Where did gorillas come from? What are gorillas? Where are gorillas going? Find out in Goritaire, a unique single-player card game from ARC SYSTEM WORKS. Your goal is to fill the jungle by aligning seven or more gorillas on the ground. However, you must manage your resources carefully; every gorilla needs food, and if even one is left without bananas, your troop will collapse. It's a strategic, minimalist card experience unlike any other.

81/100

Goritaire is a weird, wonderful, and slightly stressful card game. Arc System Works has a knack for taking simple concepts and giving them a bizarre, high-concept twist (much like they did with Shephy). The gameplay loop is tight: you want more gorillas, but more gorillas mean more mouths to feed.

The art style is delightfully weird, and the existential questions about where gorillas come from set a tone that is equal parts funny and unsettling. It’s a very difficult game to master, which makes the eventual victory of getting seven gorillas to the ground feel like a massive achievement. If you like 'weird' indie card games, this is an absolute gem.

I have the free version of the game. It’s a cool deck-builder and well-designed, with a very fun and retro UI. The card designs are wonderful and I found myself showing my favorites to people. The UI elements are a little slow to move; the selector for actions was a little bit unintuitive but I figured it out pretty quickly. I find the full game to be a little bit pricey; I think $2.00US would be more reasonable. If you’ve played wingspan, this has some similar aspects. I really enjoy it and would love to see a physical version for sale.

This game is surprisingly in-depth, but I am curious why the frame rate isn’t a bit higher.
