence and breakthrough to be tortured by watching Teletubbies for 48- hours. There’s not other way to get this stupid thing without grinding this maze that knocks you out in the third round. I have 7 heroes sitting at 50 with thousands of upgrade points, but can’t upgrade them. Real dumb move you SpongeBob lunatic. For those thinking of starting it, don’t. Because the breakthrough process will make you jump through a window or delete the app. Either or.

No strategy, all luck

This game claims its about strategy when its not. Theres really no skill to it. Its all about luck. Certain characters are better then others so if your unlucky your opponent keeps getting good characters. This has happened to me quick a bit but ive also been on the other side where i demolish everyone. Theres also a button you can tap that will fix your lineup for you and give you the best chances possible. This option really takes the skill/strategy out of the game. In all honesty all you have to do to win get whatever characters cost more and hit the best line up button. If they dont switch anyone then everyone on your side line can go and hopefully you get more good people. This game is too simple/easy and doesnt require any attention to win. Overall the idea behind the game is nice. It reminds me of the magic chess on mobil legends, which i would say requires a little more skill/strategy but still heavily reliant on luck. If your just looking to pass time and dont want to really get too into what your playing than this is perfect. Also, if you've come to check out this game from the advertisements, then prepare to be disappointed. Its nothing like the ad. This game is F2P but can very easily be pay to win. I would recommend finding another game. Also, if your opponent has Mary then you lost. She has a massive AOE heal and she basically spams it. The most broken/OP character in the game. She really is unfair and needs a nerf.

Addictive

(Update) There is one major problem with the game - the power values are meaningless as a way of judging whether you'll beat an opponent or not. You can have twice the power level and still lose. The new maze levels are the worst offender of this - in fact they seem broken. The farther you get, the more you need to FAR surpass the opponent power level (more than twice as much) in order to win. Why have such an important number if it barely means anything? (End of update) A lot of similarities to their previous game Mighty Party, including all the characters art and audio. Gameplay has some things the same, but the core mechanics are different. The main thing I don't really like is the cheesy marketing of the mini-game (which you rarely see, though it is actually kinda fun) to attract players. Why? Why include a mini-game like that that looks nothing like the main game and use it to advertise the game which already has decent graphics and gameplay? It just feels cheap. Plus there are a lot of screens pushing you to buy premium content. I can understand that since the devs need to make money, but both of them together just make the devs' business strategy feel sleazy.

Has NOTHING to do with Strategy
Sat Feb 20 2021 Widukind27

This game has nothing to do with strategy. The available characters are given randomly and arbitrarily. So it’s more about luck than anything else. The determination of draws and victories also seem to be arbitrary. What factors are considered to decide who wins a draw? Is it based on the total number of skill points one has? Is it based on the number of characters still on the board? Seems inconsistent, so I’m never sure. Here’s an idea, if both players still have a character on the board, it’s always a draw...makes more sense, doesn’t it? Perhaps the promise of winning through purchasing bonus packages may seem enticing, but I think we all know that a game that requires you to get upgrades to win and not rely on actual skill is a game that won’t last long. It’s skills that get better over time, the bonus packages can only go so far, unless they decide to offer a package that lets you automatically win. But then what’s the point? Buying your way to the top is not the same as developing your character line-up and your skills. Saying this is a great game considering that it’s free is irrelevant. There are plenty of games that actually test skill and ability. Don’t be deceived by a game that lets you win sometimes just because the algorithm is in your favor. Let me download an actual chess game now...that at least tests my skills.

Fun concept, simple money grab

I’d like to start off by saying this game is fun and reminds me of Legion TD from Warcraft 3. That being said, there is very little strategy/skill required to win this game. I spent some time gathering up hero cards so that they’re so over leveled for my rank, that no one can touch me. Second, I’m someone that refuses to pay money for fake things in an app I won’t use in a month, and this game clearly survives off of micro transactions. It’s brutal how many times a “deal” pops up trying to get $5, $10, and even $20 for their battle pass. It’s absurd and very clear the creators had no interest in making a game that will last, as opposed to making a quick buck. There will always be those leaderboard guys from China who probably spend $100’s a week to keep up but I have no interest in a game like that. Wish more games would emphasize skills and not just P2W. I can’t wait for the automatic response from the creators saying they’re so sorry! And tell me to contact customer support like that will fix the issues. If you need something to preoccupy yourself on vacation downtime, this is the game, but it’s not useful for much else unless you like wasting your money on nonsense.

Love it but issues.

Off the bat. Love the game. I do t experience the crashing issues other players have talked about. Hero’s do drop at a chance but I can get around that. I don’t agree with the if someone wins three ina row they will dominate cause that’s been me and I still lost. I got lucky and on many occasion I have worked my way from the bottom to win. Not easy. But it can be done. My issue is with events. Having to use a certain hero in matches. That hero will barely drop and not enough to get one to three tasks done. But when the event is over drops Like crazy. I personally love the insane mode. I think you have to pay for it. But it’s so much fun it’s worth it. Insane mode should have a ranking or should effect your pvp ranking. Cause well, it’s pvp. Change that and change the event dropping of heroes needed. Maybe also. Make a change to when certain factions are needed for the events. Give those factions a buff. The factions needed don’t always help people win. To use the faction needed you almost have to lose if you want to complete all tasks. Great game though

Really fun for a day, then it becomes pay to win

Levels Pawn 1-10 are super fun, the gameplay is engaging and really balanced. As soon as you hit Knight 1, the difficulty level doubles and unless you pay to upgrade your heroes you’re going to be stuck in limbo between Pawn 10 and Knight 1. Also, the online fights aren’t really online. I discovered this when a system level alert came up on my phone at the beginning of an online round and then a second later after “reconnecting”, the round was over and the results displayed. ADDITIONALLY, the countdown for selecting new heroes continued immediately and the next round began directly after the countdown, which would be impossible if there was a human player on the other side, as they would still be seeing the round played out while I began the next round. I tested this 10-15 times with the same results. So basically, it was fantastic for two days so it gets two stars. Clash of clans is much better in terms of balancing pay to win vs grinding it out. Both are equally possible and plenty of people do both. Personally, I don’t spend money on games unless it’s to buy it once so I guess that’s the end of this game for me.

Great game!!

Yes, there is a “pay to win” feature. But what games doesn’t? Leveling up is fairly easy. So you lose a few battles. If the game was too easy it would be boring. If you want easy go play one of coloring or word search games. If you grind it out you will level up. ( IFY level up the 1 or 2 stars characters too. A mistake I made early on). If you do ALL of the game things you will get all the resources you need. It just takes time. But the artwork is incredible. And the animation is very very is well done. Give it a try. Update: If you give this game a chance try it for a few days. If you like it, spend the $5.00 to get the auto feature on the journey portion of the game. Totally worth. You will level up very quickly. The only negative thing I can say is I wish I had a bit more time to choose my characters. Many times I need a few more seconds to decide and the next round starts. Just a few more seconds would be awesome
