Progressing through the game unlocks stories based on Greek mythology, including tales of Zeus and Herakles. With multiple game modes and a nationwide competitive system, it caters to both casual beginners and advanced Mahjong masters.

Our Expert Score

86/100

Mahjong Shanghai (Classic) by Sunsoft is the gold standard for tile-matching enthusiasts who value tradition and polish. The game features over 6,000 stages, which is an staggering amount of content that ensures you'll never run out of puzzles. The 3D-rendered tiles are 'sharply-etched,' making them easy to distinguish even on smaller screens, and the mythologically-themed backdrops (featuring Zeus, Hera, and more) add a layer of narrative reward as you progress.

The addition of competitive modes where you can see how you stack up against players nationwide adds a modern edge to this classic game. The interface is remarkably responsive, allowing for quick pairing without the lag often found in lower-budget Mahjong apps. While the removal of some legacy features like the 'Town' mode might disappoint long-time fans, the core gameplay remains flawless. It’s an addictive, meditative experience that perfectly satisfies that 'just one more match' craving.

I can't believe I just paid $5 for this game, it is awful. I have a free version of Mahjong that gives you more boards, types of tiles, etc than this app. I wouldn't recommend this app to anyone, I wish I could get my money back!

Not happy about spending $9.99 on a game that shuts down upon making the first match. The free version works fine. Reported this problem several times and have received no help. Argh!!!
