The Salt Keep is a masterclass in the 'Gamebook' or 'Text-Adventure' genre. It is a dense, atmospheric, and incredibly well-written fantasy-horror story that respects the player's intelligence. You play as a traveler who finds themselves trapped in a dying, salt-choked village, and the choices you make determine not just your survival, but the very nature of your character.
The writing is the star here—it’s evocative, grim, and full of hidden lore that rewards careful reading. What I love is the 'Condition' system; your character’s mental and physical health are constantly at stake, and every interaction feels weighty. It’s not just about picking 'A' or 'B'; it’s about managing your limited resources and deciding who to trust in a world that feels genuinely hostile. If you enjoy games like '80 Days' or 'Sorcery!', The Salt Keep is an absolute must-play.
Extensive branching narrative
Rich, atmospheric world-building
Deep inventory and stat systems
Hundreds of unique hand-drawn icons
In this world, Salt is both a resource and a curse. Be careful how much you carry; too little and you can't trade, but too much and it will begin to affect your character's sanity. Check your 'Inventory' screen often to see how your current load is affecting your stat rolls.
The game uses 'Invisible Dice' for many actions. If you want to play a stealthy character, prioritize your 'Agility' through your choices. If you fail a check, don't restart—the game often has very interesting 'Failure' paths that reveal more of the world's secrets.
Yes, The Salt Keep is a text-focused experience, similar to a digital novel with RPG mechanics.
I’m a big fan of fantasy and RPGs, including text based games, and The Salt Keep did not disappoint. I felt invested in what happens to the characters, and the story keeps you engaged with some fun twists and turns. It would be cool to have some sort of music or sounds to go with the different areas, but that said, the writing did a great job conveying suspense and urgency in the different scenes. I hope we get more games from the developer soon!
Captivating and thrilling interactive fiction with a user interface that is both accessible and lovely.
The very first puzzle in the prologue requires you to visit a well, but both links out of that page lead to blank pages and turns all the other tabs into blank pages as well, making it impossible to progress from there. Complete waste of money.
Salt Keep is a fantastic story full of complex characters, deeply thoughtful writing, and just enough action and RPG elements.
