fixed some minor problems.
Kanazawa Shogi 2 is widely regarded as one of the best Shogi (Japanese Chess) apps available for a reason. The AI is the star here; with 300 different levels of difficulty, it truly scales from 'clueless beginner' to 'professional master.' It doesn't just play well; it feels like it's playing like a human, making occasional understandable mistakes at lower levels.
The UI is very traditional and clean, which helps you focus on the board. The 'Piece Drop' mechanic, which is what separates Shogi from Western Chess, is handled intuitively. It also includes medals and achievements that give you a reason to keep improving. If you want to learn Shogi or sharpen your existing skills, this is the premier choice on iOS.

In Shogi, captured pieces can be placed back on the board as your own. Save your captured 'Gold General' for a decisive drop near the enemy king.
Defeat the AI at various difficulty settings to earn medals. This is the best way to track your improvement over time.
Yes, the lower AI levels are designed specifically for those learning the rules.
I learned Shogi yesterday and the level 1 out of 300 levels is absolutely brutal. I've yet to win! Besides the challenge of this game's A.I, you can replay and email the full text record of all of the moves that were made in chess-like notation to yourself for future analysis. The app also has no annoying music and includes an optional professional Japanese voiceover where each move and type is read aloud. I like the concept of unlocking new Shogi sets as awards for winning medals against the computer, but as the kanji is more difficult for me to identify, I wish the 'animal' Shogi set in the advertised picture was available from the start.
