I have enjoyed Picrew for a couple of years now and decided to download the app due to the website having errors and taking too long to load. The problems started as soon as I opened the app. It encouraged me to give it my location so it could serve me targeted ads right off the bat, and then the very next page was an absurd offering for a subscription service? For Picrew?? I declined, thinking that it was ridiculous and a waste of money. Besides, how bad could the advertisement possibly be in order for it to immediately offer it upon me opening the app for the first time or not seeking it? Turns out the offer was a warning sign. It wasn’t bad at first, however, upon re-entering the app I was met with a full-screen ad which appeared to be unskippable. It was either this or the skip button was very well hidden, similarly to the close ad button. Upon finally clicking on my first picrew I was bombarded with audio ads on the side? This is extremely annoying, especially as someone who likes to make Picrews while listening to music. It’s almost incredible to me how scummy this is. The only good outcome of this is that I know now to avoid the app version like the plague. I’ll stick to the more tolerable browser version.
I absolutely love picrew, It’s an amazing and fun app to pass time even though the ads are overwhelming and get aggravating after a while..the one problem I had with this app was that all of a sudden it start glitching and kicking me out of the app in the middle of making a character, it brought me to google and popped up a message saying i needed to click these buttons and give information because someone had access to my phone and was using my information, I first thought it was fake but the pop up notification was an actual iPhone notification so i panicked a little. I didn’t press anything but i ended up having to delete my entire account and delete the app just to realize it was some sort of glitch and has happened to multiple people for about a year or two? I lost all my favorite characters and haven’t been on the app for a while now because of It..but I’m giving it another chance since I do love the app and I hope It gets fixed soon!
At the moment as I’m typing this review, I’m terrified to open the app again. Before I can continue on, every time I open the app, my device gets hot which usually never did anything to affect my performance or cause anything strange to happen. This part is on my end, not the app. Anyways, I was just playing around on the app as I usually do and I noticed how once every now and then, I got these beeping noises. I didn’t pay much attention to it since it could’ve just been from the ads. Once I was done goofing around on the app, I was going to unpause my music until I noticed that there was a 1 second audio that apparently played which was titled “Scanning your device”. This freaked me out because I never installed anything malicious on my device before I installed this app. Overall, my experience with the app was good, maybe a few too many ads, but it’s good for people to use as a reference for their characters.
I love picrew, and have for years now, but it's gotten worse and worse on my phone. Ads have become unmutable, deafening me out of nowhere at a ridiculous volume, happening every three seconds. Picrew has also begun draining my battery insanely quick, like, twenty five percent in half an hour. It's actually ridiculous. This was not a problem I used to have. I don't mind ads, I don't mind advertising supporting the app, but I'm tired of them getting worse and worse and more frequent, more glitchy, every single time I open the app. I'm not sure what happened, but I really don't think this app and this app alone should be making my phone the temperature of the sun. Nor should it blast my eardrums out. I've also never had this many glitches or lag every time I use the app, not even when I was on the website. If it worked properly, I'd be much more inclined to pay for removed ads. I'd need the app to work properly first, however.
This app is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! But… There’s a problem… A big one… It terrifies me… Idk if this is happening to YOU guys, but lately, every-time I’m making a character, right when I’m almost done with the finishing touches… It glitches… Not in just a normal way, a terrifying way… Yk those analog horror glitch things where the screen turns a certain color and something or someone just disappears out of no where? That’s what’s happening to me. Half the screen is a certain color while the other half is a another certain color, my character disappears, or either turns creepy with those black/white soulless eyes. It’s terrifying. And the worst part is: when I tried recording what was happening for proof, it turned off my screen recording… All on its own. When I went to my camera roll to see if it even saved at least HALF of the screen recording, nothing. All my video proof was gone. Please do something about this! :(
I really did like this app. I loved that I didn’t need to sign in every time or risk risqué side ads like when I was in the web browser. Loved that it even had my saved favorites and other info from before I got the app. Honestly one of, if not my all time favorite oc creation app. However— after a week or few, I would be on the app making a character like usual, when I would get forced into Safari or some other browser, and it would threaten my information was being stolen. It got to the point where I didn’t even need to accidentally press the little ad on the bottom. Not to mention, these incidents becoming more and more drastic. Sometimes there would even be offers to get software that would “save me” but I never did knowing that was probably the real trap. That was the least of these threats. This has only occurred when I was on this app. I’m just curious if anyone else got this (becuase it’s only when I was using the app) or if I’m just unlucky. I might redownload this app but considering this may be a real safety issue, I won’t be doing it anytime soon, and I don’t recommend anyone else do so either. Not until this has been proven by the creators to have been fixed. That’s all though… Thank you.
as the title says, genuinely would be a perfect app if not for the constant ads. No ads appear while actively creating something, but anytime I exit the app for even a minute one will pop up as soon as i come back, and i have to sit through an ad every time after clicking on an image maker before i can make an image and again after making the image before i can save it and then *again* before i can make another image either with the same creator or with a different one. very frustrating, would love even just to be able to pay to remove ads either permanently or honestly i would even be willing to pay a couple bucks a month just to not have to deal with the ads. as they are now, it actively puts me off using the app as often as i would like to just because i know im going to have to sit through far far too many ads.
We're coming up to a third of the way through 2021, and that has me thinking about my game of the year candidates.

I was pleased with this corporatized take on Picrew. There are no gender-restricted options, and you can import a hex code for anything that can be colored.
