Our Expert Score

78/100

Shanghai Mahjongg Puzzle is a polished, quintessential tile-matching experience that respects the classic roots of the genre while making it accessible for modern touchscreens. The game’s primary strength lies in its tranquility; the backdrops are beautifully rendered with traditional motifs that don't distract from the actual board. The tile physics feel 'heavy' and satisfying, making every successful match feel impactful.

While many Mahjongg clones suffer from cluttered UI or aggressive monetization, Shanghai stays focused on the zen of the puzzle. The difficulty curve is well-managed, starting with simple 'Turtle' layouts and expanding into complex multi-layered structures that require genuine foresight. It is the perfect 'waiting room' game—it doesn't demand 100% of your emotional energy, but it rewards a sharp eye and a methodical approach to clearing the board.

Fun

There is a variety of interesting and fun things to do. I have played it for a short while and have really enjoyed it. It helps with frustration and stress so it will be my go to game. Even when I’m bored and have nothing I want to do, it helps. I really recommend it.

Mostly ads
Wed Jan 14 2026 Kar SF

This game started out being really fun! As you progress through the levels, you end up spending a lot more time watching ads than you do playing the game. A lot. We’re talking 30 second videos for one short game, a minute or longer videos every few games. Doesn’t matter if you win or not, you’re watching an ad. If you walk away from the ad and don’t hit the prompts in a timely fashion, you have to watch a second ad. And if I see that Gossip Harbour add one more time I’m going to scream. I will delete the app just to avoid having to watch that specific ad again.

There’s no way to opt out of tracking in this game

I just opened Shanghai Mahjong to start playing and the first screen that shows up is for it to allow tracking. It only has one button to say allow and continue. There is no place where I’m able to exit out of there or say do not track. That is against Apple’s rules. I have a screenshot of it. I waited and waited and waited for something to come up that would show that I could get out of that screen, but the only way out of the screen is for me to accept tracking, which I will not do so I will be reporting this to Apple.

Not relaxing VERY annoying

There is no way to mute the ads. Ads play constantly at the bottom 24/7 there is never not an ad playing. It’s the same 3 ads over and over and over and over it never stops not for 1 second. And then there are full ads you have to watch that are 1 minute to 2 minutes long between every single level. Uninstalled after about 30 levels I couldn’t take it! Unless you play with the sound completely off then yea it’s a good mojshlong game for sure. Like everything else in life, greed ruins everything.

Not liking the latest update
Sun Feb 15 2026 MrObsessive

The game I’ve found to be very well laid out, but this latest update as of the other day has this “automatic matching” when you match a certain tile…..at least two of them as they’re highlighted. I don’t like that at all, as I’m finding that I’m losing levels more often than before, as it’ll match tiles I may not want matched at that moment. I get that it’s supposed to be a way of “helping”, but I find it more annoying than not since that started. Part of the skill of the game is figuring out which tiles are where, and getting all matched up to beat the level. Not even turning off the automatic matching near the end gets rid of this feature…..I really wish the developers of this feature would ditch this add on. Thanks.

It used to be good

The graphics, competitions, and side goals are wonderful. However, it is not at all enjoyable to play anymore due to the sheer volume of ads. You win a board, and you watch 2 ads. Half the time the ads crash the game, or make you sit for over a minute trying to find and click the x button, only to have to immediately sit through another ad. Suffice to say, unless you are willing to spend $6 on this game it is not enjoyable, it’s just one long commercial break.

Not worth the ads
Tue Jan 13 2026 adsutm

They advertise no ads but they want you to pay for it. It’s misleading. I gave it a try and the ads were not too bad. As you play and get further in, the ads get longer and they have bugs in them. I end up having to shut down the ap and when I go back in, it makes you watch another ad. I love the game but the ads are not worth it. I did find a mahjong website where I can play without the ads and all the bugs.

Can We Eliminate Ads?

I thought at first this game was gonna be different with no ads and video breaks, but when I got thru level 9 or 10, the ads started and they just pile on. Each game break has at least one, then before you get back to the game you get another one. Really get annoying.
