Dinsun Expert Review

Our Expert Score

91/100

Wordscapes is the undisputed king of the 'word-connect' genre, and it’s easy to see why millions of people are addicted to it. The formula is incredibly simple: you have a circle of letters and a crossword-style grid, and you just swipe to connect them. But what makes Wordscapes special is the execution. The backgrounds are stunning high-definition landscapes that change as you progress, creating a relaxing, almost meditative atmosphere that counteracts the brain-bending puzzles.

The difficulty curve is expertly tuned. It starts off with three-letter words that anyone can find, but eventually, you'll find yourself staring at five letters for ten minutes, trying to figure out that one obscure word you missed. It’s educational, satisfying, and doesn't rely on high-stress timers. The 'daily puzzles' and 'seasonal events' give you plenty of reasons to check in every day. It’s the perfect blend of a brain workout and a stress-reliever—a permanent fixture on any puzzle lover's phone.

Love the game

***Update: I used to play this game all the time, but there are now so many ads it is just not much fun now. They are more frequent, last longer and are harder to make go away without agreeing to something I don’t want. My grandsons still have fun with it, but just put up with the ads. I would gladly pay for an ad free version. It would be worth the price, but if they have an ad free option, I haven’t seen it.*** I have been playing this game for several years, and am happy that it always keeps going. I am on a level in the mid 6,000s now, and my only wish is that there were a way to change levels so that my grandson could play it with me, without losing all my history. Better yet, could you make a version of the game for children just learning to spell? He got this game, but was only able to play it a short while till it started getting too difficult. **update again, he is now in second grade and he and his friend have a lot more fun with it now** But to anyone reading this who is curious about the game, it is really well designed. I don’t pay attention to all the side games, but they look like fun. *****Now have two grandsons addicted to this game, and I need to update regarding the side games that I always ignored. The boys are 6 and 8 now, and the gems and animals and I don’t even know what all else there is, but it makes it just even more fun for them. Thank you for making this game so fun for any age. In fact, after my previous update I saw that I could pay a small fee to go ad free for a week or a month, but luckily, the boys found the inner challenges so engaging, I did not need to go that route.

Good game but def needs improvement

I’ve been playing this game on and off for years and I’ve always enjoyed it as a relaxation, brain teaser type of game. However, there are a few things that I’ve noticed which could improve the game. 1. I find the puzzles to be incredibly repetitive, with the same words being used over and over again; please consider expanding the game’s vocabulary to increase difficulty/diversity. 2. I used to do the weekend tournaments, but for the last 6 months I’ve focused on the Weds-Thurs challenges to try and get all the profile pics for each category. I am at about 91% completion for all of the categories released and the drop rates for the final 1-2 photos are definitely WAY TOO low. For several of the categories I’ve opened nearly 100 boxes (meaning over 200 encounters) without receiving EITHER of the final two photos. When the categories are newly released, it seems the developer creates a random algorithm, because each photo seems equally likely to be encountered. But then the algorithm switches once you get to your final 1-2 and it becomes incredibly difficult to encounter these photos/rewards again, to the point I don’t really want to play anymore. It takes a couple of hours just to get to 30-40 boxes and it just doesn’t seem worth it if the drop rates are this low. 3. And yes, like many have said, the ads are too prevalent and the game is trying too hard to take our money, which it was never like in the past. I hope this review finds you well!

Wordscapes New Version
Fri Jan 27 2023 WB in SD

The new version of Wordscapes is a lot of fun. However, the developers have made it impossible to get all of the animals. In the beginning, when it first appeared, you only had to have 300 points or 900 points to get an animal. After the first week they changed it to 900 and1500 points. There’s really no difference in what you get between the 900 and1500 points, they give you the same animals over and over again. Supposedly for the 1500 points you can get the level four animals; but I haven’t even been able to accumulate several of the level twos and level threes. The other thing that is completely annoying is the star rush. It’s pointless. There are no instructions to tell you how to actually see how many points that you get or even how to play the game. All it does is get in the way of what you’re trying to do. It’s just another way for them to get you to pay for coins. The portraits are getting old. Again, it’s impossible to get all portraits in a section. You get the same ones over and over again. The last time I actually cashed in my points, it gave me the same 3 animals every time. I stopped playing. it’s not worth it. As of this writing, January 2023, they have had the same butterflies up for the last five weeks. There have been no new butterflies. How many butterflies can one possibly accumulate. Developers need to purge some of their side activities, especially the star rush. They also need to take a look at how the computer decides the distribution of the characters.

I've been playing this game for years & it's the only consistent game I play. I try to play at least the daily game & participate in the wknd tournaments when I can. Aside from the wknd tournaments I love that I'm not being timed to finish each puzzle, it's a great word game to kill time when waiting for something or whenever I have free time, I just pick up where I left off. I do get stumped here & there, which is helpful to have hints to use when needed. I love the extra ways to get rewards without having to pay for it, I don't like having to pay for gameplay so this game is a winner! There's still so many unsolved puzzles to get to & goals to reach, especially with the new additions of the animals & variety of portraits to get. I only wished the butterfly game was longer than a day & ended at nighttime, rather than the morning. My free time would be in the afternoon till bedtime which is not enough to get butterflies or grow my habitat, so it's taking forever to build on this part, & not long enough for me to get my reward for free cocoons. Or it'll be available in the morning but I forget cause I have to work. One other thing I did notice recently that is annoying & disturbing, is the game sound would play when my phone is on silent. I would be playing the game for a bit then out of nowhere I hear the game, which is not good if it's going to wake someone up or interrupt somewhere I'm at that needs silence or no distractions. Hopefully this bug will get fixed ASAP! Aside from this, awesome game!

Recent Update More Annoying, Looping Ads
Sat Oct 14 2023 MsGadgetLady

Update 14OCT23 ~ Changing the method of adding points to use hints has helped to save my eyes from too much screen time; if you need a hint, you can get one but only if you have enough points or one of the other hints such as a bullseye which you can earn by watching thank you videos or purchasing. Some of the longer words are ridiculous because they are not thought of as one word. The new configuration has a time set. Once you have watched so many ads, you will not be eligible to watch anymore ads until a certain time has elapsed; that time will appear after watching the last ad to earn points. The new format helps with managing the procrastination bug when I should be doing something else or sleeping but get caught up with this app. Also, there may be other opportunities to earn points by watching ads while playing. You just need to be aware of any videos that may show up while playing. Good time to gives eyes a break from looking at the screen too long. The looping issue does not occur anymore. The most recent update seemed to resolve the issue with ads hanging where I would have to force the app to close. Previous review after update: Some of the ads were annoying before this recent update. Now, the adds play multiple times before points are rewarded. In addition, there are limited options for watching ads to add points. Thus, there is no way to add more points unless you pay for them of which I am not about to do. 😕 Time to move on to something else and catch up on the reading I have been planning to do instead of wasting time with this app. 🤔

Great app, but…

This app is great overall. It’s very easy to use, as well as appropriately challenging. However, there are a few things that irked me about it. The first thing is that hints cost an unholy amount of coins. 100 coins may seem like a good deal at first - but if you find, say, five hidden words per level per set, that’s 16x5 = 80. Add that to the 25-coin bonus you get for completing the set, you have 105 coins. That’s one hint per set. Most people, myself included, need more than that. And while there are things like daily gifts and ad-watching that earn coins, they barely help. I would suggest lowering the coin cost for hints and other powerups. The second thing is the ads. They appear at the bottom of the screen while you’re doing a level, which is fine if a bit distracting. However, my biggest issue is with the ads that appear in between levels. And by between levels, I mean between every. single. level. And let’s say you’re in the middle of a level and have closed the app. You want to go back to your level, so you innocently open the app again and… surprise! Another ad! What’s more, a lot of the apps advertised seem cheap and/or untrustworthy - there are a lot of ripoff games and casino games, for instance. There is also the occasional age-inappropriate ad. What’s more, I seem to get a lot of ads for local places. Wordscapes has no permissions for location sharing, and yet I am constantly getting ads for museums, shows, and restaurants around where I live. I’m not too concerned about it, but it does seem suspicious that this app would use my location and not even tell me.

I have been playing Wordscapes for 5+ years now and it’s been my favorite go-to game to pass time while still using my brain. It’s been great watching this game grow into what it have become, from the pet system, to earning pfps, the mount rush, all of it, I really like it. However, there are certain things that really take away from the motivation to play and enjoyability. One being the incessant number of ads in the game. I purchased the no-ads feature, but the sheer number of ads you get for completing a level or tapping out of the game for a quick second are ridiculous. I get that everyone has their money to make but come on you guys. My other issue with this game is that it seems like it is intentionally keeping you from earning top grade rewards. I do the Wednesday-Thursday challenge of earning profile pictures and the drop rates for certain pictures are way too low. There are two sections I’ve been grinding for over a year now because I am only missing one part for the picture and it won’t drop. I just went through 35 boxes, and it would not drop that one missing picture and that is frustrating. I have the same issue with mount rush, but I won’t get into that. Other than that, the game is fantastic. As a long time player, I hope you guys see this review and really take it into consideration. Thank you!

Those of you who wrote this are quite young, and I applaud you. How do I know you are young? Because of the words you chose to use. One example: nerd. Not-much-older guys probably would not choose that word. Oh, yes, I checked the dictionary to be sure it was a legitimate word. Didn’t used to be. BUT a few times you have told me- a retired English teacher - that my word doesn’t exist. Therefore it can‘t go into the circle which is the only way I can earn points ( I know, sometimes you give me points, but that’s not the topic here). For example, I just typake” . It didn’t go into my circle with points, which is how you let players know they spelled a word incorrectly OR it isn’t a word. I typed “ spake” and you tossed it out - no points for the point circle. It IS a legitimate word: past tense of speak. Look it up. I was on Level 567, or close to that when an ad at the bottom which I accidentally touched, covered the play field. It would not go away - I tried so many things before I gave up. (Not your fault! ) So I started over. That’s when I tried “spake” and you trashed my word. And you were wrong. Are you still in high school? The game is well- designed. But ya gotta check the dictionary, guys! (BTW, to me “ guys” is a 2- gender word. Wanted you to know that in case one or both or all of you are female. Statistics say not, but statistics are wrong sometimes.) Just add the word spake as a legitimate word - since it is - and I will be happy. You don’t need to add anything to my game. I just wanted you to know. From an old lady who is enjoying your game.
