Squell is a sophisticated word game that tasks players with manipulating a grid of letters. Unlike traditional word searches, Squell requires you to slide entire rows and columns to find the correct alignment. With over 200 handcrafted levels, the game evolves from simple four-letter finds to complex multi-word grids that require careful planning and a sharp eye.

Our Expert Score

78/100

Squell is a surprisingly deep word-puzzle experience that feels like a cross between Boggle and a Rubik's Cube. The core mechanic involves sliding rows and columns of letters to form words, which sounds simple until you realize that every move can disrupt three other potential words you were building. It demands a level of spatial reasoning that most word games ignore.

The minimalist aesthetic is a major plus, keeping the focus entirely on the grid. While the early levels serve as a gentle introduction, the later 'Genius' stages are genuine brain-burners. My only minor gripe is the lack of a built-in dictionary for some of the more obscure words the AI accepts, but as a pure logic-meets-vocabulary challenge, it’s one of the most polished indies I've played this year.

Engaging and challenging!

I recently downloaded this new game, and it has quickly become one of my favorites! From the moment I started playing, I was hooked by its fun and engaging gameplay. The game not only tests your vocabulary but also challenges your spatial reasoning, making it a perfect blend of brain exercise and entertainment. What sets this game apart is its unique approach to word puzzles. It’s not just about finding words; you also need to strategically find the combinations, adding an extra layer of difficulty that keeps things interesting. The graphics are crisp, the interface is user-friendly, and the overall experience is seamless. I've only been playing for an hour, but I'm already addicted. If you're looking for a game that will keep your mind sharp and provide hours of fun, this is definitely the one to try! Highly recommend!

Downloaded this the other day. The game is easy enough to jump right in and start playing but challenging enough that I find myself coming back often and trying to beat my high score. Each level gets progressively harder and keeps things really entertaining.

Fun game! Small gripe

I love the game! It’s challenging, and different. But when using different word checking resources, there is little help with Squell. And there is a chance you know an existing word that isn’t counted towards what the game recognizes as being a possibility. I suggest at least expanded options, one of which shows what words are actually possible on the board. And for fun, it could show what these words mean. But again, all only as an option for those just getting into the game or trying to expand their vocabulary.

Very fun game!

Squell is super addictive - I’m still only working on 4-letter words & have spent hours trying to beat it! The simple format makes it a great brain challenge.

Great game, missing a scoreboard

Well conceived word game, with simple, effective UI. The game greatly misses an internal scoreboard, which keeps track of one’s best scores across games over time. As it stands, there is no such feature in the app, even though achieving a high score is what this word game is about.

Spelling with strategy

Great game for brain engagement. Fun to work against the move count to spell words. Working out strategic moves before moving the tiles feels clever & smart.
