Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is arguably the best-designed match-3 game on the App Store. Zynga has done an incredible job of weaving the Wizarding World into a genre that often feels generic. Instead of just matching gems, you are casting spells, unlocking cinematic moments from the movies, and collecting magical creatures that provide actual gameplay benefits. The production value is sky-high; the music is the original John Williams score, and the spell animations—like Wingardium Leviosa lifting obstacles—are a treat for any fan.
The game also features a surprisingly deep 'Club' system that encourages social play. Working with your team to win 'Club Challenges' and climb the leagues adds a layer of community that most puzzle games lack. The difficulty is well-tuned; it gets challenging enough to require strategy without forcing you to buy power-ups constantly. Focus on clearing the specific colors required to cast your selected spell. Each time you cast a spell, it gains experience; higher-level spells are more powerful and can clear more tiles at once.
Gameplays
Always equip a creature that complements the level type. For example, some creatures create extra 'Bombs' while others help with 'Chocolate Frog' objectives. Choosing the right pet can make a level significantly easier.

Sat Aug 26 2023 JOHNNYMACK 77I find it being hard to move on from puzzle game to the next. Not without spending a bunch of money to buy gold coins to get you more moves. Then they offer you a summer pass. To purchase then you end up spending more money to move forward with the puzzle. These companies are out to make money nothing is free. When you join a club no one is helping you get through these difficult times if you don’t play every day you will get demoted from your position and when I went to Malaysia (Sabah). WiFi is hard to get unless your in the shopping mall and you ask the retailer of the phone company for the WiFi service they will type it in for you. However then you have to hang around until you are finished playing the game this is time consuming I’m on vacation I don’t want to spend my time in the shopping center it’s about exploring not being tied down to my phone my phone service is T-Mobile. However I spent a bunch of money for international calling and data. If you play the game you will use up most of your data within a week then they will tell you that you used 80% of your data and then they will start to slow it down as it gets closer to your goal. I already spent a bunch of money on this game I don’t want to lose my spot I played another game called mafia war’s for 6-7 years when the game decided to shut it down after gaining 1500 friends to give gifts to get to the level I was at. NOW it’s all gone. Now the company is still in business with different games. I don’t wanna spend a bunch of money and then realize they’re gonna shut the game down. LIFE IN THE BIG CITY.
Pros and Cons
Wed Aug 17 2022 Cooking Game BeyThis game is incredibly fun and addicting. Being a Harry Potter fan, I can’t not play it. But I’m here to point out pros and cons. The pros are the tiers you unlock after achieving a certain goal, the additional boosters that emerge at the start of every puzzle, and the teams you get to join for more lives in case you run out. I also love the boosters provided by the creatures you unlock after collecting all the cards. Now for the downside…. Daily puzzles used to come with a limited time of free play. Now they only award you XP. I loved baking and getting the one hr unlimited lives, too, but I’m not sure if that’s been omitted or if it’s now only on a certain day. The most frustrating part of the game is how the commercials are offered for an additional 3 moves. I’ve noticed when I have a dozen goals left to complete, the commercial appears. But when I have less than 3 goals left to finish, the commercial NEVER shows and it happens every time this way. It’s so frustrating. I won’t be able to complete 12 goals with only 3 moves. Also, when Hagrid provides the lightning sparks that emerge from his umbrella, they seem to land on random spots rather than the target area. Same when I combine the bomb with the winged keys. As opposed to the combo targeting a group of plants, for example, it targets ONE plant in a corner and then taps two plants out of the group. These are just a few examples of what steal the thunder of the game. It wasn’t this frustrating when I first started playing. I won’t quit playing, though, bc it is a fun game.

Sat May 25 2024 JenMegadeathEdit: I had originally given two stars because of changes that were made, but they took feedback and reinstituted watch buttons. The creatures didn’t go back, but the puzzles don’t feel as hard anymore. Really pleased because I do love this game! Original post: For the last several years this was my favorite game on my phone. I worked hard to get my favorite creature to the top level, and have thoroughly enjoyed the different spells that come from moving forward in the game. Progress was always slow and there were plenty of challenging puzzles that took a while to beat, but they were worth it because you also won regularly enough to stay determined. The recent changes to the game have ruined all that. They demoted the creature powers I worked hard to obtain, and it’s so difficult to pass any level on the first attempt now. And since you no longer get gold unless you win, you can be stuck on a puzzle for what feels like forever. They also did away with “watch” buttons that would let you add an extra few moves by watching an ad, and I’ve actually downloaded other games because of those ads. It seems like all these decisions were made to make people frustrated enough that they’ll spend money to advance. It's really disappointing that I might abandon the game soon after a lot of fun the last few years.

More chances to win powerups and coins have become available and I love it!! Some levels are still challenging but the chances of winning them are greater now. Much respect to the developers of this game. Previous review: This game has changed significantly since I’ve started playing. It used to be fun but the Legends puzzles are ridiculously frustrating. It’s like you can’t breathe. Commercial ads that are meant to give you additional moves only show up when you don’t even have a chance of winning. The game recommends ages 4+. How is a 4 yr old supposed to achieve a level like the ones designed for Legends?!?! Really? I miss the old version of the game. I used to win coins and XP. I loved the boosters that emerge at the beginning of each puzzle and the boosters from the creatures. I also miss the daily unlimited lives you get when you first open the game. But a lot has changed. The regular puzzles are awesome but the Legends puzzles are too complicated for no reason. The puzzles for the Professors used to offer 4 chances; now it cut down to 3. How generous… I LOVE playing regular puzzles but until more of those come around, I just won’t play bc Legends is really annoying. I love Harry Potter, and sadly this game isn’t doing it justice anymore.
Biggest issue in my opinion
Tue Jun 27 2023 Residentevil_98So I love this game but my only issue is the fact that for the Clubs/Clans in the game if players aren’t active they just sit there. For example my club leader hasn’t been active for over a year and neither has the Officer, I feel like if players haven’t been online after a certain amount of time they should be booted from the club or at least have the leadership removed and passed on to someone else so that person can kick them out and make room for people who actually want to play the game and progress as a team Update so I play this game with my mom I have for the past 2-3 years we love the game but our biggest issue is still the clubs 29/30 people in our club and half of the including the leader and officer of our club have been inactive for such a long time we stand zero chance of progressing because of this. I have a hard time believing we are the only clan to have this problem. Sure the easiest path would be to ditch the club and move on but again I have a hard time believing we are the only people. My clan has at most 6 active players if that 6!!!! 29 people in my clan and only 6 of us are playing we can’t boot anyone to make space for more players we can’t do anything and honestly it’s kind of crappy. Highly doubt I’ll get any sort of reply to this though I didn’t last time 🤷♀️
Love the game but going broke playing it
Thu Sep 16 2021 Judy HartleyFirst I have to say I absolutely love this game! It’s challenging and creative and the graphics are phenomenal. But here comes the sad reality of this game and why I finally had to review it and only give 3 stars…lately all I do is shell out A LOT of money to play with nothing in return. There are no more magical creatures yet I still earn stars for them. Give me coin instead. Stop being so greedy! You can barley play multiple games without having to shell out money to finish every single time. Maybe I finish one in every 20 without having to pay to finish. And it gets frustrating because at my level I shouldn’t have to be doing that. It’s also shady when you have spent a lot of coin to try and finish a game yet that one lightning bolt or color gem you need to win is suddenly moved out of place. Its becoming less and less “fun” and more like a bad habit I need an intervention for. But the pranks are the absolute worst! I can’t stand them. Please please please don’t bring them back. Ever! I’d love to give you more stars and I feel 3 is being generous and that’s is because it is a great game. And I understand the monetary aspect of these, I don’t have my head in the sand about that. At all! But when you have to spend over $50 to finish a game or 2 EVERY DAY that’s taking it to far. As with most of Zynga’s games I’ve played I’m finding greed is eventually outweighing the fun and I have to stop playing them all together.
The “New” Spell powers Do Not Work
Sat Jul 31 2021 Mook-DarbyHi, first I’ll say that I love this game. Although there is such little information on how to play it… that has been frustrating. I was finally showed a Zynga support site, for the game by contacting Zynga, in game. I had NO IDEA HOW TO GET Creatures. I probably Wasted 90 Albums… which equals 9 new Creature cards. Anyway… search for a website with Zynga support Harry Potter. Most of your questions will be there. And yes, there are So Many Times when you are 1 move away from winning a level… they just want you to pay. But I just keep chugging & eventually get past it. BUT THIS IS MY GRIPE RIGHT NOW… They updated the game maybe 2 weeks ago & announced that the Power-ups are better (more damage). First of all, the spell that removes one gem (so you can match-up a spell and a bag), is ruined. You cannot do that anymore - so really, what is the point in that spell. Zynga, you will see that No One will buy it any longer. And the “power” of the other spells have not been made Better (as you have written)… it is worse. A bag & a bomb = hardly anything. The only power rise from the update has been with your Creature Power & clearing more with those. As other players have stated, why mess with a good thing. But all in all, I love this game. And the new club adventure puzzles are very cool. One suggestion with that though… a way to get more lives & more coins. 5 tries per day, is a bit ridiculous. Thanks for your hard work though. It’s very much appreciated!!

Mon Mar 30 2026 MofustitchI’ve been playing this since it first released and for as long as I can remember I have always gotten ads for extra moves up to a certain point in the day. Once I used the ads a certain amount of times it would no longer appear until it refreshed the next day. Recently I made a small in game purchase and since then the ads for extra moves have disappeared. I tried going to support and they just gave me a bs excuse that certain people get it for certain reasons but it’s pretty clear that it’s because I finally made an in game purchase. I brought this up, but again they just avoid it and say “your feedback is extremely valuable” and that’s it. It’s quite frustrating no longer having the ads because if I want to keep a streak going for certain events and all I need is one or two extra moves, I don’t want to spend gold/powers up just to do it. It seems like they take away the ads once you’ve made a purchase because they want you to continue to make purchases and therefore keep spending money. If I had known this would happen and start making the game more difficult to play and the qol of the game much worse prior to making the purchase, I never would have made the purchase in the first place. I am very disappointed with this game and it’s a terrible model to force players to either spend more money or have a harder time to play. If you look online and even in other reviews here you’ll see that others have ran into the same issue and you can see the BS responses in return.
