85/100

Rogue Words is a brilliant and punishing mashup of a word game and a roguelike dungeon crawler. I’ve never seen these two genres blended so effectively. You move through a grid-based dungeon, but instead of 'attacking' with a sword, you attack by spelling words. The longer and more complex the word, the more damage you deal. It completely changes how you look at a letter-grid—suddenly, finding a 7-letter word is a life-saving critical hit.

The 'Rogue' elements are fully realized. You collect 'Relics' that modify your spelling (like a relic that makes all 'Z' tiles explode) and encounter 'Cursed Tiles' that penalize you if you use them. Each run feels unique, and the difficulty ramps up perfectly. It’s a very smart, very addictive game that will appeal to anyone who loves 'Spelunky' and 'Scrabble' in equal measure. It’s easily one of the most innovative word games on the App Store.

Finally,a truly no add game!

This game is very challenging and fun to play. Part strategy on boons and potions to “buy” part vocabulary and spelling challenge, the game has multiple “aspects” in which to play and tiers within each aspect. As you play, more types of boons and aspects open to you for play. So the game has a lot of room for evolution before a player would get bored. If you enjoy Scrabble, Words with friends, or even the Yahtzee word game or a host of other word games out there, you owe it to yourself to download this game and give it a try. This is not for the faint of heart. When I say challenging, I mean it. The programer is developing this game in his off time for fun. So it is still evolving. Come join us on discord after you have played and offer your suggestions directly to the programmer. He listens to what players are saying and appreciates feedback. This opportunity to interact with the developer is something players rarely get.

Just what I wanted

There was a similar type of game on Steam and I was so disappointed in it for a variety of reasons, very clunky, and wondered why no one made anything better yet in this niche. Well here it is! And it's exactly what I was hoping for. Really. Cannot overstate that. The animations are great, everything looks professional and no bugs at all I've found. It runs amazing on all my devices and is so much fun! I've already played it for hours and hours. As much as it made my day this was free the maker should really think about adding a donate button as I would absolutely send them a some bucks and I can't be the only one. So much nicer than so many games that actually charge. No micro transactions just a really amazing game. I love rogue likes and word games and this is just like it was made for me. Thank you!

Best game ever?

This is a masterpiece. It’s like if a DND party decided to take a break and play Scrabble mid-game. The dungeon crawler component means that every game is different and that you are always competing against a reliable, masterful opponent: yourself. My wife and I play each morning to wake up, and we’ve enjoyed sharing our favorite go-to words and boon strategies. What I absolutely cannot wrap my head around is how (1) this game is absolutely free and (2) doesn’t use ads or ask for money. This is especially true since it’s a game worth paying for. My only “complaints” are that I wish there were bigger boards available and that the rarity of a word played into the scoring. But, I’m not the genius who out this game together, so there’s probably a good reason why the game doesn’t include those options.

Outstanding Word Game

Best word game I’ve played from the App Store. I like it better than words with friends which is loaded with ads and annoying players wanting to nudge me every 2 seconds. This game doesn’t attack you with ads and I play at my own pace. The boons are a creative way to make this game interesting. Hopefully as updates are released, I hope to see maybe more themes to make the game appear different and of course more boon types. Also, not sure if there is an actual save function like if I have this installed on a new device, the progress may not save and have to unlock everything again. Those are the only things I can think of for the time being. Have fun!

Well done game but not much challenge if good at scrabble-like games

I really want to like this game more. It is nicely done and the rogue-like elements are fun to play with. BUT if you are good at word games, beyond the luck of the tile draw, it’s not particularly challenging. I clear most upper levels with 2-3 words. And if you can do that you really dont need to do the challenges as they only would matter if you needed the help. The money is too plentiful as I could always buy whatever I wanted (didn’t really need to though as the earned boons were usually plenty). Sure you can keep play past ultimate victory but why? I hope this can just be balanced to find its sweet spot. A good example of hitting the mark is Balatro which normally gives you just enough to where you have to make hard choices and the challenge level makes you need the extra help.

Top Notch Word Game

Every choice makes a difference, very satisfying gameplay. Each game you can play completely differently by setting up booms to encourage certain patterns or strategies, very fun. Do aspects have greater impact on gameplay than the two listed attributes? Easily one of my favorite games, it’s like an ongoing challenge I can pick up anytime of day. That’s one other excellent point—the continuity of gameplay is impeccable. Pick right up without a hitch. Really nice UI too. I wish they’d kept the ‘tier’ system. It made each aspect feel unique and purposeful. Now with the mastery levels where you choose the challenge yourself, it feels arbitrary and random. Not as interesting imo.

Outstanding … and (believe it or not) free

This excellent word game seems to come from another time and place, when apps were free and yet well conceived, cleverly implemented, tightly coded, beautifully designed, and fun, challenging, and entertaining to play - in other words, created simply for the sheer pleasure of creating them. This is a little masterpiece in an otherwise dreary and money-fixated world of me-too games with “in-app purchases” - yuck! I would make only one request: a way to show at the end of each level how and why the various boons and potions contributed to my score. I know it’s possible to see a slow animation of it, but a list would be very helpful for old guys like me.

Much like the extremely addicting drug im using as a metaphor in my review, the ways you can come up with new play styles in Rogue Words is left only to your imagination. Also the game will make you stay up all night, craving more. But in a good way. If the developers are reading this, I have 2 small suggestions (if possible). 1. Include some sort of freeplay mode where players could test out strategies with the different boons and find out how they work together. 2. This is more of an opinion, but the game mode where the spaces on the board rotate every level is by far the coolest, most interesting, and most challenging mode, while still being the most rewarding. Its currently only limited to one of the modes. It would be interesting to have this same challenge of the rotating spaces along with the other ingame challenges as well, if any future modes are being explored. Honestly one of the best mobile games to come out in the last 15 years. People have accused me of being on the development team from how much I talk about the game.
