Our Expert Score

80/100

The Queen's Gambit Chess is much more than just a chess engine with a skin. It’s a love letter to the Netflix series that genuinely tries to teach you the game the way Beth Harmon sees it. The 'Beth Vision' mechanic, which highlights threats and opportunities on the board, is a brilliant way for beginners to start understanding the geometry of the game. It makes learning feel like a superpower.

The presentation is top-notch, with locations from the show like the basement of the orphanage and Beth's apartment recreated beautifully. You can play against characters from the show, each with their own distinct AI personality and skill level. Whether you're a grandmaster or someone who just learned how the knight moves, there's a lot of value here. It’s easily one of the most polished and welcoming chess apps available.

It’s a great game, only minor issues

I downloaded this game through the Netflix app. I love being able to play any game without ads, especially board games. My only complaint about the app is moving any piece in 3D is awkward sometimes. I have to press the square several times because it does not register (or the piece is blocking the square so I thinks I’m deselecting the piece). I could switch to 2D but that ruins immersion. I’m not even sure if there would be a better way to streamline anyway, expect maybe tap and hold would allow you to virtually pick the piece off the board so you can see all moves, and then tap the square to release

Great Game!!

This is a very well put together game. If you are a fan of the series, it has beautiful made scenes from movie. If you are learning chess, it’s a fun way to learn with many puzzles you are tutored through from many places and characters that were in the movie. AND you can even play games with these personalities. While you play you are told move was good, poor, etc. and the types (eg skewer, fork etc). It keeps track of you wins , draws and losses. It even has an on-line module to play someone. When you play you also have choices of how much help you want. As you move along you get ‘coin’ to spend on buying scenes from series, chess sets, avatars, etc. I honestly had no idea how much was put into this product. Kudos all around!(btw, from comment about not seeing board well, you do have a choice to go 2d or 3d. And in 3d you can use your fingers to move board around and zoom in and out).

Serious Study

I knew most of the moves of each player all my life but had no understanding of the game and it’s strategies. My 27 year old son has played chess for years but I don’t play him as I always lose. Watching “Queen’s Gambit” several times I realized that playing well takes study, practice, keen observation along with a memory for strategy. Your app is a good start for me to begin. At 77 years old, I’m really enjoying the process. Also, the graphics and building blocks for learning the game are super!

Extraordinary

The Queen's Gambit is an extraordinary chess game that perfectly blends strategic depth with accessible gameplay, making it a must-have for both seasoned players and newcomers. The design is impeccable, featuring a beautifully crafted board and pieces that evoke the elegance and intensity of the game portrayed in the namesake series. Its innovative rules add a refreshing twist to classic chess, challenging players to think creatively and plan meticulously. The game encourages critical thinking and problem-solving, making each match not just a battle of moves, but a thrilling narrative journey. A solid 5 out of 5 stars for its engaging gameplay and aesthetic appeal.

“Enhanced Accessibility Request: Implementing Text Size Options for Improved User Experience”
Sat Dec 09 2023 Jay Wisdom

Dear [Chess App Development Team], I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for the incredible design and functionality of your chess app. The graphics and overall user interface are truly impressive. However, as a user who values clarity and accessibility, I’d like to highlight an issue that I believe could significantly enhance the user experience for a broader audience. I’m among the many users who encounter difficulty reading the messages within the app, particularly due to small text size. Despite wearing reading glasses, the current font size presents challenges, especially for individuals over 35 years old. My suggestion is to incorporate a text size adjustment feature into the app settings. By enabling users to personalize the text size according to their preferences, you could significantly improve accessibility for a more diverse demographic, including those who may require larger text for a clearer interface. This enhancement wouldn’t just cater to a wider audience but could also amplify your marketing reach, especially among older users who value clear instructions and communication within the app. I believe this adjustment aligns with the app’s commitment to providing an exceptional user experience and would greatly enhance its accessibility. Please consider implementing this feature in your future updates, as it could make a substantial difference in ensuring that all users, regardless of age or visual abilities, can fully enjoy and engage with your fantastic app. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to witnessing further improvements in your already remarkable chess app. Sincerely, JSON, JROD, & JASM

Something’s gone wrong! Crashes immediately.

I would be rating this 5 * as it was looking to be far & away the best, most enjoyable, entertaining, & effective tutorial app for learning chess. Really nothing I’ve looked at comes even close. Not just for chess but possibly *any* subject. I had gotten just a little ways into it, got a new phone, the top of the line iPhone currently (16 Pro Max) & now when I open it it *crashes* instantly. Appears on screen, so starts loading, then disappears. When I then look at choosing running apps it’s there so in ram. When I pick it, it again appears & disappears, this time it disappears from the running apps. :( Developers, please fix! I’d sure love to give it that 5 * rating! Also, you know, use it.

The app is great very every skill level . If you have no idea how to play, it will teach you all the basics: how to identify pieces; how to set up the board; how to move each piece; and how to capture your opponent with each piece. It allows you to practice the basic steps , with immediate feedback. As you progress , so to does the challenges and teachings. I liked the movie, so I enjoy the familiar locations and people within the app that inspire me to keep learning and progressing . So far, I’ve not experienced any glitches.

Why do you refuse to update for iOS 26? You took forever to respond to iOS 18.

Update on update: The devs don’t update because it’s no longer new. No more gifts or goals. Four months and NOTHING. Update: it took months and I unsubscribed to Netflix. They finally updated for iOS 18 and it works. Update: It no longer works at all. I updated to iOS 18.5, and all it does is crash immediately! Please fix! I’ve been playing for over a year now, and at first I was having fun and liked improving as I meandered through the “journey.” A couple months ago, the game stopped offering new weekly badges, and there’s a warning that pops up every time I sign in. Something about not being connected to the internet (except I am). I complained over the phone & a few days later it seemed almost fixed. I was again getting daily goals, though still no new badges. Now it’s back to saying I’m not online, and I can only get new goals if I connect. I’m running 18.3.2 on an iPad, so I’m current. Fix the app, please!
