For fans of old-school roguelikes, Mines of Moria is a masterpiece of mobile adaptation. This isn't a modern 'dumbed-down' RPG; it’s a faithful, touchscreen-first translation of Robert Alan Koeneke’s classic Moria. The depth is incredible—six classes, eight races, and randomized dungeon depths that provide a different experience every single run. It captures that classic 'D&D' feel with attribute gains in strength, intelligence, and more.
What makes this an 'expert' choice is its uncompromising approach to mobile design. No network access, no ads, and no in-game purchases. It’s pure, focused gameplay. The 'smart run' feature is a brilliant addition for mobile, allowing for fast exploration that halts automatically when a threat is detected. It’s a game of entropy and survival where your ultimate goal—slaying the Balrog—is a monumental task. If you want a deep, battery-efficient, offline RPG, this is the gold standard.
Pure offline play with no ads or IAP
Six classes and eight fantasy races
Randomly generated infinite dungeons
Smart-run mechanics for mobile pacing
Begin as a Warrior if you're new to the game for better survivability. Always return to town to barter for better gear and restock on potions before descending into deeper, more dangerous levels.
Every action takes a turn, giving you time to plan your moves. Use 'smart run' for fast exploration, but be prepared to swap to manual control the moment a monster appears. Manage your inventory carefully, as artifacts can break.
Yes, your character is persistently saved on each level transition, and the game features a resume-to-midpoint function.
I love that some variant of moria has made it to my iphone. I played it in a sony clie many years ago and loved it. Shamefully i did "save scum" (overwrite save file for better chest drops). The game mechanics seem good so far. From an old head, lose the color directionals and inputs. Maybe pixelated outline of computer keyboard keys? Putting the ascii back into it as a graphical option is a must @. Also, i wasnt sure where to see my current health. maybe a very small block of pixels somewhere on the screen corner? Please keep it up and Hope to see this game bloom into moria on an iphone device. Thank You!!!!
This was one of the first games I ever played. Was introduced to it on a Vax/Vms system at college in 1986. Never expected to be playing this game again, and certainly not on an Ipad/iphone. What a joy, especially for such a simple interface (imagination powered)! It is as frustrating and heart pounding an adventure as i remember it. Thank you for porting this. Appreciate also the character recovery feature. It’s been a Joy to play.
Before Final Fantasy we had this 😂 I was so overjoyed to see that it was converted to iOS. Pro Tip: Hold the center movement pad space + green button to repeat actions. Carpal tunnel is the real End Boss of this game.
Love this elegant reversioning of an old favorite. The GUI is fantastic and the enhancements to game flow are deft. No rail booze, this. Come on in; the water is fine.
I’ve now lost five straight characters to the same glitch that kills the app, freezing it and causing me to have to delete it, reload, and start over building a new character from scratch. No mote. I’m done.
Equipment randomly disappears after level 25. Just logged on and i am in a dungeon with half my spellboojs and inventory gone. It keeps happening.
As someone who grew up playing Moria, it’s a shame this designer created a SCAM!
Game is trash. Don’t waste a buck on it.
