Best Minesweeper for mobile?
Sat Aug 03 2024 aerblop

If you’re a fan of Minesweeper’s simple puzzle gameplay, this might be the best version of the game on the App store. This game has a wonderfully simple UI design that remains very faithful to the classic Windows Minesweeper, and has plenty of settings and customization to boot. Custom boards and accessibility settings, including guess-free boards to eliminate the main flaw of RNG in classic Minesweeper. Ads are present, not surprising for a free mobile game, but they can be removed with a one time purchase that is only a few bucks; worth it in my opinion. You can get coins, which are only used for buying optional in-game board reskins, not at all necessary to play. There’s no game-breaking powerups or any other pay-to-win nonsense you can get with coins, very refreshing and simple for a mobile game. There’s leaderboards and stats for those who care about it, and daily rewards and challenges that can reward you with a lot of coins. My ONLY very minor nitpick is that the font for the numbers doesn’t match the classic Windows version. It doesn’t bother me too much, and obviously has zero effect on gameplay, but if I change anything about the game that’s the only thing I would do. Otherwise this is a well designed and unobtrusive version of Minesweeper, nothing over-the-top but not lazily designed either. A nearly perfect mobile Minesweeper IMO!

The Greatest Minesweeper Game of All Time

Hands down the best minesweeper I’ve ever played on mobile. For starters, while the game had ads, its a one-time payment of $1.99 to remove them. Most other mobile games require a weekly paying subscription to remove ads, however this one is a simple one-time payment, which is all that is necessary in mobile gaming in my opinion. Not only that, but this game allows you to customize pretty much everything, from animations playing to holding to place down bombs, it’s incredible. The freedom this game allows in it’s settings menu is something most other games lack, and its amazing. Not only that, but the game has Guess-Free mode, meaning it can generate boards that are simply based off of skill, and not literal RNG (Random Number Generator). A few other features include custom board sizes, with the freedom of choosing row count, column count, and even mine count. There’s also themes that you can purchase with in-game currency, being coins, and even a feature that allows you to double coins for a one-time payment of $1.99. There’s a statistics viewer, displaying your statistics for all difficulties and overall, including a win-loss ratio, which I think is pretty interesting. All in all, this game does everything right, and you bet I’ll be paying that two bucks just to remove ads, because it’s totally worth it.

GET THIS MINESWEEPER, NO OTHER ON APP STORE WILL TOP IT

Seriously for Real this is the best minesweeper app. Theres always debate about which controls are best, which gui options, themes, and bells and whistles. Traditional players may yell “i just want NORMAL minesweeper, heck all these extra things >:(“ guess what. You have the option to TURN ALMOST ANY OPTION OFF. This is the Pique minesweeper experience with custom boards, traditional boards, retrying level, turning off retrying levels, cool themes, classic theme, hold to flag, quick flagging, hints, auto zoom, no zoom, reset zoom, starting the game blank, starting the game with a path and so so so much more. If for a SECOND you have a complaint about a feature, just check the settings and you can change it. The ads are not intrusive, only between games. (I dont like that there is an ad DIRECTLY after the win, i wanna celebrate for a second, maybe move it to the start of the game please devs?) If they are annoying you or you just want to support the wonderful devs, removing ads is only 2$ and is the only paid feature in the game (except coins but those are just for themes and you can earn that yourself). This is the BEST, most comprehensive, most classic, and most new minesweeper experience. Do not waste your time with any other minesweeper iphone copies.

Exceptional Attention to User Experience

The developer(s) of this minesweeper game have obviously spent plenty of time making this the best mobile minesweeper experience they could. There’s even a feature that keeps you from accidentally clicking squares that are on the side of your screen that aren’t on the edge of the minefield. That way, if you’ve zoomed in and happen to align yourself such that it *looks* like you’re at the edge, you can’t try to clear squares that *look* safe from that perspective. You can switch between clearing mode and flagging mode, but holding a square down will do the opposite of the mode you’re in. The random seed of the mines is set *after* your first click and ensures that your first click resides within a bubble. You can customize the minefield size and density, customize the theme, play in portrait or landscape, etc, etc.

Not a True Minesweeper

Over the year or so I've spent playing this app, I've found that any difficulty beyond Medium level will be impossible to win without spending coins to revive. This is due to the fact that, unlike the actual Minesweeper game this is based on, the coding of this app permits equal chances to exist. For example, you can have two uncovered tiles and there will be an equal chance for a mine to exist inside either one, with absolutely zero way for the player to figure out which one it is in. Trust me, I have tried countless times to figure it out. Your only best option when cornered like that is to guess, which will certainly result in a loss each time on anything beyond Medium difficulty. I cannot begin to count how many times I have nearly finished an Extreme or even Hard-level round only to lose to this mechanic. Resulting in wins that don't feel earned, and require payment to win. This means that instead of this being a skill-based game it leans heavily towards being luck-based. If you are looking for a true, authentic Minesweeper experience then I strongly suggest you turn away from this app and search elsewhere. It's far less satisfying having to constantly lose and pay for another life, just to finish a round.

As good as the reviews make it out to be

I was looking for a Minesweeper app that would offer a clean interface, a quick start up, and intuitive controls (eg. responsive flagging/quick-flagging modes), and some kind of display customization, like a dark mode. I downloaded this thinking it might be bloated with unnecessary features but I was so, SO wrong. It has a beautiful UI, extreme customization (found the dark mode variant—one of three—that I preferred), and all kinds of control and layout customizations. The best parts are the daily challenges. They’re so easy to jump into; I’ve gone back almost two year’s worth snagging every gold badge that I can. The no-guess feature is also a godsend. The only points of criticism I can think of are: 1) cracked leaderboards. I can’t rank on them because everyone’s times are 0.00s. 2) themes need the option to enable/disable the color-coding on numerals. Half of the themes have the traditional coloring (eg. blue for 1, green for 2, etc), but the other half feature a single coloring for all numbers. And I get it… the coloring is all an aesthetic, and they’re matched really well for cutesy designs, but there are some themes that I love and simply can’t use because you lose a huge, fundamental ability to scan the board by color. All in, a legitimate 9.5/10.

Should be first app recommended in store

I don’t typically leave reviews, and thought the other reviews were a bit dramatic, but I take it all back. This app is great. It should be the first option in the App Store. It’s super customizable to whatever settings you prefer and has so few ads! Another app I tried had an ad after every single game and no starting blocks, so me constantly picking a bomb as my first choice led to an abrupt ad every 30 seconds. In this version I get an ad after 4 or so games, which makes hopping back into another game much easier. The only issue I have is I don’t understand what the different shortcuts are. I wish there was some text, but it’s really not a big deal and the fact that I can actually enjoy the games completely overrides that.

It’s the best Minesweeper on mobile!

The controls are my favorite thing about this whole port. You can zoom in and place flags very easily, and there’s so much customization! Seriously, it’s so customizable it’s a problem I have with the game. You open the options and scroll down, scroll down, scroll down…. If the menu was a bit more organized it would be a lot easier to get around. Another important thing is the ads are not very intrusive. You’ll only ever get an ad at the end of a game (win or lose), but sometimes you won’t even get an ad, so you likely won’t get an ad for losing a 10 second game. My only minor gripe is that the ads start immediately after you win or lose—like, you won’t even be able to see the game-over/win menu, but they aren’t much of an issue besides that. I would give this app an 8/10. If you want to play Minesweeper on mobile, this is a must-play.
